    Garbage Disposal

    The purpose of this report is to outline a new design for a sink garbage disposal system. The goal of this design is to develop a garbage disposal that could be made for less money, which would turn into a cost savings for the consumer and would lead to an increase in the amount of garbage disposal systems being used throughout the world. This allows the garbage disposal system to be marketed to different parts of the world that currently can’t afford the systems available on the market. The increased use of garbage disposals, help reduce the amount of organic material in landfills. This will reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere, which would just be another step in the direction of helping preserve the planet. This design utilizes a stack up of seven blades that spin on a shaft ran by a small, but high powered motor. The motor is attached on the side of the food chamber, to help protect it from the water and food that passes through the system. All of the parts would be injection molded if the design is taken to production, with the exception of the motor, seals, and fasteners. This design attaches to sinks different than the current models on the market. Rather than having the garbage disposal installed directly to the sink, it installs directly into the drainage pipes. This allows installation to be easier than the current market garbage disposals. Overall, this report outlines a design for a garbage disposal system to be installed into the drain pipes, specifically under a sink. The design is compact and light, but still powerful. This allows the design to be a cost reduction for the manufacturing process, which will allow it to be marketed to consumers for less money

    Abstract"Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is a widely used surgery in the management of obesity. Common late complications of RYGB include: Anastomotic stricture, small bowel obstruction, internal hernia, dumping syndrome, cholelithiasis, malnutrition, marginal ulceration, gastro-gastric fistula. Gastropericardial fistulas are an extremely rare but lifethreatening late complication. [less than] 70 cases in modern literature from review in 2016. Mean time of presentation 84 months after surgery (median 60 months).     An Off-Axis Relativistic Jet Model for the Type Ic supernova SN 2007gr

    We propose an off-axis relativistic jet model for the Type Ic supernova SN 2007gr. Most of the energy (2×1051\sim2\times10^{51} erg) in the explosion is contained in non-relativistic ejecta which produces the supernova. The optical emission is coming from the decay process of 56Ni\rm ^{56}Ni synthesized in the bulk SN ejecta. Only very little energy (1048\sim10^{48} erg) is contained in the relativistic jet with initial velocity about 0.94 times the speed of light. The radio and X-ray emission comes from this relativistic jet. With some typical parameters of a Wolf-Rayet star (progenitor of Type Ic SN), i.e., the mass loss rate M˙=1.0×105Myr1\dot{M}=1.0 \times10^{-5} M_{\odot} \rm yr^{-1} and the wind velocity vw=1.5×103kms1v_{\rm w}=1.5\times10^{3} \rm km s^{-1} together with an observing angle of θobs=63.3\theta_{\rm obs} = 63.3^{\circ}, we can obtain the multiband light curves that fit the observations well. All the observed data are consistent with our model.     Mitochondrial phylogeography and demographic history of the Vicuña: implications for conservation

    The vicuña (Vicugna vicugna; Miller, 1924) is a conservation success story, having recovered from near extinction in the 1960s to current population levels estimated at 275 000. However, lack of information about its demographic history and genetic diversity has limited both our understanding of its recovery and the development of science-based conservation measures. To examine the evolution and recent demographic history of the vicuña across its current range and to assess its genetic variation and population structure, we sequenced mitochondrial DNA from the control region (CR) for 261 individuals from 29 populations across Peru, Chile and Argentina. Our results suggest that populations currently designated as Vicugna vicugna vicugna and Vicugna vicugna mensalis comprise separate mitochondrial lineages. The current population distribution appears to be the result of a recent demographic expansion associated with the last major glacial event of the Pleistocene in the northern (18 to 22°S) dry Andes 14–12 000 years ago and the establishment of an extremely arid belt known as the 'Dry Diagonal' to 29°S. Within the Dry Diagonal, small populations of V. v. vicugna appear to have survived showing the genetic signature of demographic isolation, whereas to the north V. v. mensalis populations underwent a rapid demographic expansion before recent anthropogenic impacts

    Medication Assisted Treatment: Experiences from the Field

    The use of heroin and other opiates has increased considerably in recent years with many users becoming involved with the criminal justice system. Because of this growth, the use of medication assisted treatment is becoming increasingly popular in courts that specialize in opiate addictions. This paper analyzes the experiences of treatment teams in courts that specialize in providing medication assisted treatment. Overall, perceptions of medication assisted treatment were positive although service providers identified some limitations. Recognizing the benefits and limitations of medication assisted treatment is useful for social work practice that focuses on opiate addictions because heroin use continues to rise

