intuicyjna, „przyjazna użytkownikowi” – prosta zarówno do opanowania,
S.N. Thomasa (1986) i M. Tokarza (2006). Jej szczegóły, a także sposób
prezentowania jej studentom, wypracowałem podczas prowadzonych przeze
mnie kursów z zakresu logiki nieformalnej i krytycznego myślenia
Argumenty równi pochyłej : analiza z perspektywy logiki nieformalnej
The book is devoted to the so called slippery slope arguments. The very arguments,
often expressed during the debates concerning important and controversial
ethical and social issues (among others the right to abortion and euthanasia,
genetic engineering, access to illegal drugs, freedom of speech and its limitations),
usually show how the approval of an ostensibly innocent point of view or the execution
of a non-threatening action may become the first step on the way to the
effect that is hard to accept.
Slippery slope arguments evoke many discussions among logicians and philosophers
investigating them. While some of them regard the very arguments
as warnings demanding a serious treatment, others treat them as eristic tricks
not worth a lot. This book constitutes an attempt to answer the questions what
the slippery slope arguments really are and what their real value is. Apart from
a “slippery slope” referred to in the title, the arguments considered as related are
thoroughly analysed: arguments from analogy, ad consequentiam arguments, ad
absurdum arguments, as well as sorites paradox, known since ancient times.
Researching real arguments such as the ones presented in the work requires
specific tools. The methods proposed by the traditional formal logic prove useless
to reach this aim. Thus, the analysis of the arguments included in the book was
conducted on the basis of the tools worked out within the scope of informal logic
— a relatively young research area intensively developing since the second half
of the 20th century
Nieformalne metody badania rozumowań
The aim of the paper is to point that the reasonings may be tested with the
methods different from those proposed by formal logic. Scholars involved in the late
the XXth-century current of “informal logic” refuse to make the logical entailment of
the conclusion from the given premises of the only criteria of the correctness of the
reasoning. Instead of this, they propose to take into consideration some other
characteristics of reasonings, which traditional logic treats as unimportant or
elusive
Rozwiązanie takie, choć proste i eleganckie, rodzi jednak
inne poważne problemy. Pewną pomoc w rekonstrukcji argumentu stanowić może tzw. „zasada życzliwości”.
Najbardziej pomocna w uzupełnianiu argumentu o brakujące elementy wydaje się jednak teoria schematów
argumentacyjnych rozwijana przez D.N. Waltona. Rekonstruowanie argumentu w taki sposób, aby odpowiadał
on określonemu schematowi, pozwala w wielu przypadkach adekwatnie oddać sens argumentu, ułatwia jego
zrozumienie, a następnie ocenę i ewentualną krytykę podczas dyskusji
Logiczne i empiryczne równie pochyłe
The paper addresses so-called slippery slope arguments, which are usually used
as warnings against accepting a certain view or undertaking some action for the
reason of their negative consequences. Two types of this kind of arguments might be
recognised, which differ significantly: logical and empirical one. Logical slippery
slopes are rarely well supported. Most common flaw they contain is so-called fallacy
of assimilation. Empirical slippery slopes, on the other hand, are definitely much
more powerful kind of argument. Their soundness depends on the truth of premise
according to which decision A1 will finally lead to unwanted outcome An. Yet, the assessment
of this premise, and in consequence of the entire argument, often demands
specialist knowledge in the field
Neoproterozoic crystalline exotic clasts in the Polish Outer Carpathian flysch: remnants of the Proto‑Carpathian continent?
