Foraging opportunity: a method of monitoring shorebird migration and overwintering sites in a changing environment

    Get PDF
Roberts Bank within the Fraser River estuary, BC contains important migratory stopover and overwintering habitat for shorebirds such as the western sandpiper (Calidris mauri) and the Pacific dunlin (Calidris alpina pacifica). Shorebirds are especially abundant during northward migration, with single-day counts numbering into the hundreds of thousands of birds. Previous research and ecological theory have demonstrated that site usage by shorebirds is influenced by numerous factors, including prey availability and predation risk. We developed a concept termed “foraging opportunity” that quantifies shorebird food availability (biofilm, meiofauna, and macrofauna) in relation to predation danger from hunting falcons. Foraging opportunity was determined across Roberts Bank during northward migration and evaluated against shorebird usage for the same period. Model results agreed with prior research and foraging theories, demonstrating good alignment between prey resources and shorebird usage in safer foraging areas and a shift in usage into areas with less prey, but safer foraging conditions, when high prey abundances were located in more dangerous conditions close to shore. As shorebird migration and overwintering sites are potentially affected by a changing environment, including climate change and anthropogenic effects, we suggest foraging opportunity techniques as a method of understanding and monitoring site quality and shorebird distribution patterns in a changing world

Mobile work platform for initial lunar base construction

Described is a system of equipment intended for site preparation and construction of a lunar base. The proximate era of lunar exploration and the initial phase of outpost habitation are addressed. Drilling, leveling, trenching, and cargo handling are within the scope of the system's capabilities. The centerpiece is a three-legged mobile work platform, named SKITTER. Using standard interfaces, the system is modular in nature and analogous to the farmer's tractor and implement set. Conceptually somewhat different from their Earthbound counterparts, the implements are designed to take advantage of the lunar environment as well as the capabilities of the work platform. The proposed system is mechanically simple and weight efficient

Metal Finishes Applicable to the School Shop

The information presented in this study was derived from technical publications in the area of metal finishing. An attempt is made to note the significance of the subject by a survey of other studies and periodicals related to metal finishing in industrial arts metalworking courses. An interpretation of the processes of metal finishing which are adaptable to the metal shop is made in an effort to simplify the technicalities of the subject. The processes surveyed are divided into two broad areas of metal finishing. Those based on mechanical surface treatment are reviewed first. A detailed study of the chemical surface treatments is then made. Equipment to be used is discussed and comments are made on the fabrication of portions of the equipment. The investigation resulted in the observation that there are many industrial finishing processes which can be adapted to the school shop. Some of these are presently used for finishing metal projects, while others are entirely new to industrial arts metalworking. Very few studies have approached the problem of metal finishing. Instructors may vary the mechanical treatment given metal to produce a finished surface with a minimum of revision in the present equipment of the metal shop. The tendency of most instructors is to use organic finishes. Metal finishes can be enhanced by using electroplating. Vitreous coatings are easily applied to small metal objects and represent a parallel to industrial experiences. A list of recommended equiPment to broaden the finishing area is given. Five additional studies in the area of metal finishing are suggested as being of value to industrial arts metalworking. A final recommendation is made concerning the reporting of major researches in periodical literature.Industrial Arts Education and Engineerin

The work of Richard W. James explores themes of personal narrative creation and cognitive dissonance as affected by the influences of culture and religion. In first person narrative, this thesis paper discusses the body of work created for his thesis show in March, 2016. Specifically, this paper explores his motivations for making ceramic work and ways in which past explorations in the studio has led to his current body of work. His personal history, influences, use of form and material choices are explored in detail along with the future trajectory of the artwork
