    Synergistic Zinc(II) and Formate Doping of Perovskites: Thermal Phase Stabilization of α-FAPbI<sub>3</sub> and Enhanced Photoluminescence Lifetime of FA<sub>0.8</sub>MA<sub>0.2</sub>PbI<sub>3</sub> up to 3.7 µs

    Adding zinc (II) cations and formate anions improves the thermal phase stability of α-FAPbI3 materials, and the spin-coated thin films of such doped FAPbI3 (produced using MACl) show an increased emission lifetime of up to 3.7 μs on quartz (for FA0.8MA0.2PbI3). This work investigates the effects of zinc and formate on the phase stability and time-resolved photoluminescence of FAPbI3 perovskites for solar cell applications. Perovskite samples with varying concentrations of zinc and formate were made by incorporating different amounts of zinc formate and zinc iodide and were characterized with XRD. Doping levels of 1.7% Zn(II) and 1.0% formate (relative to Pb) seem optimal. The thermal phase stability of the doped perovskite powders (FAPbI3) and thin films (FA0.8MA0.2PbI3) was assessed. XRD of the thin films after 6 months shows only the alpha-phase. The time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy of the doped spin-coated perovskite samples (FA0.8MA0.2PbI3 produced using MACl) is reported. The results show that synergy between an anionic and a cationic dopant can take place, making the perovskite thermally more phase-stable (not converting to the yellow delta-phase) with a longer charge carrier lifetime.     Assessment of the impact of aquatic resources research by ICLARM: scope and methodologies

    The importance of quantifying the economic returns to investments in aquatic resources research together with the social, environmental and institutional impacts of such investments is widely recognized among ICLARM's donors, trustees and beneficiaries. As with other Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) centers, ICLARM is being asked to provide specific accounts of the outputs of its research and their impact on farms and on fisheries, including their socioeconomic impact. Such impact information has become a necessary, though not sufficient, basis for setting priorities and allocating resources for research for the CGIAR centers. This paper discusses the types and methods of impact assessment relevant to ICLARM's work. A three-pronged assessment approach is envisaged to capture the full range of impacts: 1) ex ante assessment for research priority setting; 2) assessment prior to dissemination or adoption along with monitoring and evaluation; and 3) ex post impact assessment.     Geographical influence of heat stress on milk production of Holstein dairy cattle on pasture in South Africa under current and future climatic conditions

    Heat stress, as a consequence of global warming, can have a profound effect on dairy cattle in South Africa. In this paper, current milk production data of Holstein dairy herds on pasture in South Africa, together with climate variables related to heat stress, were used to model and identify geographical areas for optimal milk production under current and future climatic conditions. To model the influence of heat stress on milk production of Holstein dairy herds on pasture in South Africa, the maximum entropy (Maxent) modelling technique was used in a novel approach to model and map optimal milk-producing areas. Geographical locations of farms with top milk-producing Holstein herds on pasture were used as presence-only data points. Only three of a possible eight climate variables that made significant contributions to the model were included, namely evaporation rate, relative humidity and mean annual temperature. The modelling technique showed good capability to capture the geographical influence of heat stress on milk production of Holstein dairy cattle and to reconstruct this relationship in sites where no data were available. The method performed well with low test omission rates, an area under curve (AUC) value of 0.929, and mean training data predictive rate of 0.66 (SD = 0.13). The modelled map indicated optimal milk production areas in the eastern parts of South Africa, which correlates well with the geographical influence of heat stress as represented by the temperature humidity index for the country. Future climate change projections (2046–2065) were used to predict optimal milk-producing areas for the future, indicating progressive shrinking of currently suitable areas and a geographical shift towards the southern parts of the east coast of South Africa. Possible long-term viable alternatives are suggested, including changes in nutrition and replacing existing breeds with more heat tolerant genotypes.Keywords: climate change, climate variables, Maxent modelling, temperature-humidity inde

    Impacts of implementing geogebra on eleventh grade student’s learning of Euclidean Geometry

