Data integration in a modular and parallel grid-computing workflow

    Get PDF
In the past decades a wide range of complex processes have been developed to solve specific geospatial data integration problems. As a drawback these complex processes are often not sufficiently transferable and interoperable. We propose modularisation of the whole data integration process into reusable, exchangeable, and multi-purpose web services to overcome these drawbacks. Both a high-level split of the process into subsequent modules such as pre-processing and feature matching is discussed as well as another fine-granular split within these modules. Thereby complex integration problems can be addressed by chaining selected services as part of a geo-processing workflow. Parallelization is needed for processing massive amounts of data or complex algorithms. In this paper the two concepts of task and data parallelization are compared and examples for their usage are given. The presented work provides vector data integration within grid-computing workflows of the German Spatial Data Infrastructure Grid (SDI-Grid) project.BMB

Bloch oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates: Breakdown and revival

We investigate the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in a tilted one-dimensional periodic lattice within the mean-field (Gross-Pitaevskii) description. Unlike in the linear case the Bloch oscillations decay because of nonlinear dephasing. Pronounced revival phenomena are observed. These are analyzed in detail in terms of a simple integrable model constructed by an expansion in Wannier-Stark resonance states. We also briefly discuss the pulsed output of such systems for stronger static fields.Comment: RevTeX4, 9 pages, 14 figure

Growth Hormone (GH)-Releasing Peptide Stimulation of GH Release from Human Somatotroph Adenoma Cells: Interaction with GH-Releasing Hormone, Thyrotropin- Releasing Hormone, and Octreotide.

The synthetic hexapeptide GH-releasing peptide (GHRP; His-D-Trp-Ala-Trp-D-Phe-Lys-NH2) specifically stimulates GH secretion in humans in vivo and in animals in vitro and in vivo via a still unknown receptor and mechanism. To determine the effect of GHRP on human somatotroph cells in vitro, we stimulated cell cultures derived from 12 different human somatotroph adenomas with GHRP alone and in combination with GH-releasing hormone (GHRH), TRH, and the somatostatin analog octreotide. GH secretion of all 12 adenoma cultures could be stimulated with GHRP, whereas GHRH was active only in 6 adenoma cultures. In GHRH-responsive cell cultures, simultaneous application of GHRH and GHRP had an additive effect on GH secretion. TRH stimulated GH release in 4 of 7 adenoma cultures; in TRH-responsive cell cultures there was also an additive effect of GHRP and TRH on GH secretion. In 5 of 9 adenoma cultures investigated, octreotide inhibited basal GH secretion. In these cell cultures, GHRP-induced GH release was suppressed by octreotide. In 5 of 5 cases, the protein kinase-C inhibitor phloretin partly inhibited GHRP-stimulated GH release, but not basal GH secretion. In summary, GH secretion was stimulated by GHRP in all somatotroph adenomas investigated, indicating that its unknown receptor and signaling pathway are expressed more consistently in somatotroph adenoma cells than those for GHRH, TRH, and somatostatin. Our data give further evidence that GHRP-stimulated GH secretion is mediated by a receptor different from that for GHRH or TRH, respectively, and that protein kinase-C is involved in the signal transduction pathway. Because human somatotroph adenoma cell cultures respond differently to various neuropeptides (GHRH, TRH, somatostatin, and others), they provide a model for further investigation of the mechanism of action of GHRP-induced GH secretion

Fluency Training in Phoneme Blending: A Preliminary Study of Generalized Effects

    Get PDF
We examined the generalized effects of training children to fluently blend phonemes of words containing target vowel teams on their reading of trained and untrained words in lists and passages. Three second-grade students participated. A subset of words containing each of 3 target vowel teams (aw, oi, and au) was trained in lists, and generalization was assessed to untrained words in lists, trained and untrained words in target passages, and novel words in generalization passages. A multiple probe design across vowel teams revealed generalized increases in oral reading accuracy for target words presented in both lists and passages for all 3 students on 2 vowel teams and for 1 student on all 3 vowel teams. Generalized increases in oral reading fluency in both lists and passages were found for all 3 students on the vowel team that was trained to a fluency criterion, with two students showing increases prior to training on the other two vowel teams. Implications of these results for building fluency in prerequisite phonemic awareness skills as an intervention for promoting generalized oral reading fluency are discussed

Downy mildew disease of pearl millet. Information Bulletin no. 37

Downy mildew disease of pearl millet is present in many countries of the world. It is particularly important in western Africa, and in India, where it has caused several severe and widespread epidemics and is a major threat to the cultivation of F1 hybrids. Considerable progress, has been made in understanding pathogen biology and disease epidemiology. This has led to the development of effective and reliable laboratory/greenhouse and field-screening techniques, identification of resistant sources, and use of resistance in breeding programs to develop resistant cultivars. Alternative control measures, particularly with fungicides, have been developed
