A Content Analysis of Institutions of Higher Education\u27s Sexual Assault Policies: Assessing Response to Sexual Assault in Georgia

    Get PDF
Sexual assault is a public health concern that must be systematically addressed. The existence of a comprehensive sexual assault policy and compliance with federal regulations can guide institutions of higher education in responding to and preventing sexual assault on campus. Federal laws hold institutions accountable for providing a safe environment for students. The purpose of this qualitative content analysis was to assess compliance with federal policy and assess the response to sexual assault by IHE in Georgia. Data from the National Center for Education Statistics was utilized to identify Georgia\u27s institutions receiving federal aid during 2018-2019. Using a proportionate stratified random sampling method, publicly available secondary data from 29 institutions were sampled. A content analysis was utilized to identify themes and gaps amongst institutions. NVivo, excel, and a pre-existing coding document were used to analyze and code all documents. The study limited participants to IHE that offered classes on a physical campus in Georgia. Results showed that 79% of sampled institutions published a sexual assault policy. Gaps found across sexual assault policies included variability in reporting options, disciplinary procedures, definitions, and resources. Compliance with federal law varied across institutions, with certificate institutions less likely to comply. The study’s results highlight the variability of sexual assault response and federal law compliance across institutions. Although the results are not generalizable, findings can be used to identify common elements found in policies across institutions in Georgia and can aid in improving response to sexual assault

In recent years, victims’ rights have received worldwide attention in regards to women’s rights and opportunities-or lack thereof. However, what are victims’ rights, how are women’s issues addressed under these rights, have they had their intended effect, are they adequately addressing modern issues, how have similar rights been implemented in other counties and are they working better? This article is a comparative law project between the United States, Portugal, and Pakistan evaluating victims’ rights in each country and any correlation between the presence and enforcement of victims’ rights and the impact they have had on violent crimes against women. By comparing the strengths and weaknesses of victims’ rights legislation, enforcement, and societal attitudes toward women in each country, this paper proposes creating an improved legal framework that combats violence against women

Weird and cosmic short horror fiction and the illustration of existential fears

    Get PDF
The literary genre of horror fiction is uniquely capable of presenting its readers with the horrific, terrifying, and repulsive while remaining an acceptable and sought-after genre. Moreover, the horror genre is also often able to serve as a type of lens through which readers can recognize socio-historical and cultural fears. Within the many subgenres of horror, cosmic and weird horror continue in this ability, but are able to present their readers with more abstract, existential fears. This research is an exploration and analysis of the ability of cosmic and weird horror to reveal the real, personal existential fears of their readers, and why these two subgenres of horror fiction specifically are acceptable and oftentimes desired ways to confront those fears

Investigation of a Magnet Falling Through a Copper Pipe

The goal of this research is to explore the effects of wall thickness and temperature on the rate at which a magnet falls through a copper pipe. A magnet is not attracted to copper. Copper is not magnetic; however, it is a great conductor of electricity. Due to Faraday’s law and Lenz’s law, we know that a changing magnetic flux will produce an electric current that opposes the change in magnetic flux that produced it. These laws together explain why a magnet will fall slowly in a copper pipe even though it is not attracted
