Former intercollegiate athletes\u27 perspectives on career choice: a qualitative study of motivations and challenges in the coaching career path
This is a descriptive study using a qualitative method. It concerns the experiences of former collegiate athletes who chose a career in coaching. Interviews explored (a) motivation of career choice and satisfaction, (b) career challenges, (c) other career areas they explored. This is valuable information for collegiate athletes facing career-related decisions. Many athletic departments do not overtly discuss career options for athletes because of an assumption that doing so diminishes the focus on the current athlete\u27s ambition to make a career of the chosen sport. Yet many athletes will not continue into professional sports, and for those who do, sport careers do not last as long as most careers, due to aging out. Those who choose coaching as a career may find useful career guidance in this research. Coaches should make an effort to discuss with athletes the importance of visiting career counseling or in other ways exploring career options, because even for those who do go into professional sports, the duration of a peak competitive performance in such a career is limited
Survey of Inter-satellite Communication for Small Satellite Systems: Physical Layer to Network Layer View
Small satellite systems enable whole new class of missions for navigation,
communications, remote sensing and scientific research for both civilian and
military purposes. As individual spacecraft are limited by the size, mass and
power constraints, mass-produced small satellites in large constellations or
clusters could be useful in many science missions such as gravity mapping,
tracking of forest fires, finding water resources, etc. Constellation of
satellites provide improved spatial and temporal resolution of the target.
Small satellite constellations contribute innovative applications by replacing
a single asset with several very capable spacecraft which opens the door to new
applications. With increasing levels of autonomy, there will be a need for
remote communication networks to enable communication between spacecraft. These
space based networks will need to configure and maintain dynamic routes, manage
intermediate nodes, and reconfigure themselves to achieve mission objectives.
Hence, inter-satellite communication is a key aspect when satellites fly in
formation. In this paper, we present the various researches being conducted in
the small satellite community for implementing inter-satellite communications
based on the Open System Interconnection (OSI) model. This paper also reviews
the various design parameters applicable to the first three layers of the OSI
model, i.e., physical, data link and network layer. Based on the survey, we
also present a comprehensive list of design parameters useful for achieving
inter-satellite communications for multiple small satellite missions. Specific
topics include proposed solutions for some of the challenges faced by small
satellite systems, enabling operations using a network of small satellites, and

Association of acculturation with cardiac structure and function among Hispanics/Latinos: a cross-sectional analysis of the echocardiographic study of Latinos.
OBJECTIVE:Hispanics/Latinos, the largest immigrant population in the USA, undergo the process of acculturation and have a large burden of heart failure risk. Few studies have examined the association of acculturation on cardiac structure and function. DESIGN:Cross-sectional. SETTING:The Echocardiographic Study of Latinos. PARTICIPANTS:1818 Hispanic adult participants with baseline echocardiographic assessment and acculturation measured by the Short Acculturation Scale, nativity, age at immigration, length of US residence, generational status and language. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES:Echocardiographic assessment of left atrial volume index (LAVI), left ventricular mass index (LVMI), early diastolic transmitral inflow and mitral annular velocities. RESULTS:The study population was predominantly Spanish-speaking and foreign-born with mean residence in the US of 22.7 years, mean age of 56.4 years; 50% had hypertension, 28% had diabetes and 44% had a body mass index >30 kg/m2. Multivariable analyses demonstrated higher LAVI with increasing years of US residence. Foreign-born and first-generation participants had higher E/e' but lower LAVI and e' velocities compared with the second generation. Higher acculturation and income >20K were associated with higher LVMI, LAVI and E/e' but lower e' velocities. Preferential Spanish-speakers with an income <20K had a higher E/e'. CONCLUSIONS:Acculturation was associated with abnormal cardiac structure and function, with some effect modification by socioeconomic status
Dietary protein intake and renal function
