    Higher Education as the Door to a Wider World: Oakland High School Leadership Seminar 2013

    The goal of this service-learning project was to identify high school students who may not think they have the opportunity for a higher education. The theme was higher education as the door to a wider world. Messages shared gave these young adults skills to increase their self-confidence and become better leaders at school and at home. Speakers were carefully selected as those who have experienced life’s hardships while following their dreams. Speakers gave hope to the Lafayette, Indiana Oakland High School Government class that anything is possible. Oakland students are starving for the tools that will make their life’s journey smoother, and it is our intent to help them through service-learning projects. In spring 2014, service-learning events were expanded to include Jefferson High School (also in Lafayette, Indiana) with the goal of adding two additional high schools in the near future. Through service-learning, we are looking for brilliant leaders in unexpected places, and, in return, we are getting unexpected returns. How does someone stay inspired to teach young adults? Look into the eyes of these students after one of our seminars and you will find the answer

    Security Patch Management - An Overview of the Patching Process and its Challenges in Norwegian Businesses

    Cyber-attacks are growing more frequent and sophisticated, and they are impacting businesses of all sizes. This encourages businesses to utilize safe, flaw-free systems, making them less susceptible to cyber-attacks. The issue is that no system is flawless, and a substantial number of security flaws are discovered regularly. To ensure the system's security, patches are distributed and implemented. Patches can be complicated and implementing them in systems can be difficult. This thesis seeks to identify the challenges that make the patching process challenging and to propose potential solutions. This thesis was conducted utilizing a qualitative research strategy and methods such as a systematic literature review, to identify existing patching challenges identified by previous research. We conducted interviews with business professionals who were familiar with the patching procedure and had understanding of cybersecurity. The majority of our interviewees were managers with additional expertise leading patching teams. Prior study indicated various challenges in the field of patching and urged further investigation into the issue of patching. Our findings correlated with the current challenges identified by prior research, and we uncovered important new challenges, such as the fact that patches for major vulnerabilities have a tendency to be released just before a holiday, and that legacy systems are notoriously difficult to patch and are sometimes not patched at all. The significance of planning, organization, and communication in the patching process posed additional challenges. The contribution of this thesis to the patching topic is that we have identified "Planned patch delay" as a patch policy that contributes to a high security posture, provides time for patch planning, and mitigates a number of the challenges that might arise during the patching process.     A Two-test Protocol for the Precise Determination of the Maximal Lactate Steady State

    International Journal of Exercise Science 11(4): 681-695, 2018. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of a two-test method for precisely identifying the Maximal Lactate Steady State (MLSS). Eight male competitive cyclists performed two bouts on a cycle ergometer. Following a maximal oxygen consumption (O2max) test (66.91 ± 5.29 mL∙kg-1∙min-1) we identified the lactate deflection point using the visual deflection (TVis), Log-Log (TLog), Dmax (TDmax), RER = 1.00 (TRER), ventilatory threshold (TVent), and the 1.0 mmol·L-1 increase above baseline (T+1) methods. The second incremental test (SIT) consisted of 6-7 stages (5 min each) starting 20-30 W below to 20-30 W above the predetermined deflection point, in 10 W increments. Comparison of the two tests yielded different threshold estimates (range 11-46W) for all methods (P = 0.001-0.019) except the TLog (P = 0.194) and TRER (P = 0.100). The SIT resulted in significantly (P = 0.007) more narrow range of thresholds (27.5 ± 11.01W) compared to the O2max test (70 ± 42.51W). The TVis from the SIT was identified as the MLSS and was verified using three 45-minute steady-state exercise bouts at 95%, 100%, and 105% of MLSS intensity (average increment 12.8 W). Blood lactate and O2 were recorded every 5 minutes and differed between the three intensities at every time point (P \u3c 0.001). O2 increased from the 5th to the 45th minute by 7.02 mL∙kg-1∙min-1 (100% MLSS), 3.63 mL∙kg-1∙min-1 (95% MLSS) and 7.5 mL∙kg-1∙min-1 (105% MLSS, to the 30th minute). These results indicate that the MLSS was identified correctly by the SIT, the single incremental test overestimated the MLSS intensity, and the TVis provides a very accurate determination of the lactate breakpoint. The use of a second submaximal test is required for a precise identification of MLSS

