Simple chamber facilitates chemiluminescent detection of bacteria
Test chamber enables rapid estimation of bacteria in a test sample through the reaction of luminol and an oxidant with the cytochrome C portion of certain species of bacteria. Intensity of the light emitted in the reaction is a function of the specific bacteria in the test sample
Processing of combined domestic bath and laundry waste waters for reuse as commode flushing water
An experimental investigation of processes and system configurations for reclaiming combined bath and laundry waste waters for reuse as commode flush water was conducted. A 90-min recycle flow was effective in removing particulates and in improving other physical characteristics to the extent that the filtered water was subjectively acceptable for reuse. The addition of a charcoal filter resulted in noticeable improvements in color, turbidity, and suds elimination. Heating and chlorination of the waste waters were investigated for reducing total organism counts and eliminating coliform organisms. A temperature of 335.9 K (145 F) for 30 min and chlorine concentrations of 20 mg/l in the collection tank followed by 10 mg/l in the storage tank were determined to be adequate for this purpose. Water volume relationships and energy-use rates for the waste water reuse systems are also discussed
The chemical/physical and microbiological characteristics of typical bath and laundry waste waters
Chemical/physical and microbiological characteristics are studied of typical bath and laundry waters collected during a 12 day test in which the untreated waste waters were reused for toilet flush. Most significant changes were found for ammonia, color, methylene blue active substances, phosphates, sodium, sulfates, total organic carbon, total solids, and turbidity in comparison with tap water baseline. The mean total number of microorganisms detected in the waste waters ranged from 1 million to 10 to the 7th power cells/m1 and the mean number of possible coliforms ranged from 10 to the 5th power to 1 million. An accumulation of particulates and an objectible odor were detected in the tankage used during the 12 day reuse of the untreated waste waters. The combined bath and laundry waste waters from a family of four provided 91 percent of the toilet flush water for the same family
Pair tunneling through single molecules
By a polaronic energy shift, the effective charging energy of molecules can
become negative, favoring ground states with even numbers of electrons. Here,
we show that charge transport through such molecules near ground-state
degeneracies is dominated by tunneling of electron pairs which coexists with
(featureless) single-electron cotunneling. Due to the restricted phase space
for pair tunneling, the current-voltage characteristics exhibits striking
differences from the conventional Coulomb blockade. In asymmetric junctions,
pair tunneling can be used for gate-controlled current rectification and

Life inside black holes
We consider test planet and photon orbits of the third kind inside a black
hole, which are stable, periodic and neither come out of the black hole nor
terminate at the singularity. Interiors of supermassive black holes may be
inhabited by advanced civilizations living on planets with the third-kind
orbits. In principle, one can get information from the interiors of black holes

The Closest Look at 1H0707-495: X-ray Reverberation Lags with 1.3 Ms of Data
Reverberation lags in AGN were first discovered in the NLS1 galaxy,
1H0707-495. We present a follow-up analysis using 1.3 Ms of data, which allows
for the closest ever look at the reverberation signature of this remarkable
source. We confirm previous findings of a hard lag of ~100 seconds at
frequencies v ~ [0.5 - 4] e-4 Hz, and a soft lag of ~30 seconds at higher
frequencies, v ~ [0.6 - 3] e-3 Hz. These two frequency domains clearly show
different energy dependences in their lag spectra. We also find evidence for a
signature from the broad Fe K line in the high frequency lag spectrum. We use
Monte Carlo simulations to show how the lag and coherence measurements respond
to the addition of Poisson noise and to dilution by other components. With our
better understanding of these effects on the lag, we show that the lag-energy
spectra can be modelled with a scenario in which low frequency hard lags are
produced by a compact corona responding to accretion rate fluctuations
propagating through an optically thick accretion disc, and the high frequency
soft lags are produced by short light-travel delay associated with reflection

In cond-mat/0002074 Ricci-Tersenghi et al. find two linear regimes in the
fluctuation-dissipation relation between density-density correlations and
associated responses of the Frustrated Ising Lattice Gas. Here we show that
this result does not seem to correspond to the equilibrium quantities of the
model, by measuring the overlap distribution P(q) of the density and comparing
the FDR expected on the ground of the P(q) with the one measured in the

Multi-k magnetic structures in USb_{0.9}Te_{0.1} and UAs_{0.8}Se_{0.2} observed via resonant x-ray scattering at the U M4 edge
Experiments with resonant photons at the U M4 edge have been performed on a
sample of USb_{0.9}Te_{0.1}, which has an incommensurate magnetic structure
with k = 0.596(2) reciprocal lattice units. The reflections of the form ,
as observed previously in a commensurate k = 1/2 system [N. Bernhoeft et al.,
Phys. Rev. B 69 174415 (2004)] are observed, removing any doubt that these
occur because of multiple scattering or high-order contamination of the
incident photon beam. They are clearly connected with the presence of a 3k
configuration. Measurements of the reflections from the sample
UAs_{0.8}Se_{0.2} in a magnetic field show that the transition at T* ~ 50 K is
between a low-temperature 2k and high-temperature 3k state and that this
transition is sensitive to an applied magnetic field. These experiments stress
the need for quantitative theory to explain the intensities of these

Band-overlap metallization of BaS, BaSe and BaTe
The insulator-metal transition volumes for BaS, BaSe, and BaTe are calculated for the first time, using the self-consistent augmented spherical wave technique. The metallized transition volumes are smaller than those corresponding to the NaCl yields CsCl structural transitions, but, 10 to 15% larger than those obtained by the Herzfeld dielectric theory. The calculated equilibrium energy gaps in the NaCl structure underestimate the measured ones by 50 to 60%
Enhanced Retention In The Passive-Avoidance Task By 5-HT1A Receptor Blockade Is Not Associated With Increased Activity Of The Central Nucleus Of The Amygdala
The effect of blockade of S-HT1A receptors was investigated on (1) retention in a mildly aversive passive-avoidance task, and (2) spontaneous single-unit activity of central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) neurons, a brain site implicated in modulation of retention. Systemic administration of the selective S-HT1A antagonist NAN-190 immediately after training markedly-and dose-dependently-facilitated retention in the passive-avoidance task; enhanced retention was time-dependent and was not attributable to variations in wattages of shock received by animals. Systemic administration of NAN-190 had mixed effects on spontaneous single-unit activity of CeA neurons recorded extracellularly in vivo; microiontophoretic application of S-HT, in contrast, consistently and potently suppressed CeA activity. The present findings-that S-HT1A receptor blockade by NAN-190 (1) enhances retention in the passive-avoidance task, and (2) does not consistently increase spontaneous neuronal activity of the CeA-provide evidence that a serotonergic system tonically inhibits modulation of retention in the passive-avoidance task through activation of the S-HT1A receptor subtype at brain sites located outside the CeA
