    Te covered Si(001): a variable surface reconstruction

    At a given temperature, clean and adatom covered silicon surfaces usually exhibit well-defined reconstruction patterns. Our finite temperature ab-initio molecular dynamics calculations show that the tellurium covered Si(001) surface is an exception. Soft longitudinal modes of surface phonons due to the strongly anharmonic potential of the bridged tellurium atoms prevent the reconstruction structure from attaining any permanent, two dimensional periodic geometry. This explains why experiments attempting to find a definite model for the reconstruction have reached conflicting conclusions.Comment: 4 pages, 3 gif figure

    NatF Contributes to an Evolutionary Shift in Protein N-Terminal Acetylation and Is Important for Normal Chromosome Segregation

    N-terminal acetylation (N-Ac) is a highly abundant eukaryotic protein modification. Proteomics revealed a significant increase in the occurrence of N-Ac from lower to higher eukaryotes, but evidence explaining the underlying molecular mechanism(s) is currently lacking. We first analysed protein N-termini and their acetylation degrees, suggesting that evolution of substrates is not a major cause for the evolutionary shift in N-Ac. Further, we investigated the presence of putative N-terminal acetyltransferases (NATs) in higher eukaryotes. The purified recombinant human and Drosophila homologues of a novel NAT candidate was subjected to in vitro peptide library acetylation assays. This provided evidence for its NAT activity targeting Met-Lys- and other Met-starting protein N-termini, and the enzyme was termed Naa60p and its activity NatF. Its in vivo activity was investigated by ectopically expressing human Naa60p in yeast followed by N-terminal COFRADIC analyses. hNaa60p acetylated distinct Met-starting yeast protein N-termini and increased general acetylation levels, thereby altering yeast in vivo acetylation patterns towards those of higher eukaryotes. Further, its activity in human cells was verified by overexpression and knockdown of hNAA60 followed by N-terminal COFRADIC. NatF's cellular impact was demonstrated in Drosophila cells where NAA60 knockdown induced chromosomal segregation defects. In summary, our study revealed a novel major protein modifier contributing to the evolution of N-Ac, redundancy among NATs, and an essential regulator of normal chromosome segregation. With the characterization of NatF, the co-translational N-Ac machinery appears complete since all the major substrate groups in eukaryotes are accounted for

    Search for the Structure of a Sulfur-Induced Reconstruction on Cu(111)

    We have carried out an extensive DFT-based search for the structure of the (√43 × √43)R ± 7.5° reconstruction of S on Cu(111), which exhibits a honeycombtype structure in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We apply two criteria in this search: The structure must have a reasonably low chemical potential, and it must provide a good match with STM data, both our own and the data published by Wahlström et al. Phys. Rev. B 1999, 60, 10699. The best model has 12 S adatoms and 9 Cu adatoms per unit cell. Local defects within the Cu9S12 framework, consisting of one missing or one extra Cu adatom per unit cell, would be difficult to detect with STM and would not be energetically costly. There is no obvious correlation between this model and the structure of bulk CuS. If the √43 reconstruction is viewed in terms of local building blocks, then CuS3 and CuS2 clusters, linked by shared S atoms, provides the best description.Reprinted (adapted) with permission from Journal of Physical Chemistry C 118 (2014): 29218, doi: 10.1021/jp505351g.     Women and power: a theoretical approach using the example of copreneurial businesses

    Despite the gradual recognition of strategic issues related to the integration of women into the economy, female entrepreneurship continues to receive little attention. Family business research attributes this situation to a lack of recognition given to the (decisive) role of women in these organizations. However, there is one type of family governance that formally acknowledges the man/woman combination: the copreneurial company. Copreneurs are couples who run a business together. This theoretical article highlights the role of women in the copreneurial context by distinguishing between formal and informal power- the latter being primarily held by women, but which is no less influential. The distribution of power reduces opposition costs between partners and the social costs of non-compliance, and improves the clarity of the entrepreneurial structure. Moreover, it increases satisfaction and a feeling of equality between the partners. These results can be generalized and shed light on the role of women in other entrepreneurial and social contexts.     Regulation of glutamine synthetase from Saccharomyces cerevisiae by repression, inactivation and proteolysis.

    Glutamine synthetase activity is modulated by nitrogen repression and by two distinct inactivation processes. Addition of glutamine to exponentially grown yeast leads to enzyme inactivation. 50% of glutamine synthetase activity is lost after 30 min (a quarter of the generation time). Removing glutamine from the growth medium results in a rapid recovery of enzyme activity. A regulatory mutation (gdhCR mutation) suppresses this inactivation by glutamine in addition to its derepressing effect on enzymes involved in nitrogen catabolism. The gdhCR mutation also increases the level of proteinase B in exponentially grown yeast. Inactivation of glutamine synthetase is also observed during nitrogen starvation. This inactivation is irreversible and consists very probably of a proteolytic degradation.     Oxidation of the 8 × 8-reconstructed ˇ-Si3N4(0 0 0 1) surface:A photoemission study

    The thermal oxidation of the beta-Si3N4(0 0 0 1)-8 × 8 surface has been carried out. The spectroscopic characterization has been performed by high resolution core-level and by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our findings demonstrate that the surface shows a low but clear reactivity with oxygen. The known resonance ascribed to the 8 × 8 reconstruction results strongly affected by the oxygen dosing, demonstrating the involvement of the topmost nitride atoms
