    A Descriptive Study of Undergraduate Student and Faculty Perspectives of Engagement When Learning About Cultural Content

    poster abstractPurpose: The purpose of this study was to explore student perception of engagement and knowledge gained during two class sessions on cultural competence using interactive teaching strategies. Improving cultural knowledge among nursing students can be expected to lead to the provision of culturally competent care upon graduation. Methods: A qualitative, descriptive design was used. Data was collected at the IU School of Nursing during two class sessions from 49 students and the course faculty. Three strategies were used to collect data: the one-minute paper (OMP) to gather the students’ perspectives, field notes taken during the class sessions, and interviews with the faculty before and after the class sessions. Results: Data showed recurring themes for each of the 3 OMP questions. When asked “What three things did you learn about culture during class,” the themes that emerged included knowledge of specific cultural practices, intercultural communication strategies, subculture/cultural differences, and the importance of cultural competence. Themes from the second question “What stood out for you the most” were cultural specifics, broad concepts, and means of teaching. The themes of the third question, “When did you feel most engaged,” were scenario/skit, questions, while presenting, feedback, and interaction. We found that out of the all the interactive techniques used, the skit had the greatest positive feedback. Students who reported the skit as being the time of greatest engagement also reported the skit as the time they learned the greatest content on cultural and subcultural differences as well as importance of cultural competency. Conclusion: We found that a high impact teaching strategy enhanced student engagement and learning. We encourage both students and teachers to take full advantage of interactive learning strategies as a way to promote deep learning about cultural competence

    The Meaning and Motivation of Children Participating in Animal-Assisted Therapy: A Pilot Study

    Background: Despite claims that animal-assisted therapy is beneficial, there is limited empirical evidence supporting this. Current literature supports the physical, emotional, and psychological benefits an animal can provide, but few studies have explored the outcomes of incorporating an animal into skilled treatment facilitated by a healthcare professional. This study seeks to explore the effects of animal-assisted therapy in outpatient pediatric occupational therapy practice. Purpose: The purpose of this research is to explore the meaningfulness and motivation animal-assisted therapy interventions provide for pediatric clients when compared with traditional occupational therapy treatment. Methods: Researchers utilized a within-participants repeated-measures design for this study. Children receiving animal-assisted therapy at a private practice occupational therapy clinic were videoed performing therapeutic activities with a licensed occupational therapist and trained dogs. The videos were gathered both with and without the animal present in the therapy session and coded to determine the meaningfulness and motivation of animal-assisted therapy versus traditional therapy without a dog. Results: Statistical analysis indicated that the childrens’ scores for initiating interactions with the therapist were significantly higher in the without dog condition than in the live dog condition. Furthermore, four out of the five children demonstrated increased on task/dog comments in the live dog condition than in the stuffed dog condition. The specific intervention activity performed influenced children’s engagement and enjoyment of animal-assisted therapy interventions. Conclusion: This pilot study provides preliminary evidence that animal-assisted therapy increases children’s enjoyment and engagement during therapeutic activities when a dog was present. Furthermore, the type of animal-assisted therapy activity performed may influence the children’s motivation to participate

    Calf pre-weaning traits and immunoglobulin response to bovine viral diarrhea virus vaccination