Crystalline exotic boulders within the sedimentary sequences of the Outer Carpathians likely represent Proto-Carpathian
basement, which was exposed and eroded during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic evolution of the Western Carpathian basin. The
majority of the boulders were derived from the Silesian Ridge, which separated the Magura Basin and the Silesian Domains,
and which became a source region during Late Cretaceous–Early Paleocene tectonism. Felsic crystalline clasts within the
Silesian Nappe yield U–Pb zircon magmatic protolith ages of 603.7 ± 3.8 Ma and 617.5 ± 5.2 Ma while felsic crystalline clasts
within the Subsilesian Nappe yield an age of 565.9 ± 3.1 Ma and thus represent different magmatic cycles. The U–Pb zircon
data also imply that the Silesian Ridge was a fragment of the eastern part of the Brunovistulia microcontinent. The presence
of inherited zircon cores, dated at 1.3 and 1.7 Ga, suggests a Baltican source for the clasts, as opposed to Gondwana. We infer
that Late Neoproterozoic felsic magmatism within the Proto-Carpathian continent represents a long-living magmatic arc,
which formed during prolonged Timmanian/Baikalian rather than Pan-African/Cadomian orogenesis. Mafic exotic blocks,
found within the Magura Nappe, yield U–Pb zircon ages of 613.3 ± 2.6 Ma and 614.6 ± 2.5 Ma and likely represent a fragment
of an obducted ophiolitic sequence. The protolith of these mafic boulders could represent Paleoasian Ocean floor located to
the east of Cadomia, obducted during later orogenic processes and incorporated into the accretionary prism. All analysed
exotic clasts show no evidence for younger (Variscan) reworking, which is characteristic of both western Brunovistulia and
the Central Western Carpathians and the Cadomian elements of Western Europe. The Silesian and Subsilesian basins thus
had a likely source area in the eastern part of Brunovistulia, while the source of the Magura Basin was the Fore-Magura
Ridge, whose basement potentially represents an accretionary prism on the margin of the East European Craton
Marasmius oreades agglutinin enhances resistance of Arabidopsis against plant-parasitic nematodes and a herbivorous insect
Background Plant-parasitic nematodes and herbivorous insects have a significant negative impact on global crop production. A successful approach to protect crops from these pests is the in planta expression of nematotoxic or entomotoxic proteins such as crystal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) or plant lectins. However, the efficacy of this approach is threatened by emergence of resistance in nematode and insect populations to these proteins. To solve this problem, novel nematotoxic and entomotoxic proteins are needed. During the last two decades, several cytoplasmic lectins from mushrooms with nematicidal and insecticidal activity have been characterized. In this study, we tested the potential of Marasmius oreades agglutinin (MOA) to furnish Arabidopsis plants with resistance towards three economically important crop pests: the two plant-parasitic nematodes Heterodera schachtii and Meloidogyne incognita and the herbivorous diamondback moth Plutella xylostella. Results The expression of MOA does not affect plant growth under axenic conditions which is an essential parameter in the engineering of genetically modified crops. The transgenic Arabidopsis lines showed nearly complete resistance to H. schachtii, in that the number of female and male nematodes per cm root was reduced by 86-91 % and 43-93 % compared to WT, respectively. M. incognita proved to be less susceptible to the MOA protein in that 18-25 % and 26-35 % less galls and nematode egg masses, respectively, were observed in the transgenic lines. Larvae of the herbivorous P. xylostella foraging on MOA-expression lines showed a lower relative mass gain (22-38 %) and survival rate (15-24 %) than those feeding on WT plants. Conclusions The results of our in planta experiments reveal a robust nematicidal and insecticidal activity of the fungal lectin MOA against important agricultural pests which may be exploited for crop protection
Argumentacja w edukacji: postulaty badań edukacyjnych w polskiej szkole argumentacji
Uwzględniając dotychczasową działalność Polskiej Szkoły Argumentacji,
w szczególności jej działalność edukacyjną wyeksponowaną
podczas XV konferencji ArgDiaP, sformułowaliśmy postulaty dotyczące
dalszej działalności edukacyjnej Szkoły. Ich realizacja w ciągu
najbliższych lat mogłaby stanowić grunt dla długoterminowych celów
edukacyjnych, takich jak (1) opracowanie spójnego programu nauczania
sztuki argumentowania i krytycznego myślenia w szkołach podstawowych
i średnich oraz (2) zaprojektowanie ogólnopolskich standardów
i ram nauczania przedmiotów powiązanych z argumentacją
This book contains a selection of theoretical works and photo essays as well as a chronicle of photo competitions organised in the Faculty of Architecture and Fine Arts at Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University since 2008, which is meant as the record of thoughts related to the specific, omnipresent though little examined so far, realm of the theory of architecture, i.e. photography. Its specific variant closely related to the building practice is called architectural photography. This monograph, however, is not restricted by means of the said definition and attempts at a slightly broader description of the phenomenon, reaching beyond its boundaries.Monografia powstała w ramach projektu badawczego nr WAiSP/DS/4/201
