    Measurement of the Omega_c Lifetime

    We present the measurement of the lifetime of the Omega_c we have performed using three independent data samples from two different decay modes. Using a Sigma- beam of 340 GeV/c we have obtained clean signals for the Omega_c decaying into Xi- K- pi+ pi+ and Omega- pi+ pi- pi+, avoiding topological cuts normally used in charm analysis. The short but measurable lifetime of the Omega_c is demonstrated by a clear enhancement of the signals at short but finite decay lengths. Using a continuous maximum likelihood method we determined the lifetime to be tau(Omega_c) = 55 +13-11(stat) +18-23(syst) fs. This makes the Omega_c the shortest living weakly decaying particle observed so far. The short value of the lifetime confirms the predicted pattern of the charmed baryon lifetimes and demonstrates that the strong interaction plays a vital role in the lifetimes of charmed hadrons.Comment: 15 pages, including 7 figures; gzipped, uuencoded postscrip

    Search for the exotic Ξ(1860)\Xi^{--}(1860) Resonance in 340GeV/c Σ\Sigma^--Nucleus Interactions

    We report on a high statistics search for the Ξ(1860)\Xi^{--}(1860) resonance in Σ\Sigma^--nucleus collisions at 340GeV/c. No evidence for this resonance is found in our data sample which contains 676000 Ξ\Xi^- candidates above background. For the decay channel Ξ(1860)Ξπ\Xi^{--}(1860) \to \Xi^-\pi^- and the kinematic range 0.15<xF<<x_F<0.9 we find a 3σ\sigma upper limit for the production cross section of 3.1 and 3.5 μ\mub per nucleon for reactions with carbon and copper, respectively.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, modification of ref. 43 and 4

    CERN experiment WA89 has studied charmed particles produced by a Sigma^- beam at 340 GeV/c on nuclear targets. Production of particles which have light quarks in common with the beam is compared to production of those which do not. Considerable production asymmetries between D^- and D^p, D_s^ and D_s^+ and Lambda_c and Antilambda_c are observed.     Crystal structure of sinhalite MgAlBO4 under high pressure

To access the final edited and published work see http://dx.doi.org/10.1021/jp512131eWe report on high-pressure angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction data up to 27 GPa for natural MgAlBO4 sinhalite mineral and ab initio total energy calculations. The experimental bulk modulus of sinhalite is B-0 = 171(3) GPa with a first-pressure derivative of B-0' = 4.2(3). A comparison with other olivine-type compounds shows that the value for B0 is 27% larger than that of Mg2SiO4 forsterite and 29% smaller than that of Al2BeO4 chrysoberyl. These differences are interpreted, on the basis of our ab initio calculations, in terms of the relative incompressibility of Al-O bonds in AlO6 octahedra (with a calculated bulk modulus of 250(1) GPa) as compared to Mg-O bonds in MgO6 octahedra (with a calculated bulk modulus of 130(1) GPa). The spatial cation distribution in the Pbnm orthorhombic unit cell and different polyhedral compressibilities entails a strong anisotropic compression comparable to that of forsterite. The axial compressibilities are 1.06(2) x 10(-3), 2.17(2) x 10(-3), and 1.30(3) x 10(-3) GPa(-1) for a, b, and c axes, respectively. The crystal chemistry of sinhalite under compression is compared to that of other olivine-like compounds.     Search for the pentaquark candidate Θ+\Theta^+(1540) in the hyperon beam experiment WA89

    We report on a high-statistics search for the \t1540 resonance in Σ\Sigma^--nucleus collisions at 340 \gevc1 . No evidence for this resonance was found in our data sample which contains 13 millions Ks0π+πK^0_s \to \pi^+\pi^- decays above background. For the decay channel Θ+Ks0p\Theta^+ \to K^0_s p and the kinematic range xF>x_F> 0.05 we find the production cross section to be BR(Θ+Ks0p)σ0<BR(\Theta^+ \to K^0_s p)\cdot \sigma_0 < 1.8 μ\mub per nucleon at 99% CL.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Asymmetries Between the Production of Ds- and Ds+ Mesons from 500 GeV/c pi- Nucleon Interactions as Functions of x_F and square of p_t

    This paper presents measurements of the production of Ds- mesons relative to Ds+ mesons as functions of x_F and square of p_t for a sample of 2445 Ds decays to phi pi. The Ds mesons were produced in Fermilab experiment E791 with 500 GeV/c pi- mesons incident on one platinum and four carbon foil targets. The acceptance-corrected integrated asymmetry in the x_F range -0.1 to 0.5 for Ds+- mesons is 0.032 +- 0.022 +- 0.022, consistent with no net asymmetry. The results, as functions of x_F and square of p_t, are compared to predictions and to the large production asymmetry observed for D+- mesons in the same experiment. These comparisons support the hypothesis that production asymmetries come from the fragmentation process and not from the charm quark production itself.Comment: Latex file (11 pages) and three eps files for figures This paper has been accepted for publication by Physics Letters
