Statistical Properties of Interacting Bose Gases in Quasi-2D Harmonic Traps
The analytical probability distribution of the quasi-2D (and purely 2D) ideal
and interacting Bose gas are investigated by using a canonical ensemble
approach. Using the analytical probability distribution of the condensate, the
statistical properties such as the mean occupation number and particle number
fluctuations of the condensate are calculated. Researches show that there is a
continuous crossover of the statistical properties from a quasi-2D to a purely
2D ideal or interacting gases. Different from the case of a 3D Bose gas, the
interaction between atoms changes in a deep way the nature of the particle
number fluctuations.Comment: RevTex, 10pages, 4 figures, E-mail: [email protected]
Carcinogenicity of hexavalent chromium
Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), a commonly used industrial metal, is a well known human lung carcinogen. Epidemiology and animal studies suggest that the particulate Cr(VI) compounds, specifically the water insoluble compounds, are the more potent carcinogens, however, the carcinogenic mechanism remains unknown. Here we summarize recent Cr(VI)-induced human tumour, in vivo, cell culture and in vitro studies and put the data into context with three major paradigms of carcinogenesis: multistage carcinogenesis, genomic instability, and epigenetic modifications. Based on these studies, we propose a mechanism for chromate carcinogenesis that is primarily driven by the genomic instability paradigm
Trispectrum versus Bispectrum in Single-Field Inflation
In the standard slow-roll inflationary cosmology, quantum fluctuations in a
single field, the inflaton, generate approximately Gaussian primordial density
perturbations. At present, the bispectrum and trispectrum of the density
perturbations have not been observed and the probability distribution for these
perturbations is consistent with Gaussianity. However, Planck satellite data
will bring a new level of precision to bear on this issue, and it is possible
that evidence for non-Gaussian effects in the primordial distribution will be
discovered. One possibility is that a trispectrum will be observed without
evidence for a non-zero bispectrum. It is not difficult for this to occur in
inflationary models where quantum fluctuations in a field other than the
inflaton contribute to the density perturbations. A natural question to ask is
whether such an observation would rule out the standard scenarios. We explore
this issue and find that it is possible to construct single-field models in
which inflaton-generated primordial density perturbations have an observable
trispectrum, but a bispectrum that is too small to be observed by the Planck
satellite. However, an awkward fine tuning seems to be unavoidable.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures; journal versio
The empirical accuracy of uncertain inference models
Uncertainty is a pervasive feature of the domains in which expert systems are designed to function. Research design to test uncertain inference methods for accuracy and robustness, in accordance with standard engineering practice is reviewed. Several studies were conducted to assess how well various methods perform on problems constructed so that correct answers are known, and to find out what underlying features of a problem cause strong or weak performance. For each method studied, situations were identified in which performance deteriorates dramatically. Over a broad range of problems, some well known methods do only about as well as a simple linear regression model, and often much worse than a simple independence probability model. The results indicate that some commercially available expert system shells should be used with caution, because the uncertain inference models that they implement can yield rather inaccurate results
A Compelling Creation: A Suggestion for a New Apologetic
From our experience with quantum mechanics, chaos theory, and the ingenuity of the carnal mind, we know that it is not possible, by logical argument alone -- either from first principles or from observations of the natural world -- to arrive at the conclusion that the God of the Bible created the world. Solely logical arguments lead a person at best to a conclusion of the mind -- not the heart. Our apologetic should involve compelling arguments which remind a person what they already know in their heart (Rom. 1 :20). A few compelling arguments from the creation are reviewed. Firstly, reinforced with the observation that the universe has low entropy as well as observations from chaos theory, the specified complexity found in observations which make up the anthropic principle provide compelling evidence that the universe -- from its basic lawlike underpinnings to the details of the earth\u27s atmosphere -- has been fashioned for man by a transcendent, omniscient, omnipotent designer Secondly, the language structure of DNA as well as the specified complexity, low entropy, and chaotic nature of biological systems argue compellingly that life was fashioned by an omniscient, omnipotent, communicating designer external to biological systems. Thirdly, thermodynamic and general relativity theories combined with observational data on galactic regression suggest that the universe had a beginning. From our experience with causality, there is compelling reason to believe that the universe began as the result of a conscious decision of a personal, immanent, transcendent, immaterial, changeless, eternal, omniscient, omnipotent being. These observations provide compelling argument not just for a god, but for the Creator God of Scripture
Compensation of B-L charge of matter with relic sneutrinos
We consider massless gauge boson connected to B-L charge with and without
compensation to complete the investigation of the gauging of B and L charges.
Relic sneutrinos predicted by SUSY and composite models may compensate B-L
charge of matter. As a consequence of the possible compensation mechanism we
have shown that the available experimental data admit the range of the B-L
interaction constant, 10^{-29} < {\alpha}_{B-L} < 10^{-12}, in addition to
{\alpha}_{B-L} < 10^{-49} obtained without compensation.Comment: 6 page
Modulus Stabilization with Bulk Fields
We propose a mechanism for stabilizing the size of the extra dimension in the
Randall-Sundrum scenario. The potential for the modulus field that sets the
size of the fifth dimension is generated by a bulk scalar with quartic
interactions localized on the two 3-branes. The minimum of this potential
yields a compactification scale that solves the hierarchy problem without fine
tuning of parameters.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX; minor typo correcte
Designing adaptive structures for whole life energy savings
Designing structures with minimal environmental impact is emerging as a seriou concern in the construction sector. Conventional structural design practice involves designing first for strength, followed by secondary checks on deflections and other serviceability limits states. If these limits are exceeded, the con-ventional solution has been to add material to increase stiffness. When the design is governed by unpredicta-ble events such as fluctuating loads, strong wind storms or earthquakes, the structure is effectively overde-signed for most of its working life. This paper presents a methodology to design adaptive structures that minimize the whole life energy consumption. The methodology is illustrated on plane pin-jointed trusses, both determinate and indeterminate. Strategically placing actuators allow the internal flow of forces to be ho-mogenized and displacements to be controlled. The actuators only start working when the loads reach a cer-tain threshold. Below this threshold, the structure resists loads mainly passively thereby limiting significantly the operational energy used. It was found that both indeterminate and determinate topologies bring substantial energy savings up to 70% of the total energy
A new chiral electro-optic effect: Sum-frequency generation from optically active liquids in the presence of a dc electric field
We report the observation of sum-frequency signals that depend linearly on an
applied electrostatic field and that change sign with the handedness of an
optically active solution. This recently predicted chiral electro-optic effect
exists in the electric-dipole approximation. The static electric field gives
rise to an electric-field-induced sum-frequency signal (an achiral third-order
process) that interferes with the chirality-specific sum-frequency at
second-order. The cross-terms linear in the electrostatic field constitute the
effect and may be used to determine the absolute sign of second- and
third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities in isotropic media.Comment: Submitted to Physical Revie
Spontaneously generated X-shaped light bullets
We observe the formation of an intense optical wavepacket fully localized in
all dimensions, i.e. both longitudinally (in time) and in the transverse plane,
with an extension of a few tens of fsec and microns, respectively. Our
measurements show that the self-trapped wave is a X-shaped light bullet
spontaneously generated from a standard laser wavepacket via the nonlinear
material response (i.e., second-harmonic generation), which extend the soliton
concept to a new realm, where the main hump coexists with conical tails which
reflect the symmetry of linear dispersion relationship.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted for publicatio
