    The Gaussian Multiple Access Diamond Channel

    In this paper, we study the capacity of the diamond channel. We focus on the special case where the channel between the source node and the two relay nodes are two separate links with finite capacities and the link from the two relay nodes to the destination node is a Gaussian multiple access channel. We call this model the Gaussian multiple access diamond channel. We first propose an upper bound on the capacity. This upper bound is a single-letterization of an nn-letter upper bound proposed by Traskov and Kramer, and is tighter than the cut-set bound. As for the lower bound, we propose an achievability scheme based on sending correlated codes through the multiple access channel with superposition structure. We then specialize this achievable rate to the Gaussian multiple access diamond channel. Noting the similarity between the upper and lower bounds, we provide sufficient and necessary conditions that a Gaussian multiple access diamond channel has to satisfy such that the proposed upper and lower bounds meet. Thus, for a Gaussian multiple access diamond channel that satisfies these conditions, we have found its capacity.Comment: submitted to IEEE Transactions on Information Theor

    β-catenin ameliorates myocardial infarction by preventing YAP-associated apoptosis

    Objective: To explore whether the effect of β-catenin on MI and MI-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis is YAP-dependent. Methods: The authors established an MI rat model by ligating the anterior descending branch of the left coronary artery, and an MI cell model by treating cardiomyocytes with H2O2. Results: β-catenin downregulation was observed in MI cardiac tissues and in H2O2-treated cardiomyocytes. Lentiviral-CTNNB1 was administered to MI rats to upregulate β-catenin expression in MI cardiac tissue. β-catenin recovery reduced the myocardial infarct area, fibrosis, and apoptotic cell death in MI rats. H2O2 treatment attenuated cell viability and induced cell death in cardiomyocytes, whereas β-catenin overexpression partially reversed these changes. Moreover, H2O2 treatment caused the deactivation of Yes-Associated Protein (YAP), as detected by increased YAP phosphorylation and reduced the nuclear localization of YAP. Upregulation of β-catenin expression reactivated YAP in H2O2-treated cardiomyocytes. Reactivation of YAP was achieved by administration of Mitochonic Acid-5 (MA-5) to H2O2-treated cardiomyocytes, and deactivation of YAP by CIL56 treatment in β-catenin-overexpressing H2O2-treated cardiomyocytes. MA-5 administration increased cell viability and repressed apoptosis in H2O2-treated cardiomyocytes, whereas CIL56 treatment counteracted the effects of β-catenin overexpression on cell survival and apoptosis. Conclusions: The present data indicate that β-catenin and YAP are effective treatment targets for MI, blocking the apoptotic death of cardiomyocytes

    Detection of small single-cycle signals by stochastic resonance using a bistable superconducting quantum interference device

    We propose and experimentally demonstrate detecting small single-cycle and few-cycle signals by using the symmetric double-well potential of a radio frequency superconducting quantum interference device (rf-SQUID). We show that the response of this bistable system to single- and few-cycle signals has a non-monotonic dependence on the noise strength. The response, measured by the probability of transition from initial potential well to the opposite one, becomes maximum when the noise-induced transition rate between the two stable states of the rf-SQUID is comparable to the signal frequency. Comparison to numerical simulations shows that the phenomenon is a manifestation of stochastic resonance.Comment: 5 pages 3 figure

    Effects of brake pressures on stick-slip bifurcation and chaos of the vehicle brake system

    Vibrations and noises induced by vehicle braking at low speeds are problems that have always blocked the development of the automotive industry, which the stick-slip vibrations of brake system are the major reason that causes the vibration and noise. Ref. [19] predicts chaotic stick-slip vibrations by introducing a torsional model. Additionally, in this article, we have established a four degree of freedom torsional braking model under pure braking, which is based on that reference. Since the chaotic stick-slip motions have been found based on a proper friction model through numerical method, from the bifurcation diagram of the relative velocity between the rotor and pad to corresponding brake pressure, we also found the dynamic characteristics of the system changing from doubling periodic bifurcation to chaos just by increasing the brake pressures. Any further numerical study showed that the doubling periodic bifurcation occurs both in stick phase and slip phase, which composed of the upper and lower bifurcation of the global bifurcation diagram. Thus, chaos and periodic motions in it can be identified by calculating Lyapunov exponents with ‘CLDYN’ method. At last, the effects of friction model parameters on bifurcation and chaos were studied, which provides important evidence theoretically showing that the decrease in braking vibrations and noises at low speed and the matching control of braking pressures

