Proactive Evaluation of Traffic Signs Using a Traffic Sign Simulator

Traffic signs and pavement markings are a crucial aspect of road design since they are essential sources of information for road users to calibrate their driving behavior, evaluate route possibilities and cope with unexpected events. A proactive evaluation of (the quality of) these road design elements will help to improve the safety performance of the roadway. This paper presents the Traffic Sign Simulator, an innovative research tool to study the influence of these elements on road users’ routing decisions, lane choice and visual behavior, to investigate road users’ comprehension of these signs, and to collect suggestions for improvements. Using a driving simulator mock-up, participants navigate through a full HD video from route(s) in which the planned traffic signs have been digitally implemented using specialized software for camera-tracking and 3D video-integration. Participants’ route and lane choice and their visual behavior (using eye tracking) are monitored while driving through the scenario(s). Laptop preand post-tests are applied to collect additional in-depth information concerning the participants’ processing, comprehension and general evaluation of the traffic signs and suggestions for improvement. Communicerende vaten? Een onderzoek naar de relatie tussen werkloosheid en sociale bijstand. Deel 1. Nieuwe aanvragen bij de OCMW's

Jaarlijks worden tienduizenden mensen door de RVA tijdelijk of definitief geschorst omwille van werkweigering en -verlating, als administratieve sanctie of omwille van langdurige werkloosheid. De OCMW’s rapporteren een stijging van het aantal aanvragen om bijstand, en zoeken een deel van de verklaring hiervoor in het schorsingsbeleid van de RVA. Is dit zo? Is er een afwenteling van de RVA op de OCMW’s? Hoe verhouden de sociale bijstand en de werkloosheid zich met elkaar? Om op deze vragen te antwoorden, werd een onderzoek opgezet waarin een vijftigtal OCMW’s bevraagd werden. De onderzoeksvragen werden opgedeeld in twee blokken. Een eerste serie vragen zoekt een antwoord op de vraag hoeveel nieuwe aanvragen om een bestaansminimum die met de RVA te maken hebben, door de OCMW’s opgetekend werden in de periode januari 1996 tot en met september 1996. De OCMW’s registreerden hiertoe wie er een aanvraag indiende omwille van een sanctie door de RVA. Daarnaast werd hen ook gevraagd op te tekenen hoeveel nieuwe aanvragen er ingediend werden om een voorschot te krijgen op een werkloosheidsuitkering of om een aanvulling te krijgen op een uitkering die lager ligt dan het bestaansminimum. De tweede reeks vragen zoekt een antwoord op de vraag wie van de door de OCMW’s als nieuwe aanvrager geregistreerde cliënten daadwerkelijk bij de RVA wordt teruggevonden. De eerste serie vragen worden in dit rapport beantwoord. The research carried out for this book aims on the one hand to map the labour market integration of asylum seekers, refugees and people who were granted the status of subsidiary protection between January 2001 and December 2010, and on the other hand to create socioeconomic profiles (based on legal status, family situation, labour market position, gender, age, etc.).