Recent trends in weight loss diets have led to a substantial increase in protein intake by individuals. As a result, the safety of habitually consuming dietary protein in excess of recommended intakes has been questioned. In particular, there is concern that high protein intake may promote renal damage by chronically increasing glomerular pressure and hyperfiltration. There is, however, a serious question as to whether there is significant evidence to support this relationship in healthy individuals. In fact, some studies suggest that hyperfiltration, the purported mechanism for renal damage, is a normal adaptative mechanism that occurs in response to several physiological conditions. This paper reviews the available evidence that increased dietary protein intake is a health concern in terms of the potential to initiate or promote renal disease. While protein restriction may be appropriate for treatment of existing kidney disease, we find no significant evidence for a detrimental effect of high protein intakes on kidney function in healthy persons after centuries of a high protein Western diet
Cytokine Profiles of Stimulated Blood Lymphocytes in Asthmatic and Healthy Adolescents Cross the School Year
T cell cytokines play an important role in mediating airway inflammation in asthma. The predominance of a Th2 cytokine profile, particularly interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-5, is associated with the pathogenesis and course of asthma. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that a stressful life event alters the pattern of cytokine release in asthmatic individuals. Thirteen healthy controls and 21 asthmatic adolescents gave blood samples three times over a semester: midsemester, during the week of final examinations, and 2-3 weeks after examinations. Interferon-γ (IFN-γ), IL-2, IL-4, and IL-5 were measured from supernatants of cells stimulated with PHA/PMA for 24 h. Cells from asthmatic subjects released significantly more IL-5 during the examination and postexamination periods, whereas cells from healthy controls released significantly more IL-2 during the midsemester and examination periods, thereby indicating a bias for a Th2-like pattern in asthmatics and a Th 1-like pattern in healthy controls. IL-4 and IL-5 production showed a marked decrease during and after examinations in healthy controls, whereas this decline was absent in asthmatics. The ratios of IFN-γ:IL-4 and IFN-γ:IL-5 also revealed significant changes in the profile of cytokine release across the semester. These results indicate differential cytokine responses in asthmatics that may become pronounced during periods of cellular activation
The Effects of Body-Worn Cameras on Police Activity and Police-Citizen Encounters: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Many have suggested that placing body-worn cameras (BWCs) on police officers improves the civility of police-citizen encounters and enhances citizen perceptions of police transparency and legitimacy. In response, many police departments have adopted this technology to address public concerns over the quality of policing in their communities. The existing program evaluation evidence on the intended and unintended consequences of outfitting police officers with BWCs is still developing, however. This study reports the findings of a randomized controlled trial involving more than 400 police officers in Las Vegas, Nevada. We find that officers equipped with body-worn cameras generated fewer complaints and use of force reports relative to officers without cameras. BWC officers also made more arrests and issued more citations than their non-BWC counterparts. The findings of this randomized controlled trial raise the possibility that planning for the placement of BWCs on officers should consider the competing effects of improvement in civilian perceptions of police generated by reductions in complaints and use of force incidents and of public concerns about increased enforcement activity
Gender impacts the post-exercise substrate and endocrine response in trained runners
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Although several studies have investigated gender differences in the substrate and endocrine responses during and following endurance exercise, few have studied sex differences during a more prolonged recovery period post endurance exercise. The purpose of this study was to compare and characterize the endocrine and substrate profiles of trained male and female adult runners during the three-and-a-half hour recovery period from an endurance run.