The article presents the case of a severely handicapped seven-year-old male child with autism. Despite several sensorimotor dysfunctions which presup-pose unfavourable prognosis in his development, the boy systematically shows progress in the areas of cognitive, emotional and social functioning. The author stresses that designing neurologopedic therapy for a child with multiple disability is a very difficult and responsible task. It is always necessary to precisely assess the level of psychomotor functioning of the child, to reasonably estimate its potential and, most importantly, to show therapeutic creativity in the process of attaining the objectives set in the program.W artykule przedstawiono historię siedmioletniego dziecka autystycznego, które los obarczył głęboką niepełnosprawnością. Mimo licznych dysfunkcji sensomotorycznych implikujących niekorzystne rokowania rozwoju, chłopiec systematycznie wykazuje progres w obszarze funkcjonowania poznawczego, emocjonalnego i społecznego. Autorka podkreśla, że opracowanie programu terapii logopedycznej adresowanego do dziecka ze sprzężoną niepełnosprawnością jest zadaniem bardzo trudnym i odpowiedzialnym. Zawsze należy dokładnie określić poziom funkcjonowania psychomotorycznego małego dziecka, realnie ocenić jego możliwości, a przede wszystkim wykazać kreatywność terapeutyczną w realizowaniu wytyczonych w programie celów

Effect of nitrogen sources on fermentation process and formation of hydrogen sulfide and ethyl carbamate by wine yeast

The addition of nitrogen compounds during winemaking is required for the fermentation process to be conducted properly. These compounds are known to be essential to the vinification process, not only because they influence yeast growth but also because they affect the formation of main and by-products. The effect of nitrogen source on in vitro and in situ formation of hydrogen sulfide and ethyl carbamate was studied. Research material comprised two strains of wine yeast: Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In vitro model was carried out in a synthetic defined medium. In situ fermentations were carried out in musts prepared from apple concentration. The process of hydrogen sulfide formation was intensified in nitrogen deficiency. The presence of amino acids in a model substrate resulted in significant changes in the efficiency of formation of both compounds. Yeasts produced more H2S in the presence of Cys, Phe, Gly, Glu, Ile, Thr, Pro, Leu, Trp, Val and less in the presence Ala, Arg, Asp, His, Ser, Met. The formation of ethyl carbamate was limited by the amino acids, except Arg, Asp and Lys, which during fermentation with Syrena yeasts caused an increase in the efficiency of formation of this compound. The Fermivit V preparation stimulated yeasts to form H2S. In the presence of this preparation the Syrena yeasts formed more ethyl carbamate while Hefix yeasts formed about 3-fold less of this compound then in the presence diamonium phosphate

Ultrasonographic features of hip joints in mucopolysaccharidoses type I and II

The primary aim of this study was to assess the ultrasonographic features of hip joints in patients with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) type I and II in comparison with healthy population. The secondary aims were to correlate these features with clinical measures and to evaluate the utility of ultrasound in the diagnosis of MPS disease.Sixteen MPS I (n = 3) and II (n = 13) patients were enrolled in the present study and underwent clinical and radiological evaluation, and bilateral high-resolution ultrasonography (US) of hip joints. The distance from the femoral neck to joint capsule (synovial joint space, SJS), joint effusion, synovial hyperthrophy, and local pathological vascularization were evaluated. The results were compared to the healthy population and correlated with clinical and radiological measures.1. There was a difference in US SJS between children with MPS disease and the normative value for healthy population (7mm). Mean values of SJS were 15.81 ± 4.08 cm (right hip joints) and 15.69 ± 4.19 cm (left joints). 2. No inflammatory joint abnormalities were detected in MPS patients. 3. There was a clear correlation between US SJS and patients' age and height, while no clear correlation was observed between SJS and disease severity.1. Patients with MPS I and II present specific features in hip joint ultrasonography. 2. The data suggests that ultrasonography might be effective in the evaluation of hip joint involvement in patients with MPS and might present a valuable tool in facilitating the diagnosis and follow up of the disease

    Ovarian adenocarcinoma in 14-year-old girl

Ovarian tumors have an uncommon occurrence in children and adolescent girls compared with adult women. The peak incidence of ovarian tumors is between 15–19 years of age. Malignant ovarian tumors in children and adolescent girls are extremely rare. A case of a 14-year-old girl with ovarian mucinous adenocarcinoma that has probably not been described before in the literature is presented below

Objectives: The aim of the present study is to assess differences in body composition between female participants in the study group who suffer from PCOS versus a healthy control group. Material and methods: The study included 85, 14–22-year-old, female participants. Participants belonged to one of two groups. Thirty seven participants with a diagnosis of PCOS were in the clinical group, and 48 participants were in the healthy control group with no prior diagnosis of PCOS. Results: A statistically significant difference between groups was found in their answer regarding diet. A correlation was found between the body fat index and the use of dieting among participants; participants with a lower body fat index (in kilograms) were less likely to be on a diet. Conclusions: The young female participants with PCOS were shown to have similar body composition to age-matched healthy controls. However, the clinical group with PCOS reported more frequent use of dieting, with less use of exercise

Photoluminescence and electrical properties in Pr-modified (Ba1-xCax)TiO3 multifunctional ceramics

Mechanoluminescence materials, characterized with non-thermal light emission in response to mechanical stimuli, can have many applications in direct conversion of mechanical energy into light energy. The aim of this study was to develop wet chemistry approaches for the synthesis of the finest ceramic powders of barium calcium titanate for the use in the production of a mechanoluminescent detector. Wet chemistry route allows the control of the particle size of ceramic materials up to several nanometers. For the first time luminescence was recorded in Ba0.9Ca0.1TiO3 ceramics despite reports that light emission in BCT is possibly only over 23% of calcium content. The resulting ceramics showed high relative density, reasonable ferro and dielectric properties, and red light emission can be observed with the naked eye
