Determining the Unithood of Word Sequences using Mutual Information and Independence Measure
Most works related to unithood were conducted as part of a larger effort for
the determination of termhood. Consequently, the number of independent research
that study the notion of unithood and produce dedicated techniques for
measuring unithood is extremely small. We propose a new approach, independent
of any influences of termhood, that provides dedicated measures to gather
linguistic evidence from parsed text and statistical evidence from Google
search engine for the measurement of unithood. Our evaluations revealed a
precision and recall of 98.68% and 91.82% respectively with an accuracy at
95.42% in measuring the unithood of 1005 test cases.Comment: More information is available at

Surrogate Brands - The pull to adopt an âOtherâ nation; via sports merchandise
A growing number of consumers are choosing to wear sporting merchandise, from an âotherâ nation â whom they have no geographic or ethnic affiliation with. In addition, nation sports branding appears to have scaled pandemic heights; by reaching fever pitch, when actively carrying its message across boarders. Consumer preferences are being driven past simple behavioural characteristics; towards more transient psychographic and emotional constructs. In short, nation branded sporting uniform is no longer viewed as demanding restrictive monogamous loyalty. Ownership of a uniform largely suggests exclusivity and encouraged competition. However, manufactures, national teams, athletes and sponsors are entering symbiotic brand relationships - where they are actively seeking publics, open to multiple adopted nationalities. This phenomenon draws consumers towards embracing temporal national identities, which are converted into an over-arching cross-border identity; ultimately gifting sports brands more significance. The following paper explores consumersâ entry into relationships with another nation, in preference to their own - in manner that has been likened to a form of surrogacy; by the authors. The aim is to stimulate further thinking in a field; which transcends national and cultural boundaries - in the interests of developing new insight, and to provide a platform for marketers to develop more effective communication
Enhanced Integrated Scoring for Cleaning Dirty Texts
An increasing number of approaches for ontology engineering from text are
gearing towards the use of online sources such as company intranet and the
World Wide Web. Despite such rise, not much work can be found in aspects of
preprocessing and cleaning dirty texts from online sources. This paper presents
an enhancement of an Integrated Scoring for Spelling error correction,
Abbreviation expansion and Case restoration (ISSAC). ISSAC is implemented as
part of a text preprocessing phase in an ontology engineering system. New
evaluations performed on the enhanced ISSAC using 700 chat records reveal an
improved accuracy of 98% as compared to 96.5% and 71% based on the use of only
basic ISSAC and of Aspell, respectively.Comment: More information is available at

Studying the Child Obesity Epidemic with Natural Experiments
We utilize clinical records of successive visits by children to pediatric clinics in Indianapolis to estimate the effects on their body mass of environmental changes near their homes. We compare results for fixed-residence children with those for cross-sectional data. Our environmental factors are fast food restaurants, supermarkets, parks, trails, and violent crimes, and 13 types of recreational amenities derived from the interpretation of annual aerial photographs. We looked for responses to these factors changing within buffers of 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, and 1 mile. We found that cross-sectional estimates are quite different from the Fixed Effects estimates of the impacts of amenities locating near a child. In cross section nearby fast food restaurants were associated with higher BMI and supermarkets with lower BMI. These results were reversed in the FE estimates. The recreational amenities that appear to lower children's BMI were fitness areas, kickball diamonds, and volleyball courts. We estimated that locating these amenities near their homes could reduce the weight of an overweight eight-year old boy by 3 to 6 pounds
Interstellar Interloper 1I/2017 U1: Observations from the NOT and WIYN Telescopes
We present observations of the interstellar interloper 1I/2017 U1 ('Oumuamua)
taken during its 2017 October flyby of Earth. The optical colors B-V =
0.700.06, V-R = 0.450.05, overlap those of the D-type Jovian Trojan
asteroids and are incompatible with the ultrared objects which are abundant in
the Kuiper belt. With a mean absolute magnitude = 22.95 and assuming a
geometric albedo = 0.1, we find an average radius of 55 m. No coma is
apparent; we deduce a limit to the dust mass production rate of only
210 kg s, ruling out the existence of exposed ice
covering more than a few m of the surface. Volatiles in this body, if they
exist, must lie beneath an involatile surface mantle 0.5 m thick,
perhaps a product of prolonged cosmic ray processing in the interstellar
medium. The lightcurve range is unusually large at 2.00.2
magnitudes. Interpreted as a rotational lightcurve the body has semi-axes
230 m 35 m. A 6:1 axis ratio is extreme relative to most
small solar system asteroids and suggests that albedo variations may
additionally contribute to the variability. The lightcurve is consistent with a
two-peaked period 8.26 hr but the period is non-unique as a result of
aliasing in the data. Except for its unusually elongated shape, 1I/2017 U1 is a
physically unremarkable, sub-kilometer, slightly red, rotating object from
another planetary system. The steady-state population of similar, 100 m
scale interstellar objects inside the orbit of Neptune is 10, each

Unpacking culture using Delphi
Following a phenomenological Expert Delphi Study of academics and practitioners, findings suggest that: a by-product of post-industrialism, Globalization, and Web2.0 is the value of investigating culture from an associated, rather than a disassociated state; cultural understanding and its application beyond simply defining and classifying has become the rate-determining step; and that national identity, whilst widely used, is not the most insightful unit. Furthermore, culture cannot be judged on a linear scale â it is dynamic, contextual, and perishable. For these reasons it is argued that when culture is measured, it should be viewed as something which is symbiotic and osmotic. The paper reports findings of field work done in decamping culture and branding with establishing their relationship and interdependence
Neuregulin-1 attenuates experimental cerebral malaria (ECM) pathogenesis by regulating ErbB4/AKT/STAT3 signaling.
BACKGROUND:Human cerebral malaria (HCM) is a severe form of malaria characterized by sequestration of infected erythrocytes (IRBCs) in brain microvessels, increased levels of circulating free heme and pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, brain swelling, vascular dysfunction, coma, and increased mortality. Neuregulin-1ÎČ (NRG-1) encoded by the gene NRG1, is a member of a family of polypeptide growth factors required for normal development of the nervous system and the heart. Utilizing an experimental cerebral malaria (ECM) model (Plasmodium berghei ANKA in C57BL/6), we reported that NRG-1 played a cytoprotective role in ECM and that circulating levels were inversely correlated with ECM severity. Intravenous infusion of NRG-1 reduced ECM mortality in mice by promoting a robust anti-inflammatory response coupled with reduction in accumulation of IRBCs in microvessels and reduced tissue damage. METHODS:In the current study, we examined how NRG-1 treatment attenuates pathogenesis and mortality associated with ECM. We examined whether NRG-1 protects against CXCL10- and heme-induced apoptosis using human brain microvascular endothelial (hCMEC/D3) cells and M059K neuroglial cells. hCMEC/D3 cells grown in a monolayer and a co-culture system with 30 ΌM heme and NRG-1 (100 ng/ml) were used to examine the role of NRG-1 on blood brain barrier (BBB) integrity. Using the in vivo ECM model, we examined whether the reduction of mortality was associated with the activation of ErbB4 and AKT and inactivation of STAT3 signaling pathways. For data analysis, unpaired t test or one-way ANOVA with Dunnett's or Bonferroni's post test was applied. RESULTS:We determined that NRG-1 protects against cell death/apoptosis of human brain microvascular endothelial cells and neroglial cells, the two major components of BBB. NRG-1 treatment improved heme-induced disruption of the in vitro BBB model consisting of hCMEC/D3 and human M059K cells. In the ECM murine model, NRG-1 treatment stimulated ErbB4 phosphorylation (pErbB4) followed by activation of AKT and inactivation of STAT3, which attenuated ECM mortality. CONCLUSIONS:Our results indicate a potential pathway by which NRG-1 treatment maintains BBB integrity in vitro, attenuates ECM-induced tissue injury, and reduces mortality. Furthermore, we postulate that augmenting NRG-1 during ECM therapy may be an effective adjunctive therapy to reduce CNS tissue injury and potentially increase the effectiveness of current anti-malaria therapy against human cerebral malaria (HCM)
