    Requirement of RIZ1 for cancer prevention by methyl-balanced diet

    The typical Western diet is not balanced in methyl nutrients that regulate the level of the methyl donor S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) and its derivative metabolite S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH), which in turn may control the activity of certain methyltransferases. Feeding rodents with amino acid defined and methyl-imbalanced diet decreases hepatic SAM and causes liver cancers. RIZ1 (PRDM2 or KMT8) is a tumor suppressor and functions in transcriptional repression by methylating histone H3 lysine 9. Here we show that a methyl-balanced diet conferred additional survival benefits compared to a tumor-inducing methyl-imbalanced diet only in mice with wild type RIZ1 but not in mice deficient in RIZ1. While absence of RIZ1 was tumorigenic in mice fed the balanced diet, its presence did not prevent tumor formation in mice fed the imbalanced diet. Unlike most of its related enzymes, RIZ1 was upregulated by methyl-balanced diet. Methyl-balanced diet did not fully repress oncogenes such as c-Jun in the absence of RIZ1. The data identify RIZ1 as a critical target of methyl-balanced diet in cancer prevention. The molecular understanding of dietary carcinogenesis may help people make informed choices on diet, which may greatly reduce the incidence of cancer

    Distribution of Cenozoic plant relicts in China explained by drought in dry season

    Cenozoic plant relicts are those groups that were once widespread in the Northern Hemisphere but are now restricted to some small isolated areas as a result of drastic climatic changes. They are good proxies to study how plants respond to climatic changes since their modern climatic requirements are known. Herein we look at the modern distribution of 65 palaeoendemic genera in China and compare it with the Chinese climatic pattern, in order to find a link between the plant distribution and climate. Central China and Taiwan Island are shown to be diversity centres of Cenozoic relict genera, consistent with the fact that these two regions have a shorter dry season with comparatively humid autumn and spring in China. Species distribution models indicate that the precipitation parameters are the most important variables to explain the distribution of relict genera. The Cenozoic wide-scale distribution of relict plants in the Northern Hemisphere is therefore considered to be linked to the widespread humid climate at that time, and the subsequent contraction of their distributional ranges was probably caused by the drying trend along with global cooling.Peer reviewe

    Progress of the special-subjects study on the construction of comprehensive geological disaster prevention and control system in Yunnan Province

    The establishment of the comprehensive geological disaster prevention and control system in Yunnan province stands as China’s most extensive and grand-scale endeavor in safeguarding the prevention and control of geological disasters in China. Its implementation has led to a significant reduction in the occurrence of geological disasters, resulting in a substantial decrease in both casualties and missing persons affected by such disasters. This accomplishment has yielded remarkable outcomes in disaster prevention and mitigation. Based on the results of 12 series monographic studies, this paper provides an overview of the implementation of the system and its disaster prevention and mitigation effects. It summarizes the main scientific and technological achievements, with a particular focus on the causes and patterns of plateau geological disasters, understanding of special rock and soil disaster control mechanisms, susceptibility zoning evaluation, comprehensive remote sensing identification of geological hazards, progress in automated monitoring and early warning, and the development of geological environment information standard system. These achievements can provide valuable insights for the comprehensive geological disaster prevention and control in Yunnan Province

