    Ecological Observations on Predatory Coccinellidae (Coleoptera) in Southwestern Michigan

    Ecological observations on habitat utilization by thirteen species of predatory Coccinellidae were made at a southern Michigan site during 1989 and 1990. Most of species were common during both years and used both agricul- tural and uncultivated habitats. Coccinella septempunctata and Coleomegilla maculata, were the most abundant in agricultural crops (alfalfa, maize, soy- bean and triticale), whereas Adalia bipunctata and Cycloneda munda, were the most abundant in deciduous and bushy habitats

    Tests were performed to characterize certain parameters of the EVA Pacer and to provide baseline data that can be used for the comparison of improved batteries that may be incorporated into the vehicle at a later time. The vehicle tests were concentrated on the electrical drive subsystem; i.e., the batteries, controller and motor. The tests included coastdowns to characterize the road load, and range evaluations for both cyclic and constant speed conditions. A qualitative evaluation of the vehicle's performance was made by comparing its constant speed range performance with other electric and hybrid vehicles. The Pacer performance was approximately equal to the majority of those vehicles assessed in 1977

    Interaction-induced chiral p_x \pm i p_y superfluid order of bosons in an optical lattice

    The study of superconductivity with unconventional order is complicated in condensed matter systems by their extensive complexity. Optical lattices with their exceptional precision and control allow one to emulate superfluidity avoiding many of the complications of condensed matter. A promising approach to realize unconventional superfluid order is to employ orbital degrees of freedom in higher Bloch bands. In recent work, indications were found that bosons condensed in the second band of an optical chequerboard lattice might exhibit p_x \pm i p_y order. Here we present experiments, which provide strong evidence for the emergence of p_x \pm i p_y order driven by the interaction in the local p-orbitals. We compare our observations with a multi-band Hubbard model and find excellent quantitative agreement

The theory is developed for general homogeneous anisotropic media under non-degeneracy conditions.     Ab Initio Treatment of Collective Correlations and the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay of 48^{48}Ca

    Working with Hamiltonians from chiral effective field theory, we develop a novel framework for describing arbitrary deformed medium-mass nuclei by combining the in-medium similarity renormalization group with the generator coordinate method. The approach leverages the ability of the first method to capture dynamic correlations and the second to include collective correlations without violating symmetries. We use our scheme to compute the matrix element that governs the neutrinoless double beta decay of 48^{48}Ca to 48^{48}Ti, and find it to have the value 0.610.61, near or below the predictions of most phenomenological methods. The result opens the door to ab initio calculations of the matrix elements for the decay of heavier nuclei such as 76^{76}Ge, 130^{130}Te, and 136^{136}Xe.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. supplementary material included. version to be publishe

    A new concept of fluidized bed will be shown which can be used for various gas-tosolids reactions (e.g. chemical vapour deposition (CVD) reactions) with high throughput like the production of new materials. For the design and scale-up of the new bubbling fluidized bed with vertically aligned vertical nozzles the fluid dynamics of the fluidized beds have to be determined and analysed, especially the flow around the gas nozzles. A jet region around a single centrally arranged injector lance in a bubbling fluidized bed reactor is characterized by different parameters like solids concentration and jet gas distribution.     Optically thin clouds in the trades

    We develop a new method to describe the total cloud cover including optically thin clouds in trade wind cumulus cloud fields. Climate models and large eddy simulations commonly underestimate the cloud cover, while estimates from observations largely disagree on the cloud cover in the trades. Currently, trade wind clouds significantly contribute to the uncertainty in climate sensitivity estimates derived from model perturbation studies. To simulate clouds well, especially how they change in a future climate, we have to know how cloudy it is.In this study we develop a method to quantify the cloud cover from a cloud-free perspective. Using well-known radiative transfer relations we retrieve the cloud-free contribution in high-resolution satellite observations of trade cumulus cloud fields during EUREC4A. Knowing the cloud-free part, we can investigate the remaining cloud-related contributions consisting of areas detected by common cloud-masking algorithms and undetected areas related to optically thin clouds. We find that the cloud-mask cloud cover underestimates the total cloud cover by 33 %. Aircraft lidar measurements support our findings by showing a high abundance of optically thin clouds during EUREC4A. Mixing the undetected optically thin clouds into the cloud-free signal can cause an underestimation of the cloud radiative effect of up to −7.5 %. We further discuss possible artificial correlations in aerosol–cloud cover interaction studies that might arise from undetected optically thin low clouds. Our analysis suggests that the known underestimation of trade wind cloud cover and simultaneous overestimation of cloud brightness in models are even higher than assumed so far

    Solitonic spin-liquid state due to the violation of the Lifshitz condition in Fe1+y_{1+y}Te

    A combination of phenomenological analysis and M\"ossbauer spectroscopy experiments on the tetragonal Fe1+y_{1+y}Te system indicates that the magnetic ordering transition in compounds with higher Fe-excess, y≥y\ge 0.11, is unconventional. Experimentally, a liquid-like magnetic precursor with quasi-static spin-order is found from significantly broadened M\"ossbauer spectra at temperatures above the antiferromagnetic transition. The incommensurate spin-density wave (SDW) order in Fe1+y_{1+y}Te is described by a magnetic free energy that violates the weak Lifshitz condition in the Landau theory of second-order transitions. The presence of multiple Lifshitz invariants provides the mechanism to create multidimensional, twisted, and modulated solitonic phases.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
