Water ascent in trees and lianas: the cohesion-tension theory revisited in the wake of Otto Renner

The cohesion-tension theory of water ascent (C-T) has been challenged over the past decades by a large body of experimental evidence obtained by means of several minimum or non-invasive techniques. The evidence strongly suggests that land plants acquire water through interplay of several mechanisms covered by the multi-force theory of (U. Zimmermann et al. New Phytologist 162: 575615, 2004). The diversity of mechanisms includes, for instance, water acquisition by inverse transpiration and thermodynamically uphill transmembrane water secretion by cation-chloride cotransporters (L.H. Wegner, Progress in Botany 76:109141, 2014). This whole plant perspective was opened by Otto Renner at the beginning of the last century who supported experimentally the strictly xylem-bound C-T mechanism, yet anticipated that the water ascent involves both the xylem conduit and parenchyma tissues. The survey also illustrates the known paradigm that new techniques generate new insights, as well as a paradigm experienced by Max Planck that a new scientific idea is not welcomed by the community instantly

The following article provides an overview of teacher diagnosis and diagnostic competence. Starting with a presentation of basic approaches and diagnostic tasks, the main focus lies on the role of educational diagnosis in instruction and with respect to student learning. Special emphasis is put on two major approaches: teachers’ judgement accuracy and judgement processes. A brief review of selected results of research in these domains is given. Finally, the importance of diagnostic competence, limitations of research, and consequences regarding the improvement of teacher diagnosis are discussed

Partial substitution of concentrates by maize silage in rations for organic dairy cows and its influence on performance and utilization efficiency

The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of partial substitution of purchased concentrates with maize silage on feed intake, energy and nutrient supply, milk production and feed utilization efficiency in organic dairy cows. In the experiment, two winter rations were compared. In the experimental group (E) 2/3 of average herd concentrate intake were replaced by maize silage. In group E total dry matter, protein und energy intake was significantly lower than in the control group (C) (16.3 and 17.8 kg, 99 and 110 MJ NEL, 2170 and 2460 g crude protein, respectively). Milk yield decreased in group E by 1.7 kg, which was not statistically significant. Ruminal nitrogen balance and dietary protein to energy ratio was significantly lower in group E as compared to group C (-8 and 22 g, 21 and 24 g/MJ NEL, respectively). The diet for group E had no effect on milk composition, except milk urea content, which was in tendency lower in group E (15 and 17 mg 100ml-1). Estimated milk yield from forage was considerably higher in group E (15.9 vs 13.5 kg). Efficiency of nitrogen (N) utilization was tendencially higher in group E

    The Ministry of Absolution

The Commission on Worship and Spiritual Life of the Lutheran World Federation at its meeting in Hanover (March-April 1967) decided to summarize its general discussion on absolution and to use it as a basis for further research. At the same time the commission wanted to develop a questionnaire on the basis of its discussion and send it to several experts. Those experts were expected to be particularly well-trained theologians as well as people experienced in hearing private confessions and in pastoral counseling. The commission sought reactions to four specific questions
