Strengthening organizational performance through accreditation research - a framework for twelve interrelated studies: the ACCREDIT project study protocol
Background: Service accreditation is a structured process of recognising and promoting performance and adherence to standards. Typically, accreditation agencies either receive standards from an authorized body or develop new and upgrade existing standards through research and expert views. They then apply standards, criteria and performance indicators, testing their effects, and monitoring compliance with them. The accreditation process has been widely adopted. The international investments in accreditation are considerable. However, reliable evidence of its efficiency or effectiveness in achieving organizational improvements is sparse and the value of accreditation in cost-benefit terms has yet to be demonstrated. Although some evidence suggests that accreditation promotes the improvement and standardization of care, there have been calls to strengthen its research base. In response, the ACCREDIT (Accreditation Collaborative for the Conduct of Research, Evaluation and Designated Investigations through Teamwork) project has been established to evaluate the effectiveness of Australian accreditation in achieving its goals. ACCREDIT is a partnership of key researchers, policymakers and agencies.FindingsWe present the framework for our studies in accreditation. Four specific aims of the ACCREDIT project, which will direct our findings, are to: (i) evaluate current accreditation processes; (ii) analyse the costs and benefits of accreditation; (iii) improve future accreditation via evidence; and (iv) develop and apply new standards of consumer involvement in accreditation. These will be addressed through 12 interrelated studies designed to examine specific issues identified as a high priority. Novel techniques, a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods, and randomized designs relevant for health-care research have been developed. These methods allow us to circumvent the fragmented and incommensurate findings that can be generated in small-scale, project-based studies. The overall approach for our research is a multi-level, multi-study design.DiscussionThe ACCREDIT project will examine the utility, reliability, relevance and cost effectiveness of differing forms of accreditation, focused on general practice, aged care and acute care settings in Australia. Empirically, there are potential research gains to be made by understanding accreditation and extending existing knowledge; theoretically, this design will facilitate a systems view of accreditation of benefit to the partnership, international research communities, and future accreditation designers

From Crisis to Opportunity: A Licensing Audit How-To
In June 2013, the University of British Columbia (UBC) Library completed a 6-month project that involved the audit and analysis of over 700 licensing documents. Long overdue and the result of nearly a year of planning, the project brought about the successful implementation of an electronic resource management system, Serials Solutions’s 360 Resource Manager, and the reorganization of the UBC public-facing license permissions database.
This paper follows the evolution of the UBC license reanalysis project from its inception to conclusion and emphasizes the influence of the changing copyright environment in Canada and institutional perceptions of risk. The development and deployment of a license management system is a fundamentally complex process; project management, data standards, and an iterative approach were all central to the project’s success

The single-leg vertical hop provides unique asymmetry information in individuals after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction
Background: Traditional testing to identify asymmetries after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction include four similar horizontal hopping tests. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a single-leg vertical hopping test can identify performance and biomechanical asymmetries, and whether performance asymmetries provide unique information compared to traditional tests. Methods: Twelve women with history of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction [age: 21.1 years (SD 3.2), height: 165.8 cm (SD 6.0), mass: 68.3 kg (SD 8.8)] completed traditional horizontal hop testing. Participants also performed a single-leg vertical hop for maximal height while instrumented for three-dimensional motion analysis. Paired t-tests were performed to identify side-to-side differences in performance variables and Spearman\u27s rank correlations were performed of limb symmetry indices to identify whether the single-leg vertical hop test provides unique information. Repeated measures MANOVAs were performed to identify single-leg vertical hop biomechanical asymmetries. Findings: Participants exhibited significant side-to-side performance differences during the single-leg vertical hop [mean difference = 0.02 m (SD 0.03), P = .04]. Only weak to moderate relationships were identified between limb symmetry indices of the single-leg vertical hop and other horizontal hopping tests. The vertical hop elicited significant asymmetries of joint kinematics (P = .04) and angular impulse (P = .04). Specifically, the involved limb showed lower peak ankle dorsiflexion (P = .004) and knee abduction (P = .02) angles, lower sagittal plane impulse at the knee (P = .02) and greater sagittal plane impulse at the hip (P = .03). Interpretation: The single-leg vertical hop can identify performance and biomechanical asymmetries in individuals after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, potentially providing complementary information to standard horizontal hopping tests
Sex Differences in Response-Contingent Cannabis Vapor Administration During Adolescence Mediate Enduring Effects on Behavioral Flexibility and Prefrontal Microglia Activation in Rats
: Introduction: Cannabis is the most used illicit drug in the United States. With many states passing legislation to permit its recreational use, there is concern that cannabis use among adolescents could increase dramatically in the coming years. Historically, it has been difficult to model real-world cannabis use to investigate the causal relationship between cannabis use in adolescence and behavioral and neurobiological effects in adulthood. Materials and Methods: We used a response-contingent vapor administration model to investigate long-term effects of cannabis use during adolescence on the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and mPFC-dependent behaviors in male and female rats. Results: Adolescent (35- to 55-day-old) female rats had significantly higher rates of responding for vaporized Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-dominant cannabis extract (CANTHC) compared with adolescent males. In adulthood (70-110 days old), female, but not male, CANTHC rats also took more trials to reach criterion and made more regressive errors in an automated attentional set-shifting task compared with vehicle rats, thereby indicating sex differences in behavioral flexibility impairments. Notably, sex-treatment interactions were not observed when rats of each sex were exposed to a noncontingent CANTHC vapor dosing regimen that approximated CANTHC vapor deliveries earned by females. No differences were observed in effort-based decision making in either sex. In the mPFC, female (but not male) CANTHC rats displayed more reactive microglia with no changes in myelin basic protein expression or dendritic spine density. Conclusion: Altogether, these data reveal important sex differences in rates of responding for CANTHC vapor in adolescence that may confer enduring alterations to mPFC structure and function and suggest that there may be subtle differences in the effects of response-contingent versus noncontingent cannabis exposure that should be systematically examined in future studies