    Factors that influence perforator thrombosis and predict healing with perforator sclerotherapy for venous ulceration without axial reflux

    ObjectiveRefluxing perforators contribute to venous ulceration. We sought to describe patient characteristics and procedural factors that (1) impact rates of incompetent perforator vein (IPV) thrombosis with ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy (UGS) and (2) impact the healing of venous ulcers (CEAP 6) without axial reflux.MethodsA retrospective review of UGS of IPV injections from January 2010 to November 2012 identified 73 treated venous ulcers in 62 patients. Patients had no other superficial or axial reflux and were treated with standard wound care and compression. Ultrasound imaging was used to screen for refluxing perforators near ulcer(s). These were injected with sodium tetradecyl sulfate or polidocanol foam and assessed for thrombosis at 2 weeks. Demographic data, comorbidities, treatment details, and outcomes were analyzed. Univariate and multivariable modeling was performed to determine covariates predicting IPV thrombosis and ulcer healing.ResultsThere were 62 patients (55% male; average age, 57.1 years) with active ulcers for an average of 28 months with compression therapy before perforator treatment, and 36% had a history of deep venous thrombosis and 30% had deep venous reflux. At a mean follow-up of 30.2 months, ulcers healed in 32 patients (52%) and did not heal in 30 patients (48%). Ulcers were treated with 189 injections, with an average thrombosis rate of 54%. Of 73 ulcers, 43 ulcers (59%) healed, and 30 (41%) did not heal. The IPV thrombosis rate was 69% in patients whose ulcers healed vs 38% in patients whose ulcers did not heal (P < .001). Multivariate models demonstrated male gender (P = .03) and warfarin use (P = .01) negatively predicted thrombosis of IPVs. A multivariate model for ulcer healing found complete IPV thrombosis was a positive predictor (P = .02), whereas a large initial ulcer area was a negative predictor (P = .08). Increased age was associated with fewer ulcer recurrences (P = .05). Predictors of increased ulcer recurrences were hypertension (P = .04) and increased follow-up time (P = .02). Calf vein thrombosis occurred after 3% (six of 189) of injections.ConclusionsThrombosis of IPVs with UGS increases venous ulcer healing in a difficult patient population. Complete closure of all IPVs in an ulcerated limb was the only predictor of ulcer healing. Men and patients taking warfarin have decreased rates of IPV thrombosis with UGS

    Genomic approaches to understanding population divergence and speciation in birds

The widespread application of high-throughput sequencing in studying evolutionary processes and patterns of diversification has led to many important discoveries. However, the barriers to utilizing these technologies and interpreting the resulting data can be daunting for first-time users. We provide an overview and a brief primer of relevant methods (e.g., whole-genome sequencing, reduced-representation sequencing, sequence-capture methods, and RNA sequencing), as well as important steps in the analysis pipelines (e.g., loci clustering, variant calling, whole-genome and transcriptome assembly). We also review a number of applications in which researchers have used these technologies to address questions related to avian systems. We highlight how genomic tools are advancing research by discussing their contributions to 3 important facets of avian evolutionary history. We focus on (1) general inferences about biogeography and biogeographic history, (2) patterns of gene flow and isolation upon secondary contact and hybridization, and (3) quantifying levels of genomic divergence between closely related taxa. We find that in many cases, high-throughput sequencing data confirms previous work from traditional molecular markers, although there are examples in which genome-wide genetic markers provide a different biological interpretation. We also discuss how these new data allow researchers to address entirely novel questions, and conclude by outlining a number of intellectual and methodological challenges as the genomics era moves forward

    Beta decays of mass A = 142 isobaric chain starting from 142Cs have been investigated by means of Modular Total Absorption Spectrometer (MTAS) and on-line mass separation at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The beta strength distribution derived for 142Cs decay from MTAS spectra is showing significant differences in β-feeding pattern when compared to the values listed at nuclear databases. MTAS results are shifting the associated anti-neutrino energy spectrum towards lower energies. A decay pattern deduced for 142Ba is similar to earlier reported results
