PDE Face: A Novel 3D Face Model
YesWe introduce a novel approach to face models, which
exploits the use of Partial Differential Equations (PDE) to
generate the 3D face. This addresses some common
problems of existing face models. The PDE face benefits
from seamless merging of surface patches by using only a
relatively small number of parameters based on boundary
curves. The PDE face also provides users with a great
degree of freedom to individualise the 3D face by
adjusting a set of facial boundary curves. Furthermore, we
introduce a uv-mesh texture mapping method. By
associating the texels of the texture map with the vertices
of the uv mesh in the PDE face, the new texture mapping
method eliminates the 3D-to-2D association routine in
texture mapping. Any specific PDE face can be textured
without the need for the facial expression in the texture
map to match exactly that of the 3D face model

Parametric Representations of Facial Expressions on PDE-Based Surfaces
NoParameterisation of facial expressions on PDE surface
representations of human faces are presented in this
work. Taking advantage of the boundary-value approach
inherent to Bloor-Wilson PDE method, facial expressions
are achieved by manipulating the original boundary curves.
Such curves are responsible for generating a surface representation
of a human face in its neutral configuration,
so that regions on these curves represent a given facial
expression in a fast and realistic manner. Additionally, the
parameterisation proposed here is carried out by applying
different mathematical transformations to the affected
curves according to the corresponding facial expression.
Full analytic expressions parameterising some of the most
common facial expressions such as smiling and eyebrow
raising are in this work. Some graphical examples of these
facial expressions are used to illustrate the results obtained
using Bloor-Wilson PDE method as the foundations of the
parameterisation scheme proposed here. Thus, it is shown
that an efficient, intuitive and realistic parameterisation of
facial expressions is attainable using Bloor-Wilson PDE
method in along with a suitable mathematical expression

PDE-based Facial Animation: Making the Complex Simple
YesDirect parameterisation is among the most widely used facial animation techniques but requires complicated ways to animate face models which have complex topology. This paper develops a simple solution by introducing a PDE-based facial animation scheme. Using a PDE face model means we only need to animate a group of boundary curves without using any other conventional surface interpolation algorithms. We describe the basis of the method and show results from a practical implementation.EPSR

