Effects of classical stochastic webs on the quantum dynamics of cold atomic gases in a moving optical lattice
We introduce and investigate a system that uses temporal resonance-induced
phase space pathways to create strong coupling between an atomic Bose-Einstein
condensate and a traveling optical lattice potential. We show that these
pathways thread both the classical and quantum phase space of the atom cloud,
even when the optical lattice potential is arbitrarily weak. The topology of
the pathways, which form web-like patterns, can by controled by changing the
amplitude and period of the optical lattice. In turn, this control can be used
to increase and limit the BEC's center-of-mass kinetic energy to pre-specified
values. Surprisingly, the strength of the atom-lattice interaction and
resulting BEC heating of the center-of-mass motion is enhanced by the repulsive
inter-atomic interactions.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

Total nutrient intake (TNI) is intake from food and supplements. This provides an assessment of nutrient adequacy and the prevalence of excessive intake, as well as the response with respect to biomarkers. Cod liver oil (CLO) is the most frequently consumed supplement in the UK, containing nutrients that might have varying influences on health. We calculated TNI for vitamins A, D and E, as well as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and assessed associations with the respective blood concentrations
Anomalous increase in nematic-isotropic transition temperature in dimer molecules induced by magnetic field
We have determined the nematic-isotropic transition temperature as a function of applied magnetic field in three different thermotropic liquid crystalline dimers. These molecules are comprised of two rigid calamitic moieties joined end to end by flexible spacers with odd numbers of methylene groups. They show an unprecedented magnetic field enhancement of nematic order in that the transition temperature is increased by up to 15K when subjected to 22T magnetic field. The increase is conjectured to be caused by a magnetic field-induced decrease of the average bend angle in the aliphatic spacers connecting the rigid mesogenic units of the dimers
A Frequency Analysis Approach for Categorizing Air Traffic Behavior
A method of analyzing National Air Space (NAS) air traffic that uses the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) is presented. The DFT is used to transform time domain traffic count data into the frequency domain where the sources of traffic in air spaces can be identified and characterized more easily. It is shown in simulation that individual traffic flows within Air Route Traffic Control Centers can be distinguished by their periodicity in the DFT plot. Next, three Traffic Management Initiatives (playbook rerouting, metered flows, and Ground Delay Programs) are implemented in simulations and their signature effects on the traffic are identified using the DFT. Finally, historical flight data is studied and the DFT is applied to sector traffic count data. It is found that in many cases, variations in traffic due to rerouting and convective weather disturbances are better highlighted in the frequency domain than in the original time domain data. Initial results of the DFT show it has potential as a tool for measuring and/or predicting NAS behavior for daily tactical planning and control purposes
Mobile Communication Signatures of Unemployment
The mapping of populations socio-economic well-being is highly constrained by
the logistics of censuses and surveys. Consequently, spatially detailed changes
across scales of days, weeks, or months, or even year to year, are difficult to
assess; thus the speed of which policies can be designed and evaluated is
limited. However, recent studies have shown the value of mobile phone data as
an enabling methodology for demographic modeling and measurement. In this work,
we investigate whether indicators extracted from mobile phone usage can reveal
information about the socio-economical status of microregions such as districts
(i.e., average spatial resolution < 2.7km). For this we examine anonymized
mobile phone metadata combined with beneficiaries records from unemployment
benefit program. We find that aggregated activity, social, and mobility
patterns strongly correlate with unemployment. Furthermore, we construct a
simple model to produce accurate reconstruction of district level unemployment
from their mobile communication patterns alone. Our results suggest that
reliable and cost-effective economical indicators could be built based on
passively collected and anonymized mobile phone data. With similar data being
collected every day by telecommunication services across the world,
survey-based methods of measuring community socioeconomic status could
potentially be augmented or replaced by such passive sensing methods in the
future
Abundances of Molecular Species in Barnard 68
Abundances for 5 molecules (C18O, CS, NH3, H2CO, and C3H2) and 1 molecular
ion (N2H+) and upper limits for the abundances of 1 molecule (13CO) and 1
molecular ion (HCO+) are derived for gas within the Bok globule Barnard 68
(B68). The abundances were determined using our own BIMA millimeter
interferometer data and single-dish data gathered from the literature, in
conjunction with a Monte Carlo radiative transfer model. Since B68 is the only
starless core to have its density structure strongly constrained via extinction
mapping, a major uncertainty has been removed from these determinations. All
abundances for B68 are lower than those derived for translucent and cold dense
clouds, but perhaps only significantly for N2H+, NH3, and C3H2. Depletion of CS
toward the extinction peak of B68 is hinted at by the large offset between the
extinction peak and the position of maximum CS line brightness. Abundances
derived here for C18O and N2H+ are consistent with other, recently determined

Summing Planar Diagrams by an Integrable Bootstrap
Correlation functions of matrix-valued fields are not generally known for
massive renormalized field theories. We find the large-N limit of form factors
of the (1+1)-dimensional sigma model with SU(N) X SU(N) symmetry. These form
factors give a correction to the free-field approximation for the N=infinity
Wightman function. The method is a combination of the 1/N-expansion of the
S-matrix and Smirnov's form-factor axioms. We expand the renormalized field in
