    The object of the invention is to provide an improved converter for converting one direct current voltage to another. A plurality of phased square wave voltages are provided from a ring counter through amplifiers to a like plurality of output transformers. Each of these transformers has two windings, and S(1) winding and an S(2) winding. The S(1) windings are connected in series, then the S(2) windings are connected in series, and finally, the two sets of windings are connected in series. One of six SCRs is connected between each two series connected windings to a positive output terminal and one of diodes is connected between each set of two windings of a zero output terminal. By virtue of this configuration, a quite high average direct current voltage is obtained, which varies between full voltage and two-thirds full voltage rather than from full voltage to zero. Further, its variation, ripple frequency, is reduced to one-sixth of that present in a single phase system. Application to raising battery voltage for an ion propulsion system is mentioned

    Let Γ\Gamma be a group which is virtually free of rank at least 2 and let Ftd(Γ)\mathcal{F}_{td}(\Gamma) be the family of totally disconnected, locally compact groups containing Γ\Gamma as a co-compact lattice. We prove that the values of the scale function with respect to groups in Ftd(Γ)\mathcal{F}_{td}(\Gamma) evaluated on the subset Γ\Gamma have only finitely many prime divisors.     Non-degenerate four-wave mixing in rubidium vapor: transient regime

    We investigate the transient response of the generated light from Four-Wave Mixing (FWM) in the diamond configuration using a step-down field excitation. The transients show fast decay times and oscillations that depend on the detunings and intensities of the fields. A simplified model taking into account the thermal motion of the atoms, propagation, absorption and dispersion effects shows qualitative agreement with the experimental observations with the energy levels in rubidium (5S1/2, 5P1/2, 5P3/2 and 6S1/2). The atomic polarization comes from all the contributions of different velocity classes of atoms in the ensemble modifying dramatically the total transient behavior of the light from FWM.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, to be published in Physical Review

    Muscimol acts in dorsomedial but not paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus to suppress cardiovascular effects of stress

    Both the dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus (DMH) and the paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus (PVN) have been implicated in the neural control of the cardiovascular response to stress. We used the GABAA agonist muscimol to inhibit neuronal activation and attempted to identify hypothalamic nuclei required for the cardiovascular response to air stress. Chronically instrumented rats received bilateral injections of either 80 pmol of muscimol or 100 nl of saline vehicle into the DMH, the PVN, or an intermediate area (including the rostral edge of the DMH and the region between the two nuclei) and were placed immediately in a restraining tube and subjected to 20 min of air stress. In all rats, air stress after vehicle injections caused marked increases in heart rate (137 +/- 6 beats/min) and blood pressure (26 +/- 2 mmHg). Microinjection of muscimol into the DMH suppressed the heart rate and blood pressure response by 85 and 68%, respectively. Identical microinjection of muscimol into the intermediate area between the DMH and the PVN attenuated the increases in heart rate by only 46% and in blood pressure by 52%. In contrast, similar injections into the vicinity of the PVN failed to alter the cardiovascular response to air stress. These findings demonstrate that muscimol-induced inhibition of neuronal activity in the region of the DMH blocks air stress-induced increases in heart rate and arterial pressure, whereas similar treatment in the area of the PVN has no effect