    Calfhood vaccination for bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a relatively new concept, and protocols are evolving. Our objective was to determine effects of BVDV type I vaccination protocol, calf behavior (chute score, and chute exit velocity), and gender on calf gain and immunoglobulin (Ig) response. Crossbred calves (n = 64) were randomly allotted to one of two vaccination protocols. In protocol 1, calves were vaccinated at 60 d of age (d 0) and at weaning (d 147). Calves assigned to protocol 2 were vaccinated against BVDV type I at 21 d prior to (d 126) and at weaning (d 147). Blood samples were collected from half of the calves in each protocol group on d 0 (60 days of age), d 21, d 126 (21 days prior to weaning), and d 147 (at weaning); serum was harvested and Ig titers were determined. Titers for BVDV type I were transformed (log base 2) and analyzed using a mixed model procedure. Calves vaccinated at d 0 and weaning had larger (P \u3c 0.0001) titers than calves vaccinated at d 126 and weaning (7.5 ± 0.36 and 5.1 ± 0.36, respectively). Mean BVDV titers were larger (P \u3c 0.0001) on d 147 when compared with d 126, d 21, and d 0 (8.3 ± 0.39, 5.1 ± 0.40, 5.9 ± 0.39 and 5.7 ± 0.39, respectively). A treatment × day interaction (P \u3c 0.0001) also affected BVDV titers. However, BVDV titers were not affected (P \u3e 0.05) by calf gender, chute score, or chute exit velocity. Weaning weight and pre-weaning average daily gain (ADG) were not related to BVDV type I titers. This study indicated that vaccinating beef calves against BVDV was effective in triggering an Ig response. Furthermore, our results suggest that calves should be vaccinated against BVDV type I at 60 d of age for greater disease resistance

    Factors Affecting the Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics of PEGylated Liposomal Irinotecan (IHL-305) in Patients with Advanced Solid Tumors

    IHL-305 is a PEGylated liposomal formulation of irinotecan (CPT-11). The objective of this study was to evaluate the factors associated with interpatient variability in the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of IHL-305 in patients with advanced solid tumors. IHL-305 was administered intravenously once every 4 weeks as part of a Phase I study. Pharmacokinetic studies of the liposomal sum total CPT-11, released CPT-11, SN-38, SN-38G, 7-ethyl-10-[4-N-(5-aminopentanoic acid)-1-piperidino]-carbonyloxycamptothecin, and 7-ethyl-10-[4-amino-1-piperidino]-carbonyloxycamptothecin in plasma were performed. Noncompartmental and compartmental pharmacokinetic analyses were conducted using pharmacokinetic data for sum total CPT-11. The pharmacokinetic variability of IHL-305 is associated with linear and nonlinear clearance. Patients whose age and body composition (ratio of total body weight to ideal body weight [TBW/IBW]) were greater than the median age and TBW/IBW of the study had a 1.7-fold to 2.6-fold higher ratio of released CPT-11 area under the concentration versus time curve (AUC) to sum total CPT-11 AUC. Patients aged \u3c60 years had a 1.3-fold higher ratio of percent decrease in monocytes at nadir to percent decrease in absolute neutrophil count at nadir as compared with patients aged ≥60 years. There was an inverse relationship between patient age and percent decrease in monocytes at nadir, ie, younger patients have a higher percent decrease in monocytes. Patients with a higher percent decrease in monocytes at nadir have a decreased plasma exposure of sum total CPT-11. The pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of IHL-305 are consistent with those of other PEGylated liposomal carriers.     BMP9 Mutations Cause a Vascular-Anomaly Syndrome with Phenotypic Overlap with Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia

    Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), the most common inherited vascular disorder, is caused by mutations in genes involved in the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) signaling pathway (ENG, ACVRL1, and SMAD4). Yet, approximately 15% of individuals with clinical features of HHT do not have mutations in these genes, suggesting that there are undiscovered mutations in other genes for HHT and possibly vascular disorders with overlapping phenotypes. The genetic etiology for 191 unrelated individuals clinically suspected to have HHT was investigated with the use of exome and Sanger sequencing; these individuals had no mutations in ENG, ACVRL1, and SMAD4. Mutations in BMP9 (also known as GDF2) were identified in three unrelated probands. These three individuals had epistaxis and dermal lesions that were described as telangiectases but whose location and appearance resembled lesions described in some individuals with RASA1-related disorders (capillary malformation-arteriovenous malformation syndrome). Analyses of the variant proteins suggested that mutations negatively affect protein processing and/or function, and a bmp9-deficient zebrafish model demonstrated that BMP9 is involved in angiogenesis. These data confirm a genetic cause of a vascular-anomaly syndrome that has phenotypic overlap with HHT
