    Implementation of a pilot parent-focused physical activity program with Latino families in a Head Start program

    Introduction and Background. Physical activity (PA), even at young age, is associated with physical and psychological health. This study determined the feasibility of implementing a parent-led PA intervention and evaluated potential outcomes. Methods. Parent-child pairs from a Head Start center were randomized into intervention (N=20) and control (N=18) groups. All families received a bag of play equipment. Parents completed questionnaires assessing their own and their children’s PA, as well as self-efficacy, social control (SC), and social support (SS) regarding their provision of PA to their children. Parents in the intervention were trained in self-regulatory skills, facilitation of PA, and attended two playdates. Parents rated the playdates, activity sheet and equipment on a 5-point Likert scale. Results. Parents rated the playdates (M=4.9, SD=0.3), the activity sheet (M=4.7, SD=0.7) and the equipment bag (M=5, SD=0.0) highly. Child’s PA, parent’s moderate-to-vigorous PA, total PA, parental efficacy, SC, and SS showed no significant intervention effects. Overall, child and parent PA increased significantly over time (p=.02 for both). Conclusions. The intervention was positively received, with 90% completion rate and high ratings of the intervention materials. Longer interventions with more contact may be needed to influence potential outcomes

    Tilapia By-product Hydrolysate Powder In Diets For Nile Tilapia Larvae

    This study aimed to evaluate the digestibility of tilapia by-product protein hydrolysate powder (TBHP) from tilapia filleting by-product, and its inclusion in diets for Nile tilapia larvae. In order to determine the apparent digestibility coefficients, two diets were formulated, the reference diet and the test diet (20% of TBHP) and, to evaluate the inclusion, six diets were formulated, which were with 0.0, 2.0; 4.0; 6.0, and 8.0% of TBHP. The apparent digestibility coefficients of crude protein and gross energy were 89.5 and 98.3%, respectively. At levels above 4.0% of inclusion of TBHP, the weight, final length and weight gain were impaired, however, survival rate was higher (p < 0.05). The TBHP can be used in diets for tilapia due to the high digestibility coefficients for crude protein and gross energy. The inclusion of up to 4.0% of TBHP does not affect the reproductive performance and survival rate of Nile tilapia larvae.3911

Enzymatic hydrolysis of carcass, head and skin of tilapia was performed, as well as the separation of oil, residual solids and soluble proteins by centrifugation at high temperature and the spray drying of the protein fraction. Factorial designs were employed in the assays to evaluate the operating conditions of the spray dryer (inlet and outlet temperatures and flow rate) and the inclusion of drying aid agents (maltodextrin and calcium carbonate). The spray drying showed the best results with air inlet temperature of 190 degrees C, outlet temperature of 90 degrees C, flow rate of 30 L.h(-1) including 10% maltodextrin (mass) in the liquid feed as a drying aid.     Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)This study describes the synthesis of fourteen thiazinanones from a multicomponent reaction of 2-morpholinoehtylamine (as primary amine), arenealdehydes (as carbonyl compound) and the mercaptopropionic acid using both conventional (thermal heating) and ultrasound methodologies. Through thermal heating methodology, the thiazinanones were obtained in 49 to 97% yields for 16 hours and through sonochemistry methodology, the reaction time was reduced for 25 minutes with yields 41 to 88%. The full identification and characterization of unpublished heterocycles were achieved by proton (H-1) and carbon 13 (C-13) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and infrared.
