This project looked to take an inventory of the current Construction Management computer lab, communicate with students and other stakeholders about how the computer lab is used, look ahead to how the lab will be used in the future, and create a new design that best suits the Construction Management department

GR-151 - Performance Analysis and Review of Encrypted DNS Protocols

    Get PDF
Data encryption has quickly become an essential service of the internet. When it was first developed, data encryption and privacy were not prioritized. However, as the internet has grown and globalized, ensuring data privacy has become a prevailing requirement for conducting all types of business over the internet. Since privacy was an afterthought in the early development of the internet, many technologies have been built on top of existing ones in order to rectify security holes inherent in design. One of the more recent areas where this is happening is Domain Name Resolution. Until recently, the mechanism of resolving domain names did not have any security or privacy functions built in. With the rise of big data and the never-ending thirst for more and more data, DNS resolution has been exposed as an area where data/privacy leaks were occurring

How has supranational (EU) policy shaped the local in Ireland? A case study of South East Cork Area Development (SECAD)

    Get PDF
This research sets out to investigate how the process of implementing EU rural development policies in Ireland has led to the creation of new and highly dynamic territorial entities. Since 1987, Local Action Groups (LAG’s) that crossed established bureaucratic, administrative, community and territorial structures such as the Catholic parish, Electoral Districts (ED’s), Rural Districts (RD’s) and county boundaries have become the key ‘shapers’ of these new territorial entities. Much of the scope of this dissertation is predominantly historical, dealing with the period 1997 – 2007, so a context outside of the literature review is set out into which the main body of research will be presented. Concepts such as ‘rural’, ‘community’ and ‘rural and community development’ will be briefly explored before examining the issues and politics involved in rural restructurin

Electric Motorcycle Using Hub Motor Technology

    Get PDF
Due to the current high demand for clean, efficient transportation systems, designers have looked to the electric motor as a means to end the reign of the internal combustion engine (ICE). This has lead to the development of numerous electric vehicles, including motorcycles and scooters, as well as the traditional automobile. The electric drive systems in these vehicles have, for the most part, been retrofitted to mate with existing systems of power transfer commonly found in ICE vehicles. We propose to design a hub motor drive system for motorcycles that eliminates the reuse of these components not necessary in electric motorcycle design. By positioning the motor inside the drive wheel, greater efficiency is achieved, significant parts are eliminated, and space within the frame typically used to house drive components is opened up for battery systems. We plan on utilizing pancake electric motors because of their high torque in narrow configurations. Our motor will be fixed to the swingarm of the bike and will drive an outer housing that will double as the rim of the wheel. We intend to build a functional prototype of the proposed design and fit it to a motorcycle frame for analysis and testing

Identification of dfrA14 in two distinct plasmids conferring trimethoprim resistance in Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine the distribution and genetic basis of trimethoprim resistance in Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae isolates from pigs in England. METHODS: Clinical isolates collected between 1998 and 2011 were tested for resistance to trimethoprim and sulphonamide. The genetic basis of trimethoprim resistance was determined by shotgun WGS analysis and the subsequent isolation and sequencing of plasmids. RESULTS: A total of 16 (out of 106) A. pleuropneumoniae isolates were resistant to both trimethoprim (MIC >32 mg/L) and sulfisoxazole (MIC ≥256 mg/L), and a further 32 were resistant only to sulfisoxazole (MIC ≥256 mg/L). Genome sequence data for the trimethoprim-resistant isolates revealed the presence of the dfrA14 dihydrofolate reductase gene. The distribution of plasmid sequences in multiple contigs suggested the presence of two distinct dfrA14-containing plasmids in different isolates, which was confirmed by plasmid isolation and sequencing. Both plasmids encoded mobilization genes, the sulphonamide resistance gene sul2, as well as dfrA14 inserted into strA, a streptomycin-resistance-associated gene, although the gene order differed between the two plasmids. One of the plasmids further encoded the strB streptomycin-resistance-associated gene. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first description of mobilizable plasmids conferring trimethoprim resistance in A. pleuropneumoniae and, to our knowledge, the first report of dfrA14 in any member of the Pasteurellaceae. The identification of dfrA14 conferring trimethoprim resistance in A. pleuropneumoniae isolates will facilitate PCR screens for resistance to this important antimicrobial

    Buffalo Reading List

    Get PDF
This reading list gathers together literature focused on buffalo (also known as bison) to support ongoing efforts to restore this iconic species to its keystone cultural and ecological role. The books and articles compiled here are grounded in a wide range of academic disciplines and approaches, representing many distinct ways of thinking about buffalo within the realm of Western sciences. This is not intended to be an exhaustive account of what is known about buffalo, much of which is held in Indigenous knowledge systems and communities. This academic list is designed as a resource for those working towards buffalo restoration, including conservation practitioners, researchers, parks and government officials, and Tribal communities. It is divided into categories according to either discipline or thematic focus, each containing a subset of pertinent literature. Topics include the paleobiology of bison, histories of buffalo loss, relationships between Indigenous Peoples and buffalo, buffalo restoration and reintroduction, buffalo ecology, buffalo and climate change, governance and human dimensions of buffalo, bison and cattle, bison as livestock, and the genetics of bison. This list is intended as a living document to grow with the increasingly rich scholarship on buffalo, and will be updated regularly

The place of popular music in Scotland’s cultural policy

    Get PDF
n the last two decades the status of popular music as both a cultural activity and creative industry has changed significantly in Scottish and UK cultural policy. The change is in line with a broader shift away from thinking of the arts as cultural activity in need of subsidy and towards treating them as part of the creative economy. The current cultural policy landscape pertaining to popular music is mapped out, drawing on interviews and an online survey with members of the Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA) and complementary interviews with stakeholders from relevant government and arms-length funding and development bodies. The Scottish Government's (SG) White Paper on independence highlighted the creative industries as one of five growth sectors key to the Scottish economy, but for popular music – and in line with the global music industry – many working in the Scottish music industry face acute challenges. Given EU regulations (and the Scottish Government's preference to remain in the EU) and international agreements in areas like broadcasting and copyright, if they are to flourish many members of the SMIA will likely need to strengthen their relationships with the wider UK and global music industry, regardless of the outcome of the referendum on independence

A generation apart? Youth and political participation in Britain

    Get PDF
Conventional wisdom holds that young people in Britain are alienated from politics, with some claiming that this reflects a wider crisis of legitimacy that should be met by initiatives to increase citizenship. This article addresses these areas, presenting both panel survey and focus group data from first-time voters. It concludes that, contrary to the findings from many predominantly quantitative studies of political participation, young people are interested in political matters, and do support the democratic process. However they feel a sense of anti-climax having voted for the first time, and are critical of those who have been elected to positions of political power. If they are a generation apart, this is less to do with apathy, and more to do with their engaged scepticism about ‘formal’ politics in Britain
