Submicrosecond comparisons of time standards via the Navigation Technology Satellites (NTS)
An interim demonstration was performed of the time transfer capability of the NAVSTAR GPS system using a single NTS satellite. Measurements of time difference (pseudo-range) are made from the NTS tracking network and at the participating observatories. The NTS network measurements are used to compute the NTS orbit trajectory. The central NTS tracking station has a time link to the Naval Observatory UTC (USNO,MC1) master clock. Measurements are used with the NTS receiver at the remote observatory, the time transfer value UTC (USNO,MC1)-UTC (REMOTE, VIA NTS) is calculated. Cost efficient operations for Discovery class missions
The Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) program at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory is scheduled to launch the first spacecraft in NASA's Discovery program. The Discovery program is to promote low cost spacecraft design, development, and mission operations for planetary space missions. The authors describe the NEAR mission and discuss the design and development of the NEAR Mission Operations System and the NEAR Ground System with an emphasis on those aspects of the design that are conducive to low-cost operations
Recent advances on IMF research
Here I discuss recent work on brown dwarfs, massive stars and the IMF in
general. The stellar IMF can be well described by an invariant two-part power
law in present-day star-formation events within the Local Group of galaxies. It
is nearly identical in shape to the pre-stellar core mass function. The
majority of brown dwarfs follow a separate IMF. Evidence from globular clusters
and ultra-compact dwarf galaxies has emerged that IMFs may have been top heavy
depending on the star-formation rate density. The IGIMF then ranges from bottom
heavy at low galaxy-wide star formation rates to being top-heavy in

Biomarkers of Tuberculosis Severity and Treatment Effect: A Directed Screen of 70 Host Markers in a Randomized Clinical Trial.
More efficacious treatment regimens are needed for tuberculosis, however, drug development is impeded by a lack of reliable biomarkers of disease severity and of treatment effect. We conducted a directed screen of host biomarkers in participants enrolled in a tuberculosis clinical trial to address this need. Serum samples from 319 protocol-correct, culture-confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis patients treated under direct observation as part of an international, phase 2 trial were screened for 70 markers of infection, inflammation, and metabolism. Biomarker assays were specifically developed for this study and quantified using a novel, multiplexed electrochemiluminescence assay. We evaluated the association of biomarkers with baseline characteristics, as well as with detailed microbiologic data, using Bonferroni-adjusted, linear regression models. Across numerous analyses, seven proteins, SAA1, PCT, IL-1ÎČ, IL-6, CRP, PTX-3 and MMP-8, showed recurring strong associations with markers of baseline disease severity, smear grade and cavitation; were strongly modulated by tuberculosis treatment; and had responses that were greater for patients who culture-converted at 8weeks. With treatment, all proteins decreased, except for osteocalcin, MCP-1 and MCP-4, which significantly increased. Several previously reported putative tuberculosis-associated biomarkers (HOMX1, neopterin, and cathelicidin) were not significantly associated with treatment response. In conclusion, across a geographically diverse and large population of tuberculosis patients enrolled in a clinical trial, several previously reported putative biomarkers were not significantly associated with treatment response, however, seven proteins had recurring strong associations with baseline radiographic and microbiologic measures of disease severity, as well as with early treatment response, deserving additional study
Can cutaneous telangiectasiae as late normal-tissue injury predict cardiovascular disease in women receiving radiotherapy for breast cancer?
Background: Overall, ~5% of patients show late normal-tissue damage after radiotherapy with a smaller number having a risk of radiation-induced heart disease. Although the data are conflicting, large studies have shown increased risks of cardiovascular disease (CVD) for irradiated patients compared with non-irradiated ones, or for those treated to the left breast or chest wall compared with those treated to the right. Cutaneous telangiectasiae as late normal-tissue injury have so far only been regarded as a cosmetic burden.
Methods: The relationship between late normal-tissue radiation injury phenotypes in 149 irradiated breast cancer patients and the presence of cardiovascular disease were examined.
Results: A statistically significant association between the presence of skin telangiectasiae and the long-term risk of CVD was shown in these patients (P=0.017; Fisher's exact test).
Interpretation: This association may represent initial evidence that telangiectasiae can be used as a marker of future radiation-induced cardiac complications. It could also suggest a common biological pathway for the development of both telangiectasiae and CVD on the basis of a genetically predisposed endothelium. To our knowledge this is the first reported study looking at this association
An evaluation of a nurse led unit: an action research study
This study is an exemplar of working in a participatory way with members of the public and health and social care practitioners as co-researchers. A Nurse Consultant Older People working in a nurse-led bed, intermediate care facility in a community hospital acted as joint project lead with an academic researcher. From the outset, members of the public were part of a team of 16 individuals who agreed an evaluation focus and were involved in all stages of the research process from design through to dissemination. An extensive evaluation reflecting all these stakeholdersâ preferences was undertaken. Methods included research and audit including: patient and carer satisfaction questionnaire surveys, individual interviews with patients, carers and staff, staff surveys, graffiti board, suggestion box, first impressions questionnaire, patient tracking and a bed census. A key aim of the study has been capacity building of the research team members which has also been evaluated. In terms of impact, the co-researchers have developed research skills and knowledge, grown in confidence, developed in ways that have impacted elsewhere in their lives, developed posters, presented at conferences and gained a better understanding of the NHS. The evaluation itself has provided useful information on the processes and outcomes of intermediate care on the ward which was used to further improve the service
Dynamical Expansion of Ionization and Dissociation Front around a Massive Star. II. On the Generality of Triggered Star Formation
We analyze the dynamical expansion of the HII region, photodissociation
region, and the swept-up shell, solving the UV- and FUV-radiative transfer, the
thermal and chemical processes in the time-dependent hydrodynamics code.
Following our previous paper, we investigate the time evolutions with various
ambient number densities and central stars. Our calculations show that basic
evolution is qualitatively similar among our models with different parameters.
The molecular gas is finally accumulated in the shell, and the gravitational
fragmentation of the shell is generally expected. The quantitative differences
among models are well understood with analytic scaling relations. The detailed
physical and chemical structure of the shell is mainly determined by the
incident FUV flux and the column density of the shell, which also follow the
scaling relations. The time of shell-fragmentation, and the mass of the
gathered molecular gas are sensitive tothe ambient number density. In the case
of the lower number density, the shell-fragmentation occurs over a longer
timescale, and the accumulated molecular gas is more massive. The variations
with different central stars are more moderate. The time of the
shell-fragmentation differs by a factor of several with the various stars of
M_* = 12-101 M_sun. According to our numerical results, we conclude that the
expanding HII region should be an efficient trigger for star formation in

Spatial-Distance Cues Influence Economic Decision-Making in a Social Context
Social distance (i.e., the degree of closeness to another person) affects the
way humans perceive and respond to fairness during financial negotiations.
Feeling close to someone enhances the acceptance of monetary offers. Here, we
explored whether this effect also extends to the spatial domain. Specifically,
using an iterated version of the Ultimatum Game in a within-subject design, we
investigated whether different visual spatial distance-cues result in
different rates of acceptance of otherwise identical monetary offers. Study 1
found that participants accepted significantly more offers when they were cued
with spatial closeness than when they were cued with spatial distance. Study 2
replicated this effect using identical procedures but different spatial-
distance cues in an independent sample. Importantly, our results could not be
explained by feelings of social closeness. Our results demonstrate that mere
perceptions of spatial closeness produce analogousâbut independentâeffects to
those of social closeness
