    Poisson multi-Bernoulli mixture trackers: continuity through random finite sets of trajectories

    The Poisson multi-Bernoulli mixture (PMBM) is an unlabelled multi-target distribution for which the prediction and update are closed. It has a Poisson birth process, and new Bernoulli components are generated on each new measurement as a part of the Bayesian measurement update. The PMBM filter is similar to the multiple hypothesis tracker (MHT), but seemingly does not provide explicit continuity between time steps. This paper considers a recently developed formulation of the multi-target tracking problem as a random finite set (RFS) of trajectories, and derives two trajectory RFS filters, called PMBM trackers. The PMBM trackers efficiently estimate the set of trajectories, and share hypothesis structure with the PMBM filter. By showing that the prediction and update in the PMBM filter can be viewed as an efficient method for calculating the time marginals of the RFS of trajectories, continuity in the same sense as MHT is established for the PMBM filter

    X-ray and Radio Variability of M31*, The Andromeda Galaxy Nuclear Supermassive Black Hole

    We confirm our earlier tentative detection of M31* in X-rays and measure its light-curve and spectrum. Observations in 2004-2005 find M31* rather quiescent in the X-ray and radio. However, X-ray observations in 2006-2007 and radio observations in 2002 show M31* to be highly variable at times. A separate variable X-ray source is found near P1, the brighter of the two optical nuclei. The apparent angular Bondi radius of M31* is the largest of any black hole, and large enough to be well resolved with Chandra. The diffuse emission within this Bondi radius is found to have an X-ray temperature ~0.3 keV and density 0.1 cm-3, indistinguishable from the hot gas in the surrounding regions of the bulge given the statistics allowed by the current observations. The X-ray source at the location of M31* is consistent with a point source and a power law spectrum with energy slope 0.9+/-0.2.     Diffraction theory and focusing of light by left-handed materials

    A diffraction theory in a system consisting of left-handed and right-handed materials is proposed. The theory is based upon the Huygens's principle and the Kirchhoff's integral and it is valid if the wavelength is smaller than any relevant length of the system. The theory is applied to the calculation of the smearing of the foci of the Veselago lens due to the finite wavelength. We show that the Veselago lens is a unique optical instrument for the 3D imaging, but it is not a ``superlens'' as it has been claimed recently.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure

    Hydrodynamic Design of the Fastrac Turbopump

    A 60,000 lb trust liquid Oxygen (LOX) and rocket propellant #1 (RP-1) rocket engine is being developed at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) as part of NASA's ongoing effort to lower the cost of access to space. The goal of the program is to demonstrate a low cost rocket engine with acceptable performance. In order to reduce design and development risk, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was used extensively in the design process, especially in the design of the turbopump. This paper documents the process used and significant results obtained during the design of the LOX and RP-1 pumps. This includes the design of the inlet manifolds, the integral inducer-impellers, the diffusers, and the collector volutes. The resulting designs incorporate low-cost design features while meeting the engine cycle requirements
