    Law, Social Movements, and the Political Economy of Domestic Violence

    This article uses the occasion of the 2013 Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) to review the circumstances by which legal theory and social movement discourse have circumscribed the scope of VAWA and the dominant approach to domestic violence. This article seeks to explore the relationship between domestic violence advocacy and feminist theory, which has functioned as “the ideological reflection of one’s own place in society” with insufficient attention to superstructures. Additionally, it argues for a reexamination of the current domestic violence/criminal justice paradigm and calls for the consideration of economic uncertainty and inequality as a context for gender-based violence. As an epistemology, domestic violence scholarship has fallen behind other fields of study due to its failure to address the structural context of gender-based violence. This article proposes a redefinition of the parameters of domestic violence law and presents new (and provocative) ways to think about law-related interventions to ameliorate gender violence

    An MCMC Approach to Universal Lossy Compression of Analog Sources

    Motivated by the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach to the compression of discrete sources developed by Jalali and Weissman, we propose a lossy compression algorithm for analog sources that relies on a finite reproduction alphabet, which grows with the input length. The algorithm achieves, in an appropriate asymptotic sense, the optimum Shannon theoretic tradeoff between rate and distortion, universally for stationary ergodic continuous amplitude sources. We further propose an MCMC-based algorithm that resorts to a reduced reproduction alphabet when such reduction does not prevent achieving the Shannon limit. The latter algorithm is advantageous due to its reduced complexity and improved rates of convergence when employed on sources with a finite and small optimum reproduction alphabet.Comment: 21 pages, submitted for publicatio

    Congruency sequence effects and previous response times: conflict adaptation or temporal learning?

    In the present study, we followed up on a recent report of two experiments in which the congruency sequence effect-the reduction of the congruency effect after incongruent relative to congruent trials in Stroop-like tasks-was observed without feature repetition or contingency learning confounds. Specifically, we further scrutinized these data to determine the plausibility of a temporal learning account as an alternative to the popular conflict adaptation account. To this end, we employed a linear mixed effects model to investigate the role of previous response time in producing the congruency sequence effect, because previous response time is thought to influence temporal learning. Interestingly, slower previous response times were associated with a reduced current-trial congruency effect, but only when the previous trial was congruent. An adapted version of the parallel episodic processing (PEP) model was able to fit these data if it was additionally assumed that attention "wanders" during different parts of the experiment (e.g., due to fatigue or other factors). Consistent with this assumption, the magnitude of the congruency effect was correlated across small blocks of trials. These findings demonstrate that a temporal learning mechanism provides a plausible account of the congruency sequence effect
