    Categorical Change: Exploring the Effects of Concept Drift in Human Perceptual Category Learning

    Categorization is an essential survival skill that we engage in daily. A multitude of behavioral and neuropsychological evidence support the existence of multiple learning systems involved in category learning. COmpetition between Verbal and Implicit Systems (COVIS) theory provides a neuropsychological basis for the existence of an explicit and implicit learning system involved in the learning of category rules. COVIS provides a convincing account of asymptotic performance in human category learning. However, COVIS – and virtually all current theories of category learning – focus solely on categories and decision environments that remain stationary over time. However, our environment is dynamic, and we often need to adapt our decision making to account for environmental or categorical changes. Machine learning addresses this significant challenge through what is termed concept drift. Concept drift occurs any time a data distribution changes over time. This dissertation draws from two key characteristics of concept drift in machine learning known to impact the performance of learning models, and in-so-doing provides the first systematic exploration of concept drift (i.e., categorical change) in human perceptual category learning. Four experiments, each including one key change parameter (category base-rates, payoffs, or category structure [RB/II]), investigated the effect of rate of change (abrupt, gradual) and awareness of change (foretold or not) on decision criterion adaptation. Critically, Experiments 3 and 4 evaluated differences in categorical adaptation within explicit and implicit category learning tasks to determine if rate and awareness of change moderated any learning system differences. The results of these experiments inform current category learning theory and provide information for machine learning models of decision support in non-stationary environments

    The Implicit Learning of Base-rates: Evidence from Working Memory Disruption

    Base-rates, or relative prevalence in the environment, play an important role in many diagnostic and categorical decisions. For example, in order for a doctor to make an appropriate diagnosis or treatment plan, he/she must be sensitive to the underlying base-rates. Early base-rate research seemed to show that people were insensitive to base-rates and poor at incorporating them into their judgments (e.g., Kahneman & Tverksy, 1973). However, more recent research has shown that people are sensitive to base-rates when they are learned through direct experience rather than presented in summary form (e.g., Bohil & Maddox, 2001; Estes, 1989). Using a category learning approach, the current study sought an explanation for experience-based sensitivity to base-rates through the lens of COVIS theory – a prominent multiple-systems approach to category learning. COVIS postulates that there are separate implicit and explicit systems involved in category learning. Implicit (nonverbalizable) learning is aided by the dopamine release involved in a motor response with immediate feedback while explicit learning relies heavily on working memory for hypothesis testing and verbalizable rule generation. A recent study found that disrupting the implicit learning system during categorization with unequal base-rates led to a weaker influence of base-rates on decision criterion (signal detection b) placement (Bohil & Wismer, 2014). The current study attempted to corroborate these findings by investigating whether the addition of a verbal working memory task immediately after category feedback (disrupting explicit reasoning about category feedback) would affect the influence of base-rates on categorization. In this study, 123 participants completed one of four conditions (observational/response training x short/long feedback processing time). Participants first learned two simple perceptual categories with equal base-rates. After achieving a pre-determined accuracy criterion, participants moved on to the experimental phase with unequal base-rates (3:1) and the inclusion of a verbal working memory task presented either immediately after receiving category feedback (500ms) or after a delay (2500ms). The experimental phase consisted of alternating training blocks (with feedback) and test blocks (without feedback). Half the participants learned observationally during training phases (known to disrupt implicit learning) while half made a classification response during training trials (which supports implicit learning). As predicted, we found that disrupting working memory had no effect on the influence of base-rates on categorization when implicit learning was possible (in terms of decision criterion values determined by signal detection and decision-bound modeling results). Our results support the multiple-systems theory which predicts that disrupting working memory should not affect base-rate sensitivity if sensitivity to base-rates is indeed mediated by the implicit learning system. These findings have implications for devising appropriate training methods for diagnosticians in various fields

    Macroalgae removal on coral reefs: realised ecosystem functions transcend biogeographic locations

    Coral reef ecosystems are at the forefront of biodiversity loss and climate change-mediated transformations. This is expected to have profound consequences for the functioning of these ecosystems. However, assessments of ecosystem function on reefs are often spatially limited, within biogeographic realms, or rely on presumed proxies such as traits. To address these shortcomings and assess the effects of biogeography and fish presence on the critical ecosystem function of macroalgal removal, we used assays of six algal genera across three reef habitats in two biogeographically distinct locations: Little Cayman in the Caribbean and Lizard Island on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Patterns of fish feeding and realised ecosystem function were strikingly similar between the two geographic locations, despite a threefold difference in the local diversity of nominally herbivorous fishes, a 2.4-fold difference in the diversity of fishes feeding and differences in the biogeographic history of the two locations. In both regions, a single species dominated the function: a surgeonfish, Naso unicornis, at the GBR location and, surprisingly, a triggerfish, Melichthys niger, at the Caribbean location. Both species, especially M. niger, were relatively rare, compared to other nominally herbivorous fishes, in censuses covering more than 14,000 m(2) at each location. Our study provides novel insights into the critical function of macroalgal removal in hyperdiverse coral reef ecosystems, highlighting: (a) that function can transcend biogeographic, taxonomic and historical constraints; and (b) shortcomings in our assumptions regarding fish presence and realised ecosystem function on coral reefs

    Access and barriers to postsecondary education: evidence from the youth in transition survey

