Discovery of Molecular Gas in the Outflow and Tidal Arms around M82
We present the first fully sampled map of 12CO (1-0) emission from M82
covering the entire galaxy. Our map contains a 12 x 15 kpc^2 area. We find that
extraplanar CO emission, previously reported at short distances above the
galactic plane, extends to heights of up to 6 kpc above the disk. Some of this
emission is associated with tidal arms seen in HI, implying either that M82
contained substantial amounts of molecular gas in the outer disk, or that
molecular gas formed after the tidal features. CO emission along the direction
of the outflow extends to distances of 3 kpc above and below the disk. At this
distance, the line is shifted in velocity about 100 km/s, and has the same
sense as the galactic outflow from the central starburst. This implies that

Reconstitution of T cell receptor signaling in ZAP-70-deficient cells by retroviral transduction of the ZAP-70 gene.
A variant of severe combined immunodeficiency syndrome (SCID) with a selective inability to produce CD8 single positive T cells and a signal transduction defect in peripheral CD4+ cells has recently been shown to be the result of mutations in the ZAP-70 gene. T cell receptor (TCR) signaling requires the association of the ZAP-70 protein tyrosine kinase with the TCR complex. Human T cell leukemia virus type I-transformed CD4+ T cell lines were established from ZAP-70-deficient patients and normal controls. ZAP-70 was expressed and appropriately phosphorylated in normal T cell lines after TCR engagement, but was not detected in T cell lines from ZAP-70-deficient patients. To determine whether signaling could be reconstituted, wild-type ZAP-70 was introduced into deficient cells with a ZAP-70 retroviral vector. High titer producer clones expressing ZAP-70 were generated in the Gibbon ape leukemia virus packaging line PG13. After transduction, ZAP-70 was detected at levels equivalent to those observed in normal cells, and was appropriately phosphorylated on tyrosine after receptor engagement. The kinase activity of ZAP-70 in the reconstituted cells was also appropriately upregulated by receptor aggregation. Moreover, normal and transduced cells, but not ZAP-70-deficient cells, were able to mobilize calcium after receptor ligation, indicating that proximal TCR signaling was reconstituted. These results indicate that this form of SCID may be corrected by gene therapy
Noise sensitivity of an atomic velocity sensor
We use Bloch oscillations to accelerate coherently Rubidium atoms. The
variation of the velocity induced by this acceleration is an integer number
times the recoil velocity due to the absorption of one photon. The measurement
of the velocity variation is achieved using two velocity selective Raman
pi-pulses: the first pulse transfers atoms from the hyperfine state 5S1/2 |F=2,
mF=0> to 5S1/2, |F=1, mF = 0> into a narrow velocity class. After the
acceleration of this selected atomic slice, we apply the second Raman pulse to
bring the resonant atoms back to the initial state 5S1/2, |F=2, mF = 0>. The
populations in (F=1 and F=2) are measured separately by using a one-dimensional
time-of-flight technique. To plot the final velocity distribution we repeat
this procedure by scanning the Raman beam frequency of the second pulse. This
two pi-pulses system constitutes then a velocity sensor. Any noise in the
relative phase shift of the Raman beams induces an error in the measured
velocity. In this paper we present a theoretical and an experimental analysis
of this velocity sensor, which take into account the phase fluctuations during
the Raman pulses
Life and Death at the Edge of a Windy Cliff
The survival probability of a particle diffusing in the two dimensional
domain near a ``windy cliff'' at is investigated. The particle dies
upon reaching the edge of the cliff. In addition to diffusion, the particle is
influenced by a steady ``wind shear'' with velocity , \ie, no average bias either toward or away from the cliff.
For this semi-infinite system, the particle survival probability decays with
time as , compared to in the absence of wind. Scaling
descriptions are developed to elucidate this behavior, as well as the survival
probability within a semi-infinite strip of finite width with particle
absorption at . The behavior in the strip geometry can be described in
terms of Taylor diffusion, an approach which accounts for the crossover to the
decay when the width of the strip diverges. Supporting numerical

The equilibrium states of open quantum systems in the strong coupling regime
In this work we investigate the late-time stationary states of open quantum
systems coupled to a thermal reservoir in the strong coupling regime. In
general such systems do not necessarily relax to a Boltzmann distribution if
the coupling to the thermal reservoir is non-vanishing or equivalently if the
relaxation timescales are finite. Using a variety of non-equilibrium formalisms
valid for non-Markovian processes, we show that starting from a product state
of the closed system = system + environment, with the environment in its
thermal state, the open system which results from coarse graining the
environment will evolve towards an equilibrium state at late-times. This state
can be expressed as the reduced state of the closed system thermal state at the
temperature of the environment. For a linear (harmonic) system and environment,
which is exactly solvable, we are able to show in a rigorous way that all
multi-time correlations of the open system evolve towards those of the closed
system thermal state. Multi-time correlations are especially relevant in the
non-Markovian regime, since they cannot be generated by the dynamics of the
single-time correlations. For more general systems, which cannot be exactly
solved, we are able to provide a general proof that all single-time
correlations of the open system evolve to those of the closed system thermal
state, to first order in the relaxation rates. For the special case of a
zero-temperature reservoir, we are able to explicitly construct the reduced
closed system thermal state in terms of the environmental correlations.Comment: 20 pages, 2 figure
The Low CO Content of the Extremely Metal Poor Galaxy I Zw 18
We present sensitive molecular line observations of the metal-poor blue
compact dwarf I Zw 18 obtained with the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer.
These data constrain the CO J=1-0 luminosity within our 300 pc (FWHM) beam to
be L_CO < 1 \times 10^5 K km s^-1 pc^2 (I_CO < 1 K km s^-1), an order of
magnitude lower than previous limits. Although I Zw 18 is starbursting, it has
a CO luminosity similar to or less than nearby low-mass irregulars (e.g. NGC
1569, the SMC, and NGC 6822). There is less CO in I Zw 18 relative to its
B-band luminosity, HI mass, or star formation rate than in spiral or dwarf
starburst galaxies (including the nearby dwarf starburst IC 10). Comparing the
star formation rate to our CO upper limit reveals that unless molecular gas
forms stars much more efficiently in I Zw 18 than in our own galaxy, it must
have a very low CO-to-H_2 ratio, \sim 10^-2 times the Galactic value. We detect
3mm continuum emission, presumably due to thermal dust and free-free emission,

Women’s Perceptions of Caesarean Birth: A Roy International Study
The purpose of this Roy adaptation model-based multi-site international mixed method study was to examine the relations of type of caesarean birth (unplanned/planned), number of caesarean births (primary/repeat), and preparation for caesarean birth to women’s perceptions of and responses to caesarean birth. The sample included 488 women from the United States (n = 253), Finland (n = 213), and Australia (n = 22). Path analysis revealed direct effects for type of and preparation for caesarean birth on responses to caesarean birth, and an indirect effect for preparation on responses to caesarean birth through perception of birth the experience