Shape Morphing Using PDE Surfaces
NoA methodology for shape morphing using partial differential
equation (PDE) surfaces is presented in this work.
The use of the PDE formulation shows how shape morphing
can be based on a boundary-value approach by which
intermediate shapes can be created. Furthermore, the
mathematical properties of the method give rise to several
alternatives in which morphing one shape into another
can be achieved. Three of these alternatives are presented
here. The first one is based on the gradual variation of
the weighted sum of the boundary conditions for each
surface, the second one consists of varying the Fourier
mode for which the PDE is solved whilst the third results
from a combination of the first two. Examples showing the
efficiency of these methodologies are presented. Thus, it is
shown that the PDE based approach for morphing, when
combined with a parametric variation of the boundary
conditions, is capable of obtaining smooth intermediate
surfaces automatically
New and old hotspots for rickettsial spotted fever acquired in Tasmania, 2012-2017
OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of Tasmania‐acquired rickettsial disease notified to the Department of Health in Tasmania from 2012 to 2017 inclusive.
METHODS: Data on rickettsiosis cases acquired and notified in Tasmania between 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2017 were analysed descriptively.
RESULTS: Eighteen cases of rickettsial infection notified in Tasmania 2012–17 and likely acquired in the state met one of three case definitions: 12 confirmed (67%), four probable (22%), and two possible (11%). The mean number of cases per year was 3.0 (population rate 0.6 per 100,000 population/year); 60% of cases occurred in November and December. Cases were more commonly older males. Fever, lethargy, and rash were commonly reported symptoms. Thirteen cases were likely acquired on Flinders Island, three around Great Oyster Bay and two in the Midlands.
CONCLUSIONS: This study extends our knowledge of the epidemiology of rickettsial disease in Tasmania. This is the first account including confirmed cases acquired in the Midlands of Tasmania.
IMPLICATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH: Increased knowledge and awareness of epidemiology of rickettsial infection in Tasmania is essential for timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment. These findings bear wider relevance outside Tasmania because visitors may also be at risk
Validation of PigBal model predictions for pig manure production
PigBal is a mass balance model that uses pig diet, digestibility and production data to predict the manure solids and nutrients produced by pig herds. It has been widely used for designing piggery effluent treatment systems and sustainable reuse areas at Australian piggeries. More recently, PigBal has also been used to estimate piggery volatile solids production for assessing greenhouse gas emissions for statutory reporting purposes by government, and for evaluating the energy potential from anaerobic digestion of pig effluent. This paper has compared PigBal predictions of manure total, volatile, and fixed solids, and nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), with manure production data generated in a replicated trial, which involved collecting manure from pigs housed in metabolic pens. Predictions of total, volatile, and fixed solids and K in the excreted manure were relatively good (combined diet R2 ≥ 0.79, modelling efficiency (EF) ≥ 0.70) whereas predictions of N and P, were generally less accurate (combined diet R2 0.56 and 0.66, EF 0.19 and -0.22, respectively). PigBal generally under-predicted lower N values while over-predicting higher values, and generally over-predicted manure P production for all diets. The most likely causes for this less accurate performance were ammonium-N volatilisation losses between manure excretion and sample analysis, and the inability of PigBal to account for higher rates of P uptake by pigs fed diets containing phytase. The outcomes of this research suggest that there is a need for further investigation and model development to enhance PigBal's capabilities for more accurately assessing nutrient loads. However, PigBal's satisfactory performance in predicting solids excretion demonstrates that it is suitable for assessing the methane component of greenhouse gas emission and the energy potential from anaerobic digestion of volatile solids in piggery effluent. The apparent overestimation of N and P excretion may result in conservative nutrient application rates to land and the over-prediction of the nitrous oxide component of greenhouse gas emissions. © CSIRO 2016
SDG5 “Gender Equality” and the COVID-19 pandemic: A rapid assessment of health system responses in selected upper-middle and high-income countries
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted healthcare and societies, exacerbating existing inequalities for women and girls across every sphere. Our study explores health system responses to gender equality goals during the COVID-19 pandemic and inclusion in future policies. Methods: We apply a qualitative comparative approach, drawing on secondary sources and expert information; the data was collected from March–July 2022. Australia, Brazil, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the USA were selected, reflecting upper-middle and high-income countries with established public health and gender policies but different types of healthcare systems and epidemiological and geo-political conditions. Three sub-goals of SDG5 were analyzed: maternity care/reproductive health, gender-based violence, and gender equality/women's leadership. Results: We found similar trends across countries. Pandemic policies strongly cut into women's health, constrained prevention and support services, and weakened reproductive rights, while essential maternity care services were kept open. Intersecting gender inequalities were reinforced, sexual violence increased and women's leadership was weak. All healthcare systems failed to protect women's health and essential public health targets. Yet there were relevant differences in the responses to increased violence and reproductive rights, ranging from some support measures in Australia to an abortion ban in the US. Conclusions: Our study highlights a need for revising pandemic policies through a feminist lens
A community survey of coverage and adverse events following country-wide triple-drug mass drug administration for lymphatic filariasis elimination, Samoa 2018
The Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis has made considerable progress but is experiencing challenges in meeting targets in some countries. Recent World Health Organization guidelines have recommended two rounds of triple-drug therapy with ivermectin, diethylcarbamazine (DEC), and albendazole (IDA), in areas where mass drug administration (MDA) results with two drugs (DEC and albendazole) have been suboptimal, as is the case in Samoa. In August 2018, Samoa was the first country in the world to implement countrywide triple-drug MDA. This paper aims to describe Samoa’s experience with program coverage and adverse events (AEs) in the first round of triple-drug MDA. We conducted a large cross-sectional community survey to assess MDA awareness, reach, compliance, coverage and AEs in September/October 2018, 7–11 weeks after the first round of triple-drug MDA. In our sample of 4420 people aged ≥2 years (2.2% of the population), age-adjusted estimates indicated that 89.0% of the eligible population were offered MDA, 83.9% of the eligible population took MDA (program coverage), and 80.2% of the total population took MDA (epidemiological coverage). Overall, 83.8% (2986/3563) reported that they did not feel unwell at all after taking MDA. Mild AEs (feeling unwell but able to do normal everyday things) were reported by 13.3% (476/3563) and moderate or severe AEs (feeling unwell and being unable to do normal everyday activities such as going to work or school) by 2.9% (103/3563) of participants. This study following the 2018 triple-drug MDA in Samoa demonstrated a high reported program awareness and reach of 90.8% and 89.0%, respectively. Age-adjusted program coverage of 83.9% of the total population showed that MDA was well accepted and well tolerated by the community
Disrupting the ventral premotor cortex interferes with the contribution of action observation to use-dependent plasticity
Action observation (AO), observing another individual perform an action, has been implicated in several higher cognitive processes including forming basic motor memories. Previous work has shown that physical practice (PP) results in cortical motor representational changes, referred to as use-dependent plasticity (UDP), and that AO combined with PP potentiates UDP in both healthy adults and stroke patients. In humans, AO results in activation of the ventral premotor cortex (PMv), however, whether PMv activation has a functional contribution to UDP is not known. Here, we studied the effects disruption of PMv has on UDP when subjects performed PP combined with AO (PP+AO). Subjects participated in 2 randomized-crossover sessions measuring the amount of UDP resulting from PP+AO while receiving disruptive (1Hz) transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the fMRI activated PMv or over orbito-frontal cortex (FC, Sham). We found that unlike the sham session, disruptive TMS over PMv reduced the beneficial contribution of AO to UDP. To ensure that disruption of PMv was specifically interfering with the contribution of AO and not PP, subjects completed two more control sessions where they performed only PP while receiving disruptive TMS over PMv or FC. We found that the magnitude of UDP for both control sessions was similar to PP+AO with TMS over PMv. These findings suggest that the fMRI activation found in PMv during action observation studies is functionally relevant to task performance, at least for the beneficial effects that AO exerts over motor training