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>After consuming a euenergetic diet (1.8 g·kg<sup>-1</sup>·d<sup>-1 </sup>protein, 26% fat, 58% carbohydrates, 42.8 ± 1.2 kcal/kg body weight) for 8 days, blood was collected from trained male (n = 6, 21 yrs, 70 kg, 180 cm, 9% body fat, VO<sub>2peak </sub>78.0 ± 3.4 mL·kg FFM<sup>-1</sup>·min<sup>-1</sup>) and female (n = 6, 23 y, 66 kg, 170 cm, 29% body fat, VO<sub>2peak </sub>71.6 ± 4.5 mL·kg FFM<sup>-1</sup>·min<sup>-1</sup>) endurance runners at rest and during recovery from a 75 min run at 70% VO<sub>2peak</sub>. Circulating levels of glucose, lactate, free fatty acids (FFAs), insulin, cortisol, growth hormone (GH), and free insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) were measured.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>During the recovery period, females experienced increases in glucose, lactate and insulin while no changes were noted in men (<it>P </it>< 0.05). Males experienced increases in GH and decreases in IGF-I levels respectively (<it>P </it>< 0.05) while no changes were observed in females. FFA levels increased during recovery from endurance exercise, but changes were not different between genders.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These data further document gender differences in substrate and endocrine changes during a prolonged recovery period following endurance exercise. Future studies are needed to evaluate the effect of differing diets and nutritional supplements on these gender-specific post-exercise substrate and endocrine differences.</p
Stratospheric processes: Observations and interpretation
Explaining the observed ozone trends discussed in an earlier update and predicting future trends requires an understanding of the stratospheric processes that affect ozone. Stratospheric processes occur on both large and small spatial scales and over both long and short periods of time. Because these diverse processes interact with each other, only in rare cases can individual processes be studied by direct observation. Generally the cause and effect relationships for ozone changes were established by comparisons between observations and model simulations. Increasingly, these comparisons rely on the developing, observed relationships among trace gases and dynamical quantities to initialize and constrain the simulations. The goal of this discussion of stratospheric processes is to describe the causes for the observed ozone trends as they are currently understood. At present, we understand with considerable confidence the stratospheric processes responsible for the Antarctic ozone hole but are only beginning to understand the causes of the ozone trends at middle latitudes. Even though the causes of the ozone trends at middle latitudes were not clearly determined, it is likely that they, just as those over Antarctica, involved chlorine and bromine chemistry that was enhanced by heterogeneous processes. This discussion generally presents only an update of the observations that have occurred for stratospheric processes since the last assessment (World Meteorological Organization (WMO), 1990), and is not a complete review of all the new information about stratospheric processes. It begins with an update of the previous assessment of polar stratospheres (WMO, 1990), followed by a discussion on the possible causes for the ozone trends at middle latitudes and on the effects of bromine and of volcanoes
Spitzer observations of HH54 and HH7-11: mapping the H2 ortho-to-para ratio in shocked molecular gas
We report the results of spectroscopic mapping observations carried out
toward the Herbig-Haro objects HH7-11 and HH54 over the 5.2 - 37 micron region
using the Infrared Spectrograph of the Spitzer Space Telescope. These
observations have led to the detection and mapping of the S(0) - S(7) pure
rotational lines of molecular hydrogen, together with emissions in fine
structure transitions of Ne+, Si+, S, and Fe+. The H2 rotational emissions
indicate the presence of warm gas with a mixture of temperatures in the range
400 - 1200 K, consistent with the expected temperature behind nondissociative
shocks of velocity ~ 10 - 20 km/s, while the fine structure emissions originate
in faster shocks of velocity 35 - 90 km/s that are dissociative and ionizing.
Maps of the H2 line ratios reveal little spatial variation in the typical
admixture of gas temperatures in the mapped regions, but show that the H2
ortho-to-para ratio is quite variable, typically falling substantially below
the equilibrium value of 3 attained at the measured gas temperatures. The
non-equilibrium ortho-to-para ratios are characteristic of temperatures as low
as ~ 50 K, and are a remnant of an earlier epoch, before the gas temperature
was elevated by the passage of a shock. Correlations between the gas
temperature and H2 ortho-to-para ratio show that ortho-to-para ratios < 0.8 are
attained only at gas temperatures below ~ 900 K; this behavior is consistent
with theoretical models in which the conversion of para- to ortho-H2 behind the
shock is driven by reactive collisions with atomic hydrogen, a process which
possesses a substantial activation energy barrier (E_A/k ~ 4000 K) and is
