Electric Polarizability of Neutral Hadrons from Lattice QCD
By simulating a uniform electric field on a lattice and measuring the change
in the rest mass, we calculate the electric polarizability of neutral mesons
and baryons using the methods of quenched lattice QCD. Specifically, we measure
the electric polarizability coefficient from the quadratic response to the
electric field for 10 particles: the vector mesons and ; the
octet baryons n, , , , and ;
and the decouplet baryons , , and .
Independent calculations using two fermion actions were done for consistency
and comparison purposes. One calculation uses Wilson fermions with a lattice
spacing of fm. The other uses tadpole improved L\"usher-Weiss gauge
fields and clover quark action with a lattice spacing fm. Our results
for neutron electric polarizability are compared to experiment.Comment: 25 pages, 20 figure

In vitro activities of MCB3681 and 8 comparators against Clostridium difficile isolates with known ribotypes and diverse geographical spread
Treatments for Clostridium difficile infection remain limited, despite the introduction of fidaxomicin, and development of new agents is necessary. We determined the in vitro susceptibilities of 199 prevalent or emerging Clostridium difficile PCR ribotypes to MCB3681, a novel investigational quinolonyl-oxazolidinone, and 8 comparators (metronidazole, vancomycin, fidaxomicin, moxifloxacin, ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, tigecycline and linezolid). MCB3681 showed good activity against C. difficile with no evidence of MCB3681 resistance in isolates showing either or both moxifloxacin and linezolid resistance

Development of an Integrated Governance Strategy for the Voluntary and Community Sector
This report on governance provides a framework for thinking about how policy makers, funders, regulators and advisers can all work with Board members and staff to enhance the effectiveness of nonprofit organisations. It was commissioned by the Active Community Unit (ACU) of the Home Office, in parallel with other reviews designed to improve the capacity of the voluntary and community sector, at a time when the sector plays an increasingly important role in the delivery of services using public funds. That role has recently been investigated in two Government reports, the Cross Cutting Review carried out by the Treasury, and the Strategy Unit review of charities and nonprofits. Our report proposes actions of three types: some that can be taken immediately, some that require further discussion with key interests, and some integration with the other ACU reviews. Taken together they provide the starting point for an evolving strategy to improve governance across the sector. We recommend ACU chairs a group charged with the responsibility for planning and implementing this. Our focus is on governance as 'the systems and processes concerned with ensuring the overall direction, supervision and accountability of an organisation'. This is often taken to mean the way that a Board, management committee or other governing body steers the overall development of an organisation, where day-to-day management is in the hands of staff or volunteers. Sometimes, of course, the committee and volunteers are the same. They – like all governing bodies – have to balance the interests of the organisation and those they are trying to serve, while being conscious of financial and legal responsibilities, and the requirements of funders and other supporters
Comparison of H alpha synoptic charts with the large-scale solar magnetic field as observed at Stanford
Two methods of observing the neutral line of the large-scale photospheric magnetic field are compared: (1) neutral line positions inferred from H alpha photographs and (2) observations of the photospheric magnetic field made with low spatial resolution (3 arc min.) and high sensitivity using the Stanford magnetograph. The comparison is found to be very favorable
Fidelity for displaced squeezed states and the oscillator semigroup
The fidelity for two displaced squeezed thermal states is computed using the
fact that the corresponding density operators belong to the oscillator
semigroup.Comment: 3 pages, REVTEX, no figures, submitted to Journal of Physics A, May

Criminal self-efficacy and perceptions of risk and reward among women methamphetamine manufacturers
People consider potential risks and rewards while deciding whether to engage in crime. Such perceptions and their impact on behavior can vary according to individual differences like criminal self-efficacy, or one’s perception of criminal competency. We examine perceptions of skill, risk, and reward using semi-structured interviews with 46 women “shake and bake” meth cooks currently residing in a halfway house in Alabama. Those who expressed cooking self-efficacy identified many tangible and intangible rewards in meth cooking, which motivated them to persist. They believed the risks were lower and surmountable, employing various risk management strategies. Those who did not express cooking self-efficacy saw cooking as anxiety-inducing, rather than rewarding. They saw the risks as inevitable and made little effort to prevent them but continued cooking to maintain access to meth. Findings indicate that individual levels of criminal self-efficacy should be considered in studies of decision-making and in intervention and treatment strategies
Urban water reuse: A triple bottom line assessment framework and review
Water reuse networks have been emerging globally for the last 50 years. This article reviews the economic, social and environmental issues related to implementing water reuse networks in cities. This is reflecting the fact that globally many cities are categorised as water scarce areas, where there is growing imbalance between water demand and availability. In this sense, there is a need for sustainable water supply solutions in the imminent future to provide and maintain service reliability, particularly in the face of climate change. To demonstrate the sustainability implications of water reuse practices, we review a case study in London, UK
