Heavy Hyperon--Antihyperon Production
Based on the experience from the production of anti-Lambda Lambda and
anti-Sigma Sigma pairs at LEAR (experiment PS185) it is suggested to continue
the investigations towards the heavier antihyperon--hyperon pairs anti-Xi Xi
and anti-Omega Omega in view of: (1) the production dynamics of the heavier
antihyperon--hyperon out of the anti-p p annihilation (2) a comparison of the
(3s 3anti-s quark system) anti-Omega Omega to the (3 (anti-s s)) 3 phi meson
production, where both systems have similar masses (3.345 and 3.057,
respectively) and identical valence quark content. A systematic study of the
antihyperon--hyperon production with increasing strangeness content is
interesting for the following reasons: The anti-Omega Omega production is the
creation of two spin 3/2 objects out of the two spin 1/2 anti-p p particles.
Results of the PS185 experiments prove a clear dominance of the spin triplet
anti-s s dissociation. In the Omega anti-Omega the three s-quarks (three anti-s
quarks) are aligned to spin 3/2 each. If the three anti-s s pairs are now all
in spin triplet configurations when created out of the gluonic interaction they
should have spin parity quantum number as 3^- as long as Omega anti-Omega is
created with relative L=0 angular momentum. The comparison of the Omega
anti-Omega baryon pair to the phi phi phi three meson production (where the
three anti-s s quark pairs might not but can be produced without relative
correlation) would provide a unique determination of the intermediate matter
state. Measurements of excitation functions and polarization transfers should
be used to examine these gluon rich anti-p p --> anti-Omega Omega and anti-p p
--> phi phi phi reaction channels. Such experiments should be performed at the
PANDA detector at the FAIR facility of the GSI.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Presented at LEAP05: International Conference on

Large gauge invariant non-standard neutrino interactions
Theories beyond the Standard Model must necessarily respect its gauge
symmetry. This implies strict constraints on the possible models of
non-standard neutrino interactions, which we analyze. The focus is set on the
effective low-energy dimension six and eight operators involving four leptons,
decomposing them according to all possible tree-level mediators, as a guide for
model building. The new couplings are required to have sizeable strength, while
processes involving four charged leptons are required to be suppressed. For
non-standard interactions in matter, only diagonal tau-neutrino interactions
can escape these requirements and can be allowed to result from dimension six
operators. Large non-standard neutrino interactions from dimension eight
operators alone are phenomenologically allowed in all flavour channels and
shown to require at least two new mediator particles. The new couplings must
obey general cancellation conditions both at the dimension six and eight
levels, which result from expressing the operators obtained from the mediator
analysis in terms of a complete basis of operators. We illustrate with one
example how to apply this information to model building.Comment: 34 pages, 4 figures, 5 tables. Final version in PR
On the fidelity of two pure states
The fidelity of two pure states (also known as transition probability) is a
symmetric function of two operators, and well-founded operationally as an event
probability in a certain preparation-test pair. Motivated by the idea that the
fidelity is the continuous quantum extension of the combinatorial equality
function, we enquire whether there exists a symmetric operational way of
obtaining the fidelity. It is shown that this is impossible. Finally, we
discuss the optimal universal approximation by a quantum operation.Comment: LaTeX2e, 8 pages, submitted to J. Phys. A: Math. and Ge
Operational interpretations of quantum discord
Quantum discord quantifies non-classical correlations going beyond the
standard classification of quantum states into entangled and unentangled ones.
Although it has received considerable attention, it still lacks any precise
interpretation in terms of some protocol in which quantum features are
relevant. Here we give quantum discord its first operational meaning in terms
of entanglement consumption in an extended quantum state merging protocol. We
further relate the asymmetry of quantum discord with the performance imbalance
in quantum state merging and dense coding.Comment: v4: 5 pages, 1 fig. Refs added, text improved. Main results

Development of ultrasonic methods for hemodynamic measurements
A transcutanous method to measure instantaneous mean blood flow in peripheral arteries of the human body was defined. Transcutanous and implanted cuff ultrasound velocity measurements were evaluated, and the accuracies of velocity, flow, and diameter measurements were assessed for steady flow. Performance criteria were established for the pulsed Doppler velocity meter (PUDVM), and performance tests were conducted. Several improvements are suggested
Analytical model of brittle destruction based on hypothesis of scale similarity
The size distribution of dust particles in nuclear fusion devices is close to
the power function. A function of this kind can be the result of brittle
destruction. From the similarity assumption it follows that the size
distribution obeys the power law with the exponent between -4 and -1. The model
of destruction has much in common with the fractal theory. The power exponent
can be expressed in terms of the fractal dimension. Reasonable assumptions on
the shape of fragments concretize the power exponent, and vice versa possible
destruction laws can be inferred on the basis of measured size distributions.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