    Dynamic patterning at the pylorus: Formation of an epithelial intestine–stomach boundary in late fetal life

    In the adult mouse, distinct morphological and transcriptional differences separate stomach from intestinal epithelium. Remarkably, the epithelial boundary between these two organs is literally one cell thick. This discrete junction is established suddenly and precisely at embryonic day (E) 16.5, by sharpening a previously diffuse intermediate zone. In the present study, we define the dynamic transcriptome of stomach, pylorus, and intestinal tissues between E14.5 and E16.5. We show that establishment of this boundary is concomitant with the induction of over a thousand genes in intestinal epithelium, and these gene products provide intestinal character. Hence, we call this process intestinalization . We identify specific transcription factors (Hnf4Γ, Creb3l3, and Tcfec) and examine signaling pathways (Hedgehog and Wnt) that may play a role in this process. Finally, we define a unique expression domain at the pylorus itself and detect novel pylorus-specific patterns for the transcription factor Gata3 and the secreted protein nephrocan.     Extensive optical and near-infrared observations of the nearby, narrow-lined type Ic SN 2007gr: days 5 to 415

    We present photometric and spectroscopic observations at optical and near-infrared wavelengths of the nearby type Ic SN 2007gr. These represent the most extensive data-set to date of any supernova of this sub-type, with frequent coverage from shortly after discovery to more than one year post-explosion. We deduce a rise time to B-band maximum of 11.5 \pm 2.7 days. We find a peak B-band magnitude of M_B=-16.8, and light curves which are remarkably similar to the so-called 'hypernova' SN 2002ap. In contrast, the spectra of SNe 2007gr and 2002ap show marked differences, not least in their respective expansion velocities. We attribute these differences primarily to the density profiles of their progenitor stars at the time of explosion i.e. a more compact star for SN 2007gr compared to SN 2002ap. From the quasi-bolometric light curve of SN 2007gr, we estimate that 0.076 ±\pm 0.010 Msun of 56Ni was produced in the explosion. Our near-infrared (IR) spectra clearly show the onset and disappearance of the first overtone of carbon monoxide (CO) between ~70 to 175 days relative to B-band maximum. The detection of the CO molecule implies that ionised He was not microscopically mixed within the carbon/oxygen layers. From the optical spectra, near-IR light curves, and colour evolution, we find no evidence for dust condensation in the ejecta out to about 400 days. Given the combination of unprecedented temporal coverage, and high signal-to-noise data, we suggest that SN 2007gr could be used as a template object for supernovae of this sub-class.Comment: A&A accepted; 26 pages & 16 figure

    The Toronto Adolescent and Youth Cohort Study:Study Design and Early Data Related to Psychosis Spectrum Symptoms, Functioning, and Suicidality

    BACKGROUND: Psychosis spectrum symptoms (PSSs) occur in a sizable percentage of youth and are associated with poorer cognitive performance, poorer functioning, and suicidality (i.e., suicidal thoughts and behaviors). PSSs may occur more frequently in youths already experiencing another mental illness, but the antecedents are not well known. The Toronto Adolescent and Youth (TAY) Cohort Study aims to characterize developmental trajectories in youths with mental illness and understand associations with PSSs, functioning, and suicidality.METHODS: The TAY Cohort Study is a longitudinal cohort study that aims to assess 1500 youths (age 11-24 years) presenting to tertiary care. In this article, we describe the extensive diagnostic and clinical characterization of psychopathology, substance use, functioning, suicidality, and health service utilization in these youths, with follow-up every 6 months over 5 years, including early baseline data.RESULTS: A total of 417 participants were enrolled between May 4, 2021, and February 2, 2023. Participants met diagnostic criteria for an average of 3.5 psychiatric diagnoses, most frequently anxiety and depressive disorders. Forty-nine percent of participants met a pre-established threshold for PSSs and exhibited higher rates of functional impairment, internalizing and externalizing symptoms, and suicidality than participants without PSSs.CONCLUSIONS: Initial findings from the TAY Cohort Study demonstrate the feasibility of extensive clinical phenotyping in youths who are seeking help for mental health problems. PSS prevalence is much higher than in community-based studies. Our early data support the critical need to better understand longitudinal trajectories of clinical youth cohorts in relation to psychosis risk, functioning, and suicidality.</p

    Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

    The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∼99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∼1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead
