Fluorescent particles enable visualization of the flow patterns of gases at slow velocities. Through a transparent section in the gas line, a camera views the visible light emitted by the particles carried by the gas stream. Fine definition of the particle tracks are obtained at slow camera shutter speeds
Fabrication process of a high temperature polymer matrix engine duct
The process that was used in the molding of an advanced composite outer by-pass duct planned for the F404 engine is discussed. This duct was developed as a potential replacement for the existing titanium duct in order to reduce both the weight and cost of the duct. The composite duct is now going into the manufacturing technology portion of the program. The duct is fabricated using graphite cloth impregnated with the PMR-15 matrix system
Features controlling the early stages of creep deformation of Waspaloy
A model has been presented for describing primary and second stage creep. General equations were derived for the amount and time of primary creep. It was shown how the model can be used to extrapolate creep data. Applicability of the model was demonstrated for Waspaloy with gamma prime particle sizes from 75 - 1000 A creep tested in the temperature range 1000 - 1400 F (538 - 760 C). Survey of projected growth and problems facing air transportation, 1975 - 1985
Results are presented of a survey conducted to determine the current opinion of people working in air transportation demand forecasting on the future of air transportation over the next ten years. In particular, the survey included questions on future demand growth, load factor, fuel prices, introduction date for the next new aircraft, the priorities of problems facing air transportation, and the probability of a substantial change in air transportation regulation. The survey participants included: airlines, manufacturers, universities, government agencies, and other organizations (financial institutions, private research companies, etc.). The results are shown for the average responses within the organization represented as well as the overall averages

Vestibular-induced vomiting after vestibulocerebellar lesions
Vestibular stimulation, by sinusoidal electrical polarization of the labyrinths of decerebrate cats which can produce vomiting and related activity which resembles motion sickness was examined. The symptoms include panting, salivation, swallowing, and retching as well as vomiting. These symptoms can be produced in cats with lesions of the posterior cerebellar vermis. It is suggested that a transcerebellar pathway from the vestibular apparatus through the nodulus and uvula to the vomiting center is not essential for vestibular induced vomiting and the occurrence of many symptoms of motion
Vomiting Center reanalyzed: An electrical stimulation study
Electrical stimulation of the brainstem of 15 decerebrate cats produced stimulus-bound vomiting in only 4 animals. Vomiting was reproducible in only one cat. Effective stimulating sites were located in the solitary tract and reticular formation. Restricted localization of a vomiting center, stimulation of which evoked readily reproducible results, could not be obtained

Empowering Expression for Users with Aphasia through Constrained Creativity
Creative activities allow people to express themselves in rich, nuanced ways. However, being creative does not always come easily. For example, people with speech and language impairments, such as aphasia, face challenges in creative activities that involve language. In this paper, we explore the concept of constrained creativity as a way of addressing this challenge and enabling creative writing. We report an app, MakeWrite, that supports the constrained creation of digital texts through automated redaction. The app was co-designed with and for people with aphasia and was subsequently explored in a workshop with a group of people with aphasia. Participants were not only successful in crafting novel language, but, importantly, self-reported that the app was crucial in enabling them to do so. We refect on the potential of technology-supported constrained creativity as a means of empowering expression amongst users with diverse needs
Index theorems for quantum graphs
In geometric analysis, an index theorem relates the difference of the numbers
of solutions of two differential equations to the topological structure of the
manifold or bundle concerned, sometimes using the heat kernels of two
higher-order differential operators as an intermediary. In this paper, the case
of quantum graphs is addressed. A quantum graph is a graph considered as a
(singular) one-dimensional variety and equipped with a second-order
differential Hamiltonian H (a "Laplacian") with suitable conditions at
vertices. For the case of scale-invariant vertex conditions (i.e., conditions
that do not mix the values of functions and of their derivatives), the constant
term of the heat-kernel expansion is shown to be proportional to the trace of
the internal scattering matrix of the graph. This observation is placed into
the index-theory context by factoring the Laplacian into two first-order
operators, H =A*A, and relating the constant term to the index of A. An
independent consideration provides an index formula for any differential
operator on a finite quantum graph in terms of the vertex conditions. It is
found also that the algebraic multiplicity of 0 as a root of the secular
