Evaluation of Diets in Paperback Books and Popular Magazines for the Nutritional Adequacy of Teenage Girls
The purpose of this study is to provide a resource which can guide media specialists an the selection and use of diet programs found in paperback books and popular magazines. The media specialist can use the results directly as well as use the criteria to evaluate new diets as they appear. The study will evaluate the diets according to the Basic 4 food guide and the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA). The results are expected to show that one fourth or less of the diets found in paperback books will meet all the criteria. It is expected that the diets found in magazines will do slightly better. Still over one half will be lacking in one or more of the major nutrients. If the above statements are true, the media specialist has a responsibility to provide wise selection and guidance in the use of such diets found in the media center materials
Structure and dynamics of binary complex plasmas
This thesis investigates the structure and dynamics of binary mixtures in complex (dusty) plasmas. Besides neutral atoms, ions and electrons, these systems contain micron-sized glass or polymer particles which attain high negative charges. The particles can be levitated in the plasma and form crystals under certain conditions. In nature, dusty plasmas occur polydisperse, while laboratory experiments mainly use monodisperse particle samples. A first important step en route to polydisperse complex plasmas in the laboratory are binary mixtures, containing two distinct particle species of different sizes. Since most forces scale with particle size, the addition of a second dust component with different size will modify the total force balance. Consequently, this will impact confinement, structure, manipulation and distribution functions of these systems. Lasers are a well established minimally invasive tool for the excitation of dynamic phenomena in complex plasmas. In binary mixtures the forces will deviate due to different particle types being used. This motivated an investigation of the contributions of radiation pressure and photophoretic forces to the total laser force. Within the scope of this work the impact of the altered force balance on structure, lasermanipulation and (thermo-)dynamics in mixed binary systems was investgated. Besides the developement of a preparation scheme for two-dimensional binary complex plasmas the contributions of both radiation pressure and photophoretic forces to the light force on microparticles were determined in these systems for the first time. The insight into the laser particle interaction made first experiments on the thermodynamics of binary mixtures feasible. By using laser manipulation, a binary system featuring two particle species with different temperatures could be produced and maintained in the same volume. This extraordinary state is ideally suited for experiments on the equilibration and mixing of two subsystems. Heat capacities determined from the change in entropy in these systems follow the Dulong-Petit law and confirm their model system characteristics
