An evaluation of the one percent clustered sample of the 1990 Census of China
We describe and evaluate a one percent clustered sample of the 1990 Census of China, the largest publicly-available micro sample of any Chinese census, using direct inspection as well as comparisons with published data drawn from the complete enumeration. In the absence of official documentation, we elucidate the basis of the clustering; detect duplicate cases; report corrected totals; and make comparisons between the sample data and tabulations based on the complete enumeration at the province and county levels. The State argues for either excluding the alleged confession of Richard Eberling as testified to by Robert Parks or, in the alternative, for a hearing to determine admissibility, because the statements do not meet the hearsay exception under Ohio R. Evid. 804(B)(3) allowing for statements made against the interest of the declarant. The State argues that the second element, which requires the statement to be against the penal interests of the declarant, was not satisfied, because the declarant was already serving multiple consecutive sentences in prison, ensuring that he would die in jail before his scheduled release. The State further contends that the third element, which requires corroborating circumstances to indicate the statement\u27s trustworthiness, is not met, because the circumstances show that not only did Eberling previously fail to make any confession when given ample opportunity, but also there exists other evidence that Eberling was not telling the truth
Integration of technologies for understanding the functional relationship between reef habitat and fish growth and production
Functional linkage between reef habitat quality and fish growth and production has remained elusive. Most current research is focused on correlative relationships between a general habitat type and presence/absence of a species,
an index of species abundance, or species diversity. Such descriptive information largely ignores how reef attributes
regulate reef fish abundance (density-dependent habitat selection), trophic interactions, and physiological performance (growth and condition). To determine the
functional relationship between habitat quality, fish abundance, trophic interactions, and physiological performance, we are using an experimental reef system in
the northeastern Gulf of Mexico where we apply advanced sensor and biochemical technologies. Our study site controls for reef attributes (size, cavity space, and reef
mosaics) and focuses on the processes that regulate gag grouper (Mycteroperca microlepis) abundance, behavior and performance (growth and condition), and the availability of their pelagic prey. We combine mobile and fixed-active (fisheries) acoustics, passive acoustics, video cameras,
and advanced biochemical techniques. Fisheries acoustics quantifies the abundance of pelagic prey fishes associated
with the reefs and their behavior. Passive acoustics and video allow direct observation of gag and prey fish behavior and the acoustic environment, and provide a
direct visual for the interpretation of fixed fisheries acoustics measurements. New application of biochemical techniques, such as Electron Transport System (ETS) assay,
allow the in situ measurement of metabolic expenditure of gag and relates this back to reef attributes, gag behavior, and prey fish availability. Here, we provide an overview of our integrated technological approach for understanding and quantifying the functional relationship between reef habitat quality and one element of production – gag grouper growth on shallow coastal reefs

Know the Star, Know the Planet. III. Discovery of Late-Type Companions to Two Exoplanet Host Stars
We discuss two multiple star systems that host known exoplanets: HD 2638 and
30 Ari B. Adaptive optics imagery revealed an additional stellar companion to
both stars. We collected multi-epoch images of the systems with Robo-AO and the
PALM-3000 adaptive optics systems at Palomar Observatory and provide relative
photometry and astrometry. The astrometry indicates that the companions share
common proper motion with their respective primaries. Both of the new
companions have projected separations less than 30 AU from the exoplanet host
star. Using the projected separations to compute orbital periods of the new
stellar companions, HD 2638 has a period of 130 yrs and 30 Ari B has a period
of 80 years. Previous studies have shown that the true period is most likely
within a factor of three of these estimated values. The additional component to
the 30 Ari makes it the second confirmed quadruple system known to host an
exoplanet. HD 2638 hosts a hot Jupiter and the discovery of a new companion
strengthens the connection between hot Jupiters and binary stars. We place the
systems on a color-magnitude diagram and derive masses for the companions which

The Antiferromagnetic Band Structure of La2CuO4 Revisited
Using the Becke-3-LYP functional, we have performed band structure
calculations on the high temperature superconductor parent compound, La2CuO4.
Under the restricted spin formalism (rho(alpha) equal to rho(beta)), the
R-B3LYP band structure agrees well with the standard LDA band structure. It is
metallic with a single Cu x2-y2/O p(sigma) band crossing the Fermi level. Under
the unrestricted spin formalism (rho(alpha) not equal to rho(beta)), the UB3LYP
band structure has a spin polarized antiferromagnetic solution with a band gap
of 2.0 eV, agreeing well with experiment. This state is 1.0 eV (per formula
unit) lower than that calculated from the R-B3LYP. The apparent high energy of
the spin restricted state is attributed to an overestimate of on-site Coulomb
repulsion which is corrected in the unrestricted spin calculations. The
stabilization of the total energy with spin polarization arises primarily from
the stabilization of the x2-y2 band, such that the character of the eigenstates
at the top of the valence band in the antiferromagnetic state becomes a strong
mixture of Cu x2-y2/O p(sigma) and Cu z2/O' p(z). Since the Hohenberg-Kohn
theorem requires the spin restricted and spin unrestricted calculations give
exactly the same ground state energy and total density for the exact
functionals, this large disparity in energy reflects the inadequacy of current
functionals for describing the cuprates. This calls into question the use of
band structures based on current restricted spin density functionals (including
LDA) as a basis for single band theories of superconductivity in these

Phosphofructokinase 1 Glycosylation Regulates Cell Growth and Metabolism
Cancer cells must satisfy the metabolic demands of rapid cell growth within a continually changing microenvironment. We demonstrated that the dynamic posttranslational modification of proteins by O-linked β-N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAcylation) is a key metabolic regulator of glucose metabolism. O-GlcNAcylation was induced at serine 529 of phosphofructokinase 1 (PFK1) in response to hypoxia. Glycosylation inhibited PFK1 activity and redirected glucose flux through the pentose phosphate pathway, thereby conferring a selective growth advantage on cancer cells. Blocking glycosylation of PFK1 at serine 529 reduced cancer cell proliferation in vitro and impaired tumor formation in vivo. These studies reveal a previously uncharacterized mechanism for the regulation of metabolic pathways in cancer and a possible target for therapeutic intervention
