    In recent times there has been a great interest in the history of women and gender relations in India. The rise of subaltern history has led to a renewed awareness of women’s role in history. Important women have played a very prominent role in the empowerment of women in India. Pandita Ramabai was one such woman. She was a pioneer in the field of women’s education and reform work for widows. The life and work of Pandita Ramabai (1858-1922) is immensely important today for understanding the social and religious reform movement in India. The research motivation was to study the mammoth contribution of strong women who have been relegated to the footnotes of history. The objective of this research is to glean details of the contribution of Pandita Ramabai in this regard. Another objective is to examine the magnitude of her work in the socio-religious milieu in which she operated. The methodology, which I have used, is both primary and secondary. I have referred to the books by eminent scholars and I have visited the Pandita Ramabai Mukti Mission at Kedgaon and had the privilege to access the works of Pandita Ramabai in the Archives of the Pandita Ramabai Mukti Mission. The findings of this paper reveal what a pioneer Pandita Ramabai was in the arena of women’s emancipation. The Research Outcome shows that Ramabai is a very important example of a woman’s voice, speaking fervently on the ways in which she saw men as having silenced and subdued Indian wome

    Reflections on (de)colonialism in language documentation

    With origins in colonial logics and institutions, language documentation practices can reinforce colonial power hierarchies and norms in ways that work against the needs and values of Indigenous language communities. This paper highlights major patterns through which this occurs, along with their effects, and models how language documentation can be structured in ways that are more grounded in the experiences and perspectives of the communities that use it. I propose decolonial interventions that emerge from Indigenous research principles and perspectives, and illustrate how these practices can better support language community needs while also improving the scientific value of language documentation.National Foreign Language Resource Cente

    The purpose of this study was to investigate whether teacher preparation programs are equipping preservice teachers for responsiveness to principal leadership styles and the impact on teacher perceived organizational fit. Determining whether preservice programs prepare teachers for the dynamics of the school environment could be beneficial in improving retention and attrition. A qualitative design was utilized to gather data through interviews with instructors, students, and alumni of a teacher preparation program in the Midwest.     Dynamics of ``Small Galaxies'' in the Hubble Deep Field

    We have previously found in the Hubble Deep Field a significant angular correlation of faint, high color-redshift objects on scales below one arcsecond, or several kiloparsecs in metric size. We examine the correlation and nearest neighbor statistics to conclude that 38% of these objects in the HDF have a companion within one arcsecond, three times the number expected in a random distribution with the same number of objects. We examine three dynamical scenarios for these object multiplets: 1) the objects are star-forming regions within normal galaxies, whose disks have been relatively dimmed by K-correction and surface brightness dimming; 2) they are fragments merging into large galaxies; 3) they are satellites accreting onto normal L_* galaxies. We find that hypothesis 1 is most tenable. First, large galaxies in the process of a merger formation would have accumulated too much mass in their centers (5e12 M_sun inside 2 kpc) to correspond to present day objects. Second, accretion by dynamical friction occurs with a predictable density vs. radius slope, not seen among the faint HDF objects. Since the dynamical friction time is roughly (1 Gyr), a steady-state should have been reached by redshift z < 5. Star-forming regions within galaxies clearly present no dynamical problems. Since large spirals would still appear as such in the HDF, we favor a scenario in which the faint compact sources in the HDF are giant starforming regions within small normal galaxies, such as Magellanic irregulars. Finally we checked that reduction in mass-to-light from induced star-formation cannot alone explain the luminosity overdensity.Comment: AASTeX 4.0 (preprint), 4 PostScript figure

    Near term measurements with 21 cm intensity mapping: neutral hydrogen fraction and BAO at z<2

    It is shown that 21 cm intensity mapping could be used in the near term to make cosmologically useful measurements. Large scale structure could be detected using existing radio telescopes, or using prototypes for dedicated redshift survey telescopes. This would provide a measure of the mean neutral hydrogen density, using redshift space distortions to break the degeneracy with the linear bias. We find that with only 200 hours of observing time on the Green Bank Telescope, the neutral hydrogen density could be measured to 25% precision at redshift 0.54<z<1.09. This compares favourably to current measurements, uses independent techniques, and would settle the controversy over an important parameter which impacts galaxy formation studies. In addition, a 4000 hour survey would allow for the detection of baryon acoustic oscillations, giving a cosmological distance measure at 3.5% precision. These observation time requirements could be greatly reduced with the construction of multiple pixel receivers. Similar results are possible using prototypes for dedicated cylindrical telescopes on month time scales, or SKA pathfinder aperture arrays on day time scales. Such measurements promise to improve our understanding of these quantities while beating a path for future generations of hydrogen surveys.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev. D. Drug repurposing, the process of identifying new therapeutic uses for existing drugs, has emerged as a promising approach to Accelerate the development of effective treatments for bacterial infections. This research aims to highlight the importance of drug repurposing in the context of bacterial infections in an effort to emphasize the various advantages it offers over traditional drug discovery methods. We have selected 6 drugs that are not infrequently used to treat infections (including gentamycin sulfate, simvastatin, caspofungin, finasteride, ketorolac and clarithromycin) and tested their efficacy as antibacterial agents using four bacterial strains (Escherichia, Serratia, Micrococcus and Bacillus) as target model systems. We performed a comprehensive high throughput screening using a 96 well microplate approach and determined the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of bacterial growth. Our results indicate that Finasteride and Ketorolac are effective against the gram-negative bacteria Escherichia and Serratia, whereas Caspofungin and Clarithromycin are the most effective against the gram-positive Micrococcus and Bacillus. These results shed light into future perspectives of antimicrobial agents and possible treatments for fastidious infections. Embracing drug repurposing as a complementary strategy to traditional drug discovery efforts holds tremendous potential in the fight against bacterial infections

    The Effect of Affinity Design on Review Helpfulness: An Experimental Study of Online Passenger Review in the Airline Industry

    Online reviews have drawn the attention of the MIS community. According to a survey conducted by an e-tailing group, 63% of consumers repeatedly collect product information online before making purchases. Half of them spend at least 10 minutes searching for product information. Similarity, airline passengers should read reviews before booking tickets, because the outcome of taking a plane with an unknown airline cannot be anticipated by inexperienced passengers. However, we have little information about why passengers interact with these reviews differently. Long searches are especially likely for popular air routes or airlines, where passengers often face information overload. Passengers may also give more weight to negative reviews and reviews written by someone with strong social tie or similar background with them. In addition, they may give the most weight to the reviews they read first. Thus, we want to know (a) does the order in which reviews are read matter and (b) does the reviewer’s background matter? If they do matter, how? The current study designs an experimental flying review website, using the concepts of “consumer affinity” and “review arrangement”. We aim to explore the best way for passengers understanding the performance of the airline, saving their cognitive efforts to process reviews, and provoking their receptions of social presence
