On the Improvement of Cellular Coverage Maps by Filtering MDT Measurements
In cellular systems, network re-planning aims to update network configuration to cope with permanent changes in the environment. In this task, terminal measurements are often used to calibrate performance models integrated in radio network planning tools. In Release 10 of the 3GPP standard, the Minimization of Drive Test (MDT) feature allows the collection
of user position correlated to performance statistics or radio events. In practice, positioning errors severely limit the potential
of MDT measurements. In this work, a preliminary analysis of a large MDT dataset taken from a commercial Long-Term
Evolution (LTE) network shows for the first time several sources of positioning errors not previously reported in the literature.
Then, a heuristic filtering algorithm is proposed to discard samples with inaccurate location data. Method assessment is
done by checking the impact of filtering on the coverage map built with a real MDT dataset. Results show that the proposed
method significantly improves the accuracy of coverage maps by filtering unreliable measurements.European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under the Project H2020 LOCUS under (Grant 871249
Standards – An important step for the (public) use of lidars
Lidar standards are needed to ensure quality and lidar product control at the interface between lidar manufacturers and lidar users. Meanwhile three lidar standards have been published by German and international standardization organizations. This paper describes the cooperation between the lidar technique inventors, lidar instrument constructors, and lidar product users to establish useful standards. Presently a backscatter lidar standard is elaborated in Germany. Key points of this standard are presented here. Two German standards were already accepted as international standards by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Hence, German and international organizations for the establishment of lidar standards are introduced to encourage a cooperative work on lidar standards by lidar scientists
Scientific Opportunities with an X-ray Free-Electron Laser Oscillator
An X-ray free-electron laser oscillator (XFELO) is a new type of hard X-ray
source that would produce fully coherent pulses with meV bandwidth and stable
intensity. The XFELO complements existing sources based on self-amplified
spontaneous emission (SASE) from high-gain X-ray free-electron lasers (XFEL)
that produce ultra-short pulses with broad-band chaotic spectra. This report is
based on discussions of scientific opportunities enabled by an XFELO during a
workshop held at SLAC on June 29 - July 1, 2016Comment: 21 pages, 12 figure
Lasing in cuprous iodide microwires
We report on the observation of lasing in cuprous iodide (CuI) microwires. A vapor-phase transport
growth procedure was used to synthesize CuI microwires with low defect concentration. The crystal
structure of single microwires was determined to be of zincblende-type. The high optical quality of
single microwires is indicated by the observed series of excitonic emission lines as well as by the formation
of gain under optical excitation. Lasing of triangular whispering-gallery modes in single
microwires is demonstrated for fs- and ns-excitation from cryogenic temperatures up to 200 K. Timeresolved
micro-photoluminescence studies reveal the dynamics of the laser process on the time scale
of several picoseconds