    The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficiency of applying GeoGebra software as a teaching tool to enhance high poverty, rural grade 11 students’ understanding of Euclidean geometry circle theorems. The experimental group received instruction on how to use, make simple constructions, and measure elements in GeoGebra. The control group was taught in a traditional lecture method. Using a quantitative research design, the findings indicated that the use of GeoGebra had a statistically significant effect on the students’ ability to correctly complete problems regarding some circle geometry theorems. Additionally, using a Likert scored questionnaire, students demonstrated that they valued the use of GeoGebra and appreciated this learning innovation.  Altogether, students who interacted with GeoGebra were highly engaged in the learning processes and actively collaborated with other students rather than remaining passive learners. The students who participated in the study evaluated GeoGebra as an appropriate tool to assist them in the learning of mathematics.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential neuroprotective properties of a novel 5HT1A agonist DU123015 in 2 different models of transient focal ischaemic stroke of varying severities using both in vivo neuroimaging and behavioural techniques as primary outcome measures. For these studies, the NMDA receptor antagonist MK-801 was also utilized as a positive control to further assess the effectiveness of the stroke models and techniques used. RESULTS: In contrast to MK-801, no significant therapeutic effect of DU123015 on lesion volume in either the distal MCAo or intraluminal thread model of stroke was found. MK-801 significantly reduced lesion volume in both models; the mild distal MCAo condition (60 min ischaemia) and the intraluminal thread model, although it had no significant impact upon the lesion size in the severe distal MCAo condition (120 min ischaemia). These therapeutic effects on lesion size were mirrored on a behavioural test for sensory neglect and neurological deficit score in the intraluminal thread model. CONCLUSION: This study highlights the need for a thorough experimental design to test novel neuroprotective compounds in experimental stroke investigations incorporating: a positive reference compound, different models of focal ischaemia, varying the duration of ischaemia, and objective in vivo assessments within a single study. This procedure will help us to minimise the translation of less efficacious compounds

    Tribo-corrosion mechanisms of 316L Stainless Steel in slurries containing common household soft drinks have been studied through investigating the micro-abrasion-corrosion performance using a ball and disk apparatus which has been modified to measure the in-situ corrosion current during the abrasion process. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of pH and solution viscosity on the micro-abrasion-corrosion performance of the material. 316L Stainless Steel was selected because it is commonly used as a dental replacement material. This is an important area of work as the use of steel retainers as well as other stainless steel dental replacements is still widespread and the effectiveness of these devices will be determined by their tribological and tribo-corrosion performance.     A context model for semantic mediation in Web services composition

    This paper presents a context-driven approach that aims at supporting semantic mediation between composed Web services. Despite the widespread adoption of Web services by the IT community, innovative solutions are needed in order to overcome the challenging issue that relates to the semantic disparity of exchanged data. Indeed, there is a lack of means for interpreting these data according to the contextual requirements of each Web service. The context-driven approach suggests two steps. The first step consists of developing a model for anchoring context to data flowing between Web services. In the second step, we use this model to support the semantic mediation between Web services engaged in a composition. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006

    microRNA expression in the aging mouse lung

    BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a novel class of short double stranded RNA that mediate the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. Previous studies have implicated changes in miRNA expression in the regulation of development and the induction of diseases such as cancer. However, although miRNAs have been implicated in the process of aging in C. elegans, nothing is known of their role in mammalian tissues. RESULTS: To address this question, we have used a highly-sensitive, semi-quantitative RT-PCR based approach to measure the expression profile of 256 of the 493 currently identified miRNAs in the lungs from 6 month (adult) and 18 month (aged) old female BALB/c mice. We show that, despite the characteristic changes in anatomy and gene expression associated with lung aging, there were no significant changes in the expression of 256 miRNAs. CONCLUSION: Overall, these results show that miRNA transcription is unchanged during lung aging and suggests that stable expression of miRNAs might instead buffer age related changes in the expression of protein-encoding gene