    Novel online data allocation for hybrid memories on tele-health systems

    [EN] The developments of wearable devices such as Body Sensor Networks (BSNs) have greatly improved the capability of tele-health industry. Large amount of data will be collected from every local BSN in real-time. These data is processed by embedded systems including smart phones and tablets. After that, the data will be transferred to distributed storage systems for further processing. Traditional on-chip SRAMs cause critical power leakage issues and occupy relatively large chip areas. Therefore, hybrid memories, which combine volatile memories with non-volatile memories, are widely adopted in reducing the latency and energy cost on multi-core systems. However, most of the current works are about static data allocation for hybrid memories. Those mechanisms cannot achieve better data placement in real-time. Hence, we propose online data allocation for hybrid memories on embedded tele-health systems. In this paper, we present dynamic programming and heuristic approaches. Considering the difference between profiled data access and actual data access, the proposed algorithms use a feedback mechanism to improve the accuracy of data allocation during runtime. Experimental results demonstrate that, compared to greedy approaches, the proposed algorithms achieve 20%-40% performance improvement based on different benchmarks. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V.     In this paper, the graphene-assisted Goos–Hänchen (GH) shift of the optical beam reflected from a planar multilayer configuration is investigated. The increased positive Goos–Hänchen shifts can be modulated by adjusting the Fermi energy due to graphene with unique optical properties in the visible light range. Moreover, the GH shift can be tuned by varying the layers of graphene, the thickness of the medium, incident wavelength, and so on. These results will be useful for designing the novel graphene-based optical sensing and switching

    Optimization Analysis of Engine Intake System Based on Coupling Matlab-Simulink with GT-Power

    In the work, the suitable volumetric efficiency is very important for the gasoline engine to achieve the aim of energy-saving and emission reduction. Thus, the intake system characteristics, such as intake manifold length, diameter, volumetric efficiency, and valve phase, should be investigated in detail. In order to investigate the performance optimization of the engine intake system, an optimization model of the engine intake system is developed by the GT-Power coupled with Matlab-Simulink and validated by the experimental results under the different conditions at full load. The engine power-, torque-, and brake-specific fuel consumption are defined as the result variables of the optimization model, and the length and diameter of the intake manifold are defined as the independent variables of the model. The results show that the length of intake manifold has little influence on the engine power and BSFC, and the length of intake manifold has a great impact on the performance index at high speed. In addition, the engine volumetric efficiency is the highest when the length of intake manifold is in the range of 240 and 250 mm. The engine BSFC improved by variable valve timing is significant compared with the original result. Finally, the improvement suggestions for the performance enhancement of the gasoline engine are proposed

    Association of the triglyceride-glucose index and its related parameters with frailty

    Abstract Background Frailty is a dynamic geriatric condition. Limited studies have examined the association of the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and its related indicators [TyG index, triglyceride glucose-waist to height ratio (TyG-WHtR), triglyceride glucose-waist circumference (TyG-WC), and triglyceride glucose-body mass index (TyG-BMI)] with frailty, and the potential links among them remain unclear. On the basis of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), this study investigated the potential relationships of the TyG index and its related indices with frailty. Methods This research included 7,965 participants from NHANES 2003–2018. The relationship of the TyG index and its related indices with frailty was investigated with binary logistic regression analyses, restricted cubic spline (RCS), and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Potential influences were further investigated through stratified analyses and interaction tests. Results The prevalence of frailty in the participants of this study was 25.59%, with a average frailty index of 0.16 (0.00). In the three regression analysis models, the continuous TyG index and its associated indices were positively associated with frailty. In addition, quartiles of TyG, TyG-WC, TyG-WHtR, and TyG-BMI were significantly associated with increased frailty prevalence in the fully adjusted models (TyG Q4 vs. Q1, OR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.19, 2.09, P = 0.002; TyG-WC Q4 vs. Q1, OR = 2.40, 95% CI: 1.90, 3.04, P < 0.001; TyG-WHtR Q4 vs. Q1, OR = 2.26, 95% CI: 1.82, 2.81, P < 0.001; TyG- BMI Q4 vs. Q1, OR = 2.16, 95% CI: 1.76, 2.64, P < 0.001). According to RCS analysis, TyG, TyG-WC, TyG-WHtR, and TyG-BMI were linearly and positively associated with frailty. ROC curves revealed that TyG-WHtR (AUC: 0.654) had greater diagnostic value for frailty than TyG (AUC: 0.604), TyG-BMI (AUC: 0.621), and TyG-WC (AUC: 0.629). All of the stratified analyses and interaction tests showed similar results. Conclusions Elevated TyG and its associaed indices are associated with an increased prevalence of frailty. Reasonable control of blood glucose and blood lipids, and avoidance of obesity, may aid in reducing the occurrence of frailty in middle-aged and older adults
