Some Practical Applications of Paper Electrophoresis.
Due to the increased interest in electrophoresis as a clinical tool for diagnosis , it seems evident that an attempt should be made to obtain equipment for use in the small hospital. The cost of commercially produced equipment prohibits the use of the electrophoretic procedure in the small hospital unless some method employing the basic theories can be found at lower cost. This paper attempts to show how a small hospital will have the essentials f or this procedure at a cost of one-tenth of the commercially produced equipment. The completed electrophoretic patterns may then be sent to a larger hospital which may have an 11 An.alytrol11 or some other densitometer for obtaining the percentage of the serum albumin and globulins. The graphs can then be interpreted and sent back to the small hospital for diagnosis. During the summer of 1956 the writer observed the equipment in use at the Naval Medical Hospital , Bethesda, Maryland. The results of the equipment there were compared to the results of this present investigation. The separation obtained at Hays corresponded so closely to that at the naval Hospital, that the results of this investigation may be considered valid. The present investigation was conducted at the St. Anthony Hospital at Hays , Kansas. It was designed to check the relative accuracy of an improvised instrument with an expensive commercial model, and to verify the use of such an instrument as a diagnostic tool
A Pump Monitoring Approach to Irrigation Pumping Plant Performance Testing
Traditionally, irrigation pumping plants have been tested using an instantaneous appraoch, which tests performance parameters over a very short time interval. Using this method, the tester measures the necessary work and energy use parameters to calculate the desired pumping plant performance values. The primary limitation of this approach is its inability to determine the season long efficiency of an irrigation pumping plant.
A new approach to evaluating irrigation pumping plant performance is the use of pump monitoring systems which use high frequency, real-time data collection and telemetry to relay information directly from the pump to the user. This method of testing essentially conducts a continuous pumping plant performance evaluation.
Throughout a typical irrigation season, a single pumping plant typically operates at a wide range of total dynamic heads as a result of changes in operational conditions due to factors such as aquifer drawdown and irrigation demand changes. When coupled with telemetry, this approach to irrigation pumping plant testing can provide real-time feedback to the irrigator on pumping plant performance, even as the operating conditions of the system changes throughout the season.
Nearly 100 pumping years of diesel and electric pumping plant data was evaluated over four irrigation seasons using a network of these pump monitoring systems. Annual averages and trends in water pumping flow rate, cost of water per unit volume pumped, and efficiency as a percentage of the Nebraska Pumping Plant Performance Criteria, among other performance values were reported. These pumping performance values can be used to develop recommendations to producers in order to improve pumping plant performance and reduce operating costs as well as identifying the causes of pumping plant inefficiencies

Narrativization of the global financial crisis by the Japanese press
The Global Financial Crisis of 2007 â 2008, culminating in the Lehman Shock on 15th
September 2008, has been described as both a âonce in a century eventâ and a âseismic shiftâ
in global economics. Yet despite the exogenous nature of the crisis, it was Japan which felt
the greatest impact to its economy. Public understanding and perception of such crises is
highly dependent upon news coverage for their dissemination, opinion, and interpretation
of unfolding events. However, in doing so, the news media are positioned as powerful
gatekeepers dictating how events become populated with meaning and understood within
the public consciousness. This is of particular concern to Japan where the kisha club system
of journalism has been widely criticised for the cartelisation of information and the
homogenization of news coverage. A common methodology to investigate this phenomenon
within the field of Communication Research is Media Framing, however this has rarely been
applied to non-Western primary sources. Likewise, despite the multidisciplinary nature of
Japanese Studies, theories of Communication Research have not been widely used. I address
these concerns through a joint quantitative and qualitative analysis of the Yomiuri Shimbun,
Asahi Shimbun and Nikkei Shimbun over the two-year period following the Lehman Shock,
employing Media Frame and Discourse Analysis methodologies. In doing so, I identify not
only the narratives employed by the âbig threeâ newspapers of Japan, but also how the
metaphor of the Lehman Shock crystalized over time, ready to be applied to subsequent
economic crises

Geology and geophysics of the foreland fold-thrust belt of northwestern Pakistan
Himalayan collision produced frontal and lateral
ramps and associated Pliocene to Quaternary tectonic
geomorphic features in the foreland fold-thrust belt of
northwestern Pakistan. The transpressional right-lateral
Kalabagh tear fault zone displaced the emergent Surghar
Range frontal thrust from the western Salt Range by 16-19
km since 1.9-2.1 Ma: the age of youngest Siwalik molasse
strata erosionally truncated during the southward advance
of decollement thrusting. Folds and fanglomerate
deposits resulting from decollement thrusting were also
cut by the Kalabagh fault. North of the eastern Surghar
Range, the N15W-trending Kalabagh fault bends to the west
into north-dipping thrust faults that sole out beneath
the southern Kohat Plateau. Foreland subsidence
associated with the southward advance of thrusting
controlled the distribution of Indus River conglomerates
during the late Pliocene and Quaternary. Uplift in the
northern Kalabagh fault zone diverted the Indus river
eastward to its present course.
South of the Main Boundary thrust (MBT) and west of
the Indus River, decollement thrusting dominated by
layer-parallel slip of as much as 32 km on a single
thrust fault emplaced blind thrust sheets and fault-bend
folds. Balanced cross sections show over 50% line-length
shortening in sedimentary strata between the top of the
basement and the base of the elastic wedge of the Murree
and Kamlial formations and the Siwalik Group. A NNWtrending
basement ridge modeled from Bouguer gravity data
may have nucleated the similarly-oriented Kalabagh fault
lateral ramp along the western Salt Range. A basement
fault may have produced the frontal ramp at the Surghar
Range. Low friction along the basal decollement thrust,
with rapid underthrusting and internal thickening,
produced a subcritical wedge tapering approximately 2°
across the 70-km-wide Kohat foreland fold-thrust belt
between the MBT and the Surghar Range thrust
The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community online: discussions of bullying and self-disclosure in YouTube videos
Computer-mediated communication has become a popular platform for identity construction and experimentation as well as social interaction for those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). The creation of user-generated videos has allowed content creators to share experiences on LGBT topics. With bullying becoming more common amongst LGBT youth, it is important to obtain a greater understanding of this phenomenon. In our study, we report on the analysis of 151 YouTube videos which were identified as having LGBT- and bullying-related content. The analysis reveals how content creators openly disclose personal information about themselves and their experiences in a non-anonymous rhetoric with an unknown public. These disclosures could indicate a desire to seek friendship, support and provide empathy
Tissues and industrial co-products formed during alginate extraction from Laminaria hyperborea provide different metabolite profiles depending on harvest season
The metabolic profiles of different tissues and industrially relevant co-products of alginate extraction from Laminaria hyperborea samples harvested in different seasons were assessed using Hydrophilic Interaction Liquid Chromatography â Mass Spectrometry (HILIC-MS). Positive and negative mode MS data, predicted exact mass data and matching with database and literature searches, allowed the putative identification of 57 major metabolites. The metabolites ranged from known and abundant components (e.g., iodide, mannitol, and various betaines) to components not previously noted in this species and 11 major components which could not be identified. The levels of these components varied between tissues and co-products with some metabolites seemingly specific to certain samples. The components also varied between winter and summer harvested material, perhaps reflecting seasonality in their biosynthesis and accumulation in the tissues and co-products. The approach applied in this work could assess when components of potential specific commercial interest were maximally accumulated and help plan the most efficient exploitation of the harvested biomass. It could also be used to define variation in components in L. hyperborea from different locations or potential biotopes of this species. This initial work extends our ability to understand the phenotype of seaweeds whilst also identifying new components and new commercial opportunities
