    Worldwide, fatal traffic injuries and drowning deaths are important problems. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the cirumstances of fatal and non-fatal traffic injuries and drowning deaths in Sweden including analysis of the presence of alcohol and drugs, which are considered to be major risk factors for these events. Data where obtained from the database of National Board of Forensic Medicine. In the first study, we investigated 420 passenger deaths from 372 crashes during 1993-1996. There were 594 drivers involved. In total, 21% of the drivers at fault were alcohol positive compared to 2% of drivers not at fault (p<0.001) (Paper I). During 2004-2007, crashes involving 56 fatally and 144 non-fatally injured drivers were investigated in a prospective study from Northern Sweden (Paper II). The drivers were alcohol positive in 38% and 21%, respectively. Psychoactive drugs were found in 7% and 13%, respectively. Benzodiazepines, opiates and antidepressants were the most frequent drugs found in drivers. Illict drugs were found 9% and 4% respectively, with tetrahydrocannabinol being the most frequent of these drugs (Paper II). We investigated 5,125 drowning deaths in Sweden during 1992-2009 (Paper III). The incidence decreased on average by about 2% each year (p<0.001). Unintentional drowning was most common (50%). Alcohol was found in 44% of unintentional, 24% of intentional, and 45% of undetermined drowning deaths. Psychoactive substances were detected in 40% and benzodiazepines were the most common substance. Illicit drugs were detected in 10%. Of all drowning deaths, a significantly higher proportion females commited suicide compared with males (55% vs. 21%, p<0.001). Suicidal drowning deaths (n=129) in Northern Sweden were studied further in detail (Paper IV). of these, 53% had been hospitalized due to a psychiatric diagnosis within five years prior to the suicide. Affective and psychotic disorders were the most common psychiatric diagnoses. Almost one third had performed a previous suicide attempt. One fourth had committed suicide after less than one week of discharge from hospital. Alochol was found in 16% and psychoactive drugs in 62% of these cases, respectively.  In conclusion, alcohol and psychoactive drugs are commonly detected among injured drivers and drowning victims, and probably play a role in these events. Most of the individuals that tested positive for alcohol and high blood concentrations, indicating alochol dependence or abuse. This association warrants futher attention when planning future prevention.

    A theoretical comparison of the near-optimum design and predicted performance of n/p and p/n indium phosphide homojunction solar cells

    Using a detailed simulation model of p(+)nn(+) and n(+)pp(+) indium phosphide (InP) homojunction solar cells, extensive parametric variation computer simulation runs were performed to aid in making near-optimum designs for these two solar cell configurations. The values of all the geometrical and material parameters corresponding to the near-optimal designs of both these configurations are presented. The results of parametric variation runs are presented for each configuration showing how the performance parameters J(sub sc), V(sub oc), and eta vary with each of the cell design parameters for the near-optimally designed cell. Finally, the theoretically obtained results are discussed, and the relative merits and drawbacks of the two configurations are compared

    Key factors limiting the open circuit voltage of n(+)pp(+) indium phosphide solar cells

    Solar cells made from gallium arsenide (GaAs), with a room temperature bandgap of E(sub g) = 1.43 eV have exhibited the best measured open circuit voltage (V sub OC) of 1.05 V at 1 AMO, 25 C. The material InP is in many ways similar to GaAs. A simple calculation comparing InP to GaAs then shows that solar cells made from InP, with E(sub g) = 1.35 at 300 K, should exhibit the best measured (V sub OC) of approximately 950 mV at 1 AMO, 300 K. However, to date, the best measured V(sub OC) for InP solar cells made by any fabrication method is 899 mV at AM1.5, 25 C which would translate to 912 mV at 1 AMO, 25 C. The V(sub OC) of an n(+)pp(+) InP solar cell is governed by several factors. Of these, some factors, such as the thickness and doping of the emitter and base regions, are easily controlled and can be adjusted to desired values dictated by a good performance optimizing model. Such factors were not considered. There are other factors which also govern V(sub OC), and their values are not so easily controlled. The primary ones among these are (1) the indirect or Hall-Shockley-Read lifetimes in the various regions of the cell, (2) the low-doping intrinsic carrier concentration n(sub i) of the InP material, (3) the heavy doping factors in the emitter and BSF regions, and (4) the front surface recombination velocity S(sub F). The influence of these latter factors on the V(sub OC) of the n(+)pp(+) InP solar cell and the results were used to produce a near-optimum design of the n(+)pp(+) InP solar cell

Senior thesis, Kansas State Agricultural College, 1906.Morse Department of Special CollectionsIntroduction: It was not until recent years that the single phase alternating current motor assumed much importance and only very recently that it was found to possess a certain adaptability to traction; on account of the simplicity of the design and the great amount of speed regulation that one can obtain. With the rapid development of the applications of electricity, alternating current motors were required for railway and similar work which had a high-starting torque efficiency and a high efficiency which extended over a great range of speed, that is, one which had a speed torque characteristic similar to that of the direct current series motor. The characteristic of an alternating current induction motor is that of a constant speed motor but by the introduction of a commutator almost any speed torque characteristic can be produced. It is evident, then, that we refer only to the commutator type; as the induction motor without commutator has not as yet been found suitable for traction work. In its general form the alternating current motor consists of one or more stationary electrical circuits magnetically related to one or more rotating electric circuits. These circuits may be excited by to one or more rotating electric circuits. These circuits may be excited by alternating current or some by alternating current and some by direct. Before taking up in general the theory of the single phase induction motor, it might be well to give the classes and types into which alternating current motors may be subdivided
