    On the importance of relative permeability data for estimating CO2 injectivity in brine aquifers

    Performance assessment of possible CO2 storage schemes is often investigated through numerical simulation of the CO2 injection process. An important criterion of interest is the maximum sustainable injection rate. Relevant numerical models generally employ a multi-phase extension to Darcy's law, requiring data concerning the evolution of relative permeability for CO2 and brine mixtures with increasing CO2 saturation. Relative permeability data is acutely scarce for many geographical regions of concern and often cited as a major source of uncertainty. However, such data is expensive and time consuming to acquire. With a view to improving our understanding concerning the significance of relative permeability uncertainty on injectivity, this article presents a sensitivity analysis of sustainable CO2 injection rate with respect to permeability, porosity and relative permeability. Based on available relative permeability data obtained from 25 sandstone and carbonate cores discussed in the literature, injectivity uncertainty associated with relative permeability is found to be as high as ±57% for open aquifers and low permeability closed aquifers (100 mD), aquifer compressibility plays a more important role and the uncertainty due to relative permeability is found to reduce to ±6%

    Comparing Criteria for Circular Orbits in General Relativity

    We study a simple analytic solution to Einstein's field equations describing a thin spherical shell consisting of collisionless particles in circular orbit. We then apply two independent criteria for the identification of circular orbits, which have recently been used in the numerical construction of binary black hole solutions, and find that both yield equivalent results. Our calculation illustrates these two criteria in a particularly transparent framework and provides further evidence that the deviations found in those numerical binary black hole solutions are not caused by the different criteria for circular orbits.Comment: 4 pages; to appear in PRD as a Brief Report; added and corrected reference

    Observation of magnetic Feshbach resonances between Cs and 173Yb

    We report the observation of magnetic Feshbach resonances between 173 Yb and 133 Cs . In a mixture of Cs atoms prepared in the ( f = 3 , m f = 3 ) state and unpolarized fermionic 173 Yb , we observe resonant atom loss due to two sets of magnetic Feshbach resonances around 622 and 702 G. Resonances for individual Yb nuclear spin components m i , Yb are split by its interaction with the Cs electronic spin, which also provides the main coupling mechanism for the observed resonances. The observed splittings and relative resonance strengths are in good agreement with theoretical predictions from coupled-channel calculations

    Herbivores, but not other insects, are scarce on alien plants

    Understanding how the landscape-scale replacement of indigenous plants with alien plants influences ecosystem structure and functioning is critical in a world characterized by increasing biotic homogenization. An important step in this process is to assess the impact on invertebrate communities. Here we analyse insect species richness and abundance in sweep collections from indigenous and alien (Australasian) woody plant species in South Africa’s Western Cape. We use phylogenetically relevant comparisons and compare one indigenous with three Australasian alien trees within each of Fabaceae: Mimosoideae, Myrtaceae, and Proteaceae: Grevilleoideae. Although some of the alien species analysed had remarkably high abundances of herbivores, even when intentionally introduced biological control agents are discounted, overall, herbivorous insect assemblages from alien plants were slightly less abundant and less diverse compared with those from indigenous plants – in accordance with predictions from the enemy release hypothesis. However, there were no clear differences in other insect feeding guilds.We conclude that insect assemblages from alien plants are generally quite diverse, and significant differences between these and assemblages from indigenous plants are only evident for herbivorous insects.Centre of Excellence for Invasion Biolog

    The Effect of Hot Deformation Parameters on Microstructure Evolution of the α-Phase in Ti-6Al-4V

    The effect of high-temperature deformation and the influence of hot working parameters on microstructure evolution during isothermal hot forging of Ti-6Al-4V in the alpha phase field were investigated. A series of hot isothermal axis-symmetric compression tests were carried out at temperatures both low and high in the alpha stability field [(1153 K and 1223 K (880 °C and 950 °C), respectively], using three strain rates (0.01, 0.1 and 1.0/s) relevant to industrial press forging. The microstructures and orientation of the alpha laths were determined using optical microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction techniques. The experimental results show that there is a change in lath morphology of the secondary α phase under the influence of the deformation parameters, and that α lath thickness appears to have little influence on flow behavior

    Extrusion-spheronisation of highly loaded 5-ASA multiparticulate dosage forms

    The aim of the current work was to develop an extrusion-spheronisation (E-S) route to manufacture pellets with a high loading ( 6590. wt%) of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA). Ram extrusion studies, supported by centrifuge testing, were employed to investigate the effect of the chemical (acidity) and physical (particle size and shape) characteristics of 5-ASA on the ability of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC)-based pastes to retain water when subjected to pressure. Liquid phase migration (LPM) within the paste during the extrusion, and hence variation in water content of extrudates and reproducibility of the final E-S product, was generally observed. The extent of LPM was found to be related to both the drug loading and its physical properties, most notably the particle shape (needle-like). A reduction in particle size, combined with a change in the shape of the 5-ASA particles, allowed LPM to be reduced considerably or eliminated. The performance of colloidal grades of MCC (Avicel RC591 and CL611) as alternative extrusion aids to the standard Avicel PH101 was also investigated: these proved to be superior aids for the highly loaded 5-ASA pastes as their greater water retention capacity mitigated LPM. Combining these results yielded a route for manufacturing pellets with 5-ASA loading 6590. wt%

    Generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov Reductions and KdV Type Hierarchies

    Generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov (DS) hierarchies are constructed through local reductions of Hamiltonian flows generated by monodromy invariants on the dual of a loop algebra. Following earlier work of De Groot et al, reductions based upon graded regular elements of arbitrary Heisenberg subalgebras are considered. We show that, in the case of the nontwisted loop algebra ℓ(gln)\ell(gl_n), graded regular elements exist only in those Heisenberg subalgebras which correspond either to the partitions of nn into the sum of equal numbers n=prn=pr or to equal numbers plus one n=pr+1n=pr+1. We prove that the reduction belonging to the grade 11 regular elements in the case n=prn=pr yields the p×pp\times p matrix version of the Gelfand-Dickey rr-KdV hierarchy, generalizing the scalar case p=1p=1 considered by DS. The methods of DS are utilized throughout the analysis, but formulating the reduction entirely within the Hamiltonian framework provided by the classical r-matrix approach leads to some simplifications even for p=1p=1.Comment: 43 page
