Uncovering design topics by visualizing and interpreting keyword data
This paper describes a bibliometric keyword analysis from the international DESIGN conference. We combined related
keywords to form DESIGN topics. After that, we visualized the connections between the topics. Our analysis shows that the web of science database does not contain the DESIGN 2012-14 proceedings. That is relevant for the conference organizers, because content visibility is important. The topic visualization benefits both contributors to and organizers of the international
DESIGN conference, because it shows trending topics and indicates areas with room for improvement

Identification of a positive-Seebeck-coefficient exohedral fullerene
If fullerene-based thermoelectricity is to become a viable technology, then fullerenes exhibiting both positive and negative Seebeck coefficients are needed. C60 is known to have a negative Seebeck coefficient and therefore in this paper we address the challenge of identifying a positive-Seebeck-coefficient fullerene. We investigated the thermoelectric properties of single-molecule junctions of the exohedral fullerene C50Cl10 connected to gold electrodes and found that it indeed possesses a positive Seebeck coefficient. Furthermore, in common with C60, the Seebeck coefficient can be increased by placing more than one C50Cl10 in series. For a single C50Cl10, we find S = +8 μV K−1 and for two C50Cl10's in series we find S = +30 μV K−1. We also find that the C50Cl10 monomer and dimer have power factors of 0.5 × 10−5 W m−1 K−2 and 6.0 × 10−5 W m−1 K−2 respectively. These results demonstrate that exohedral fullerenes provide a new class of thermoelectric materials with desirable properties, which complement those of all-carbon fullerenes, thereby enabling the boosting of the thermovoltage in all-fullerene tandem structures
A novel multiplex assay for simultaneously analysing 13 rapidly mutating Y-STRs
A multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay (RM-Yplex) was developed which is capable of simultaneously amplifying 13 recently introduced rapidly mutating Y-STR markers (RM Y-STRs). This multiplex assay is expected to aid human identity testing in forensic and other applications to improve differentiating unrelated males and allow separating related males. The 13 RM Y-STR markers included in the multiplex are: DYF387S1, DYF399S1, DYF403S1ab, DYF404S1, DYS449, DYS518, DYS526ab, DYS547, DYS570, DYS576, DYS612, DYS626 and DYS627. This study reflects the proof of concept to analyse all currently known RM Y-STRs simultaneously and describes the optimization of the multiplex assay. The RM-Yplex assay generated complete RM Y-STR profiles down to 62.5 pg of male template DNA, and from male–female DNA mixtures at all ratios tested. We herewith introduce and make available for widespread use in forensic and anthropological studies, an effective and sensitive single multiplex assay for simultaneous genotyping of 13 RM Y-STRs

RecA and DNA recombination: a review of molecular mechanisms
International audienceRecombinases are responsible for homologous recombination and maintenance of genome integrity. In Escherichia coli, the recombinase RecA forms a nucleoprotein filament with the ssDNA present at a DNA break and searches for a homologous dsDNA to use as a template for break repair. During the first step of this process, the ssDNA is bound to RecA and stretched into a Watson-Crick base-paired triplet conformation. The RecA nucleoprotein filament also contains ATP and Mg 2+ , two cofactors required for RecA activity. Then, the complex starts a homology search by interacting with and stretching dsDNA. Thanks to supercoiling, intersegment sampling and RecA clustering, a genome-wide homology search takes place at a relevant metabolic timescale. When a region of homology 8 to 20 base pairs in length is found and stabilized, DNA strand exchange proceeds, forming a heteroduplex complex that is resolved through a combination of DNA synthesis, ligation and resolution. RecA activities can take place without ATP hydrolysis, but this latter activity is necessary to improve and accelerate the process. Protein flexibility and monomer-monomer interactions are fundamental for RecA activity, which functions cooperatively. A structure/function relationship analysis suggests that the recombinogenic activity can be improved and that recombinases have an inherently large recombination potential. Understanding this relationship is essential for designing RecA derivatives with enhanced activity for biotechnology applications. For example, this protein is a major actor in the recombinase polymerase isothermal amplification (RPA) used in point-of-care diagnostics
Support for UNRWA's survival
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) provides life-saving humanitarian aid for 5·4 million Palestine refugees now entering their eighth decade of statelessness and conflict. About a third of Palestine refugees still live in 58 recognised camps. UNRWA operates 702 schools and 144 health centres, some of which are affected by the ongoing humanitarian disasters in Syria and the Gaza Strip. It has dramatically reduced the prevalence of infectious diseases, mortality, and illiteracy. Its social services include rebuilding infrastructure and homes that have been destroyed by conflict and providing cash assistance and micro-finance loans for Palestinians whose rights are curtailed and who are denied the right of return to their homeland