    Identification of genes induced by salt stress from Medicago truncatula L. seedlings

    In order to identify genes induced during the salt stress response in barrel medic (Medicago truncatula L) seedlings, a cDNA library by salt stress was constructed  by suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH). Total RNA from 15-day-old seedlings was used as a ‘driver’, and total RNA from seedlings induced by salt was used as a ‘tester’. One hundred and sixty nine clones identified as positive clones by reverse northern dot-blotting resulted in 75 uni-ESTs that comprised of 13 contigs  and 62 singletons. Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) analysis of deduced protein sequences revealed that 35 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) had identity similar to proteins with known function, while 27 could not be annotated at all. Most of the known function sequences were homologous to genes involved in abiotic stress in plants. Among these protein, citrate synthase, ribulose- 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase, chloroplast protein, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase and  chloroplast outer envelope protein are related to photosynthesis; DNA binding/transcription factor, putative AP2/EREBP transcription factor, Cab9 gene, photosystem II polypeptide and calcium-dependent protein kinase play a significant role in signal transduction and transcription regulation; and aldolase and sucrose synthase are interrelated to osmolyte synthesis. Moreover, 5 of the ESTs, similar to genes from other plant species and closely involved in salt stress were isolated from M. truncatula L. They are superoxide dimutase (SOD)-1, gene for copper/zinc superoxide dismutase, cysteine protease, Na+/H+ antiporter and salt overly sensitive 2 (SOS2). To further assess the expression level of salt-induced ESTs, real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis was employed, and the result showed that these genes have significantly increased expression and probably play an important role in the response of plants to salt stress.Key words: Barrel medic (Medicago truncatula L.), suppression subtraction hybridization (SSH), reverse northern dot-blotting, salt stress, real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

    LookinGood^{\pi}: Real-time Person-independent Neural Re-rendering for High-quality Human Performance Capture

    We propose LookinGood^{\pi}, a novel neural re-rendering approach that is aimed to (1) improve the rendering quality of the low-quality reconstructed results from human performance capture system in real-time; (2) improve the generalization ability of the neural rendering network on unseen people. Our key idea is to utilize the rendered image of reconstructed geometry as the guidance to assist the prediction of person-specific details from few reference images, thus enhancing the re-rendered result. In light of this, we design a two-branch network. A coarse branch is designed to fix some artifacts (i.e. holes, noise) and obtain a coarse version of the rendered input, while a detail branch is designed to predict "correct" details from the warped references. The guidance of the rendered image is realized by blending features from two branches effectively in the training of the detail branch, which improves both the warping accuracy and the details' fidelity. We demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods at producing high-fidelity images on unseen people

    Landau-Zener-St\"{u}ckelberg Interference of Microwave Dressed States of a Superconducting Phase Qubit

    We present the first observation of Landau-Zener-St\"{u}ckelberg (LZS) interference of the dressed states arising from an artificial atom, a superconducting phase qubit, interacting with a microwave field. The dependence of LZS interference fringes on various external parameters and the initial state of the qubit agrees quantitatively very well with the theoretical prediction. Such LZS interferometry between the dressed states enables us to control the quantum states of a tetrapartite solid-state system with ease, demonstrating the feasibility of implementing efficient multipartite quantum logic gates with this unique approach.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures To appear in Physical Review B(R

    Citizen Ai: warrior, jester, and middleman

    Ai Weiwei is famous for crossing boundaries, especially the boundary between art and politics. To appreciate the often contradictory nature of Ai’s work, this essay employs multiple narratives: “Ai the Heroic Warrior” who criticizes the Chinese government; “Ai the Court Jester” who plays with the Chinese state and Western media; and “Ai the Middleman” who acts as a broker between China and the West, between young and old people, and between civil society and the state in the PRC. The essay concludes that a fourth narrative can bring together these three stories in a multicoded understanding of Ai’s work: “Ai the Citizen Intellectual” who sometimes works with the state, and at other times against it—but always for the good of China. By comparing Ai’s work with that of other public intellectuals and placing it in the context of debates about civil society, the conclusion argues that “citizen intellectual” also tells us about a broader movement of activists and public intellectuals who are creating a new form of political space in postsocialist China