    Open accessWe exploit the Youth in Transition Survey, Cohort A, to investigate access and barriers to postsecondary education (PSE). We first look at how access to PSE by age 21 is related to family characteristics, including family income and parental education. We find that the effects of the latter significantly dominate those of the former. Among the 25% of all youths who do not access PSE, 23% of this group state that they had no PSE aspirations and 43% report no barriers. Only 22% of the 25% who do not access PSE (or 5.5% of all youths in our sample) claim that “finances” constitute a barrier. Further analysis suggests that affordability per se is an issue in only a minority of those cases where finances are cited, suggesting that the real problem for the majority of those reporting financial barriers may be that they do not perceive PSE to be of sufficient value to be worth pursuing: “it costs too much” may mean “it is not worth it” rather than “I cannot afford to go.” Our general conclusion is that cultural factors are the principal determinants of PSE participation.     Polyurethane scaffold with in situ swelling capacity for nucleus pulposus replacement

    Nucleus pulposus (NP) replacement offers a minimally invasive alternative to spinal fusion or total disc replacement for the treatment of intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration. This study aimed to develop a cytocompatible {NP} replacement material, which is feasible for non-invasive delivery and tunable design, and allows immediate mechanical restoration of the IVD. A bi-phasic polyurethane scaffold was fabricated consisting of a core material with rapid swelling property and a flexible electrospun envelope. The scaffold was assessed in a bovine whole {IVD} organ culture model under dynamic load for 14 days. Nucleotomy was achieved by incision through the endplate without damaging the annulus fibrosus. After implantation of the scaffold and in situ swelling, the dynamic compressive stiffness and disc height were restored immediately. The scaffold also showed favorable cytocompatibility for native disc cells. Implantation of the scaffold in a partially nucleotomized {IVD} down-regulated catabolic gene expression, increased proteoglycan and type {II} collagen intensity and decreased type I collagen intensity in remaining {NP} tissue, indicating potential to retard degeneration and preserve the {IVD} cell phenotype. The scaffold can be delivered in a minimally invasive manner, and the geometry of the scaffold post-hydration is tunable by adjusting the core material, which allows individualized design.     The Role of Turtles as Coral Reef Macroherbivores

    Herbivory is widely accepted as a vital function on coral reefs. To date, the majority of studies examining herbivory in coral reef environments have focused on the roles of fishes and/or urchins, with relatively few studies considering the potential role of macroherbivores in reef processes. Here, we introduce evidence that highlights the potential role of marine turtles as herbivores on coral reefs. While conducting experimental habitat manipulations to assess the roles of herbivorous reef fishes we observed green turtles (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) showing responses that were remarkably similar to those of herbivorous fishes. Reducing the sediment load of the epilithic algal matrix on a coral reef resulted in a forty-fold increase in grazing by green turtles. Hawksbill turtles were also observed to browse transplanted thalli of the macroalga Sargassum swartzii in a coral reef environment. These responses not only show strong parallels to herbivorous reef fishes, but also highlight that marine turtles actively, and intentionally, remove algae from coral reefs. When considering the size and potential historical abundance of marine turtles we suggest that these potentially valuable herbivores may have been lost from many coral reefs before their true importance was understood

Decision criterion values were significantly larger following response training, suggesting that implicit learning underlies base-rate sensitivity. Disrupting explicit processing had no effect on base-rate learning as long as implicit learning was supported. These results suggest base-rate sensitivity develops from experience primarily through implicit learning, consistent with separate learning systems accounts of categorization

    We explored the possibility, suggested by Koehler (Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 19, 1-53, 1996; also Spellman Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 19, 38, 1996), that implicit learning mediates the influence of base-rates on category knowledge acquired through direct experience. In two experiments, participants learned simple perceptual categories with unequal base-rates (i.e., presentation frequency). In Experiment 1, participants received either response training or observational training. In Experiment 2, participants received response training with either immediate or delayed feedback. In previous studies, observational training and delayed feedback training have been shown to disrupt implicit learning. We found that base-rate influence was weaker in these conditions when category discriminability was low (i.e., when category membership was difficult to determine). This conclusion was based on signal detection β values as well as decision-bound modeling results. Because these disruptions to implicit learning attenuate the base-rate effect, we conclude that implicit learning does indeed underlie the influence of base-rates learned through direct experience. This suggests that the implicit learning system postulated by the COVIS theory of categorization (Ashby, Alfonso-Reese, Turken, & Waldron Psychological Review, 105, 442-481, 1998) may be involved in developing sensitivity to category base-rates

    Cross-shelf benthic community structure on the Great Barrier Reef: relationships between macroalgal cover and herbivore biomass

    The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is one of the most extensively studied coral reef systems in the world, yet to date, there has been no comprehensive multi-spatial scale evaluation of its benthic community structure. Such descriptions provide a useful reference point for evaluating future community changes. Moreover, large-scale associations between macroalgae and herbivory on the GBR are yet to be investigated. Our aim, therefore, was to quantify all major substratum categories across multiple spatial scales and investigate cross-shelf relationships between macroalgal cover and herbivore biomass. Using point-intercept transects and timed underwater censuses, individual benthic\ud components and roving herbivorous fish densities were quantified across 3 spatial scales: latitude, continental shelf position and within-reef habitat. Principal component analysis and analysis of similarities (ANOSIM) revealed a distinct separation of inner-shelf reef habitats from all mid- and outer-shelf habitats in both northern and central regions of the GBR. Macroalgal cover was generally high on inner-shelf reefs (36 to 66%) and decreased markedly on all mid- and outer-shelf habitats (0 to 15%). A significant negative correlation was found between macroalgal cover and total herbivorous fish biomass, but no relationship was found between macroalgal cover and macroalgal browser\ud biomass. In contrast to macroalgae, the cover of crustose coralline algae and live scleractinian corals increased markedly across the shelf in both regions of the GBR. These patterns appear to be shaped by both physical and biological factors, including wave energy, sedimentation and grazing intensity
