Gambling Behaviors of Former Athletes: The Delayed Competitive Effect
Gambling behaviors in current athletes, former athletes and non-athletes were examined. Gambling tendencies were determined from participants\u27 responses on the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS). A delayed competitive effect among athletes that might surface in the form of pathological gambling was investigated. To test this novel theory, participants were divided into three groups: athletes who are currently playing sports, former athletes who used to play competitive sports and non-athletes who have never participated in competitive sporting events. A 2 x 3 independent groups AN OVA was utilized comparing SOGS scores across gender and athletic status. The mean score for former athletes on the SOGS was significantly higher than for both current athletes and non-athletes as was the frequency of those classified as probable pathological gamblers suggesting the possibility that a delayed competitive effect might exist among former athletes. Additionally, a higher percentage of former athletes were involved in sports gambling
The Feasibility of a Computer-Based Library Reference Interview
The feasibility of a computer-based library reference interview is forecasted through an analysis of the literature concerned with primary aspects of the library reference interview, concept formation, computer concept formation, computerization of reference service and the future of reference service. The state of the art is discussed in light of specific computer programs currently available for the automation of library reference service. Factors supporting and limiting the automation of library reference service are presented. Conclusions and recommendations are made for the realization of a computer-based library reference interview
A topology on the union of the double arrow space and the integers
AbstractWe construct a topology on the union of the double arrow space (Cantor set version) and the integers which is a hereditarily Lindelöf hereditarily separable 0-dimensional compact Hausdorff space but not the continuous image of a closed subspace of the product of the double arrow space and the closed unit interval (answering a question of Fremlin)
Developmental ECM Sculpting: Laying It Down and Cutting It Up
In mammals, proteolytic remodeling of the embryonic extracellular matrix (ECM) controls morphogenesis, but the key players remain elusive. Two recent reports identify new roles for metalloproteinases belonging to the MT-MMP and ADAMTS families in branching morphogenesis and interdigital web regression

Psychosocial Effects of a Holistic Ayurvedic Approach to Well-being in Health and Wellness Courses.
BackgroundAs individuals are increasingly attending health and wellness courses outside of the conventional medical system, there is a need to obtain objective data on the effects of those programs on well-being.MethodsIn total, 154 men and women (mean age 54.7 years; range 25-83) participated in 3 different holistic wellness programs based on Ayurvedic Medicine principles (Seduction of Spirit, Journey into Healing, and Perfect Health) or a vacation control group. Psychosocial outcomes included spirituality (Delaney Spirituality Scale), mindful awareness (Mindful Attention Awareness Scale), psychological flexibility (Acceptance and Action Questionnaire), mood (Center for Epidemiology Studies-Depression), and anxiety (Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement System Anxiety Scale).ResultsParticipants in the Seduction of Spirit (Pâ<â.004), Journey into Healing (Pâ<â.05), and Perfect Health (Pâ<â.004) courses showed significant increases in spirituality as compared to vacation controls. Participants in Seduction of Spirit (Pâ<â.007) also showed significant increases in mindfulness as compared to vacation controls. Participants in the Seduction of Spirit (Pâ<â.001) and Journey into Healing (Pâ<â.05) courses showed significant decreases in depressed mood as compared to those in the Perfect Health and vacation control groups. All study participants showed similar increases in psychological flexibility (Pâ<â.01) and decreases in anxiety (Pâ<â.01).ConclusionParticipation in wellness courses that incorporate a mind-body-spirit approach to health improves multiple domains of psychosocial well-being, which persists even after course participation
Progressive = Permissive? Not According to John DeweyâŠSubjects Matter!
The progressive education movement, which promoted the philosophy of school reform that prevailed among waves of educational innovators throughout the 20th century, has been associated historically with John Dewey and has prided itself on implementing his âchildcenteredâ principles. However, there were major differences between many of the progressivesâ attitudes and Deweyâs ideas about learning. To better understand why issues that originally separated Dewey from other progressives continue to be a source of conflict and confusion even today, as exemplified by an article that appeared in an edition of Education Week (Spencer, 2001; Weiner, 2001), this paper examines the philosophy and practices of some significant early progressive thinkers in light of Deweyâs theory of experience
Complex collective states in a one-dimensional two-atom system
We consider a pair of identical two-level atoms interacting with a scalar
field in one dimension, separated by a distance . We restrict our
attention to states where one atom is excited and the other is in the ground
state, in symmetric or anti-symmetric combinations. We obtain exact collective
decaying states, belonging to a complex spectral representation of the
Hamiltonian. The imaginary parts of the eigenvalues give the decay rates, and
the real parts give the average energy of the collective states. In one
dimension there is strong interference between the fields emitted by the atoms,
leading to long-range cooperative effects. The decay rates and the energy
oscillate with the distance . Depending on , the decay rates
will either decrease, vanish or increase as compared with the one-atom decay
rate. We have sub- and super-radiance at periodic intervals. Our model may be
used to study two-cavity electron wave-guides. The vanishing of the collective
decay rates then suggests the possibility of obtaining stable configurations,
where an electron is trapped inside the two cavities.Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Large Dog Relinquishment to Two Municipal Facilities in New York City and Washington, D.C.: Identifying Targets for Intervention
While the overall trend in euthanasia has been decreasing nationally, large dogs are at a higher risk of euthanasia than other sized dogs in most animal shelters in the United States. We hypothesized one way to increase the lives saved with respect to these large dogs is to keep them home when possible. In order to develop solutions to decrease relinquishment, a survey was developed to learn more about the reasons owners relinquish large dogs. The survey was administered to owners relinquishing their dogs at two large municipal facilities, one in New York City and one in Washington, D.C. There were 157 responses between the two facilities. We found both significant similarities and differences between respondents and their dogs from the two cities. We identified opportunities to potentially support future relinquishers and found that targets for interventions are likely different in each community

Environments to support collaborative software engineering
With increasing globalisation of software production, widespread use of
software components, and the need to maintain software systems over long
periods of time, there has been a recognition that better support
for collaborative working is needed by software engineers.
In this paper, two approaches to developing
improved system support for collaborative software engineering are
described: GENESIS and OPHELIA.
As both projects are moving towards industrial trials and eventual publicreleases of their systems, this exercise of comparing and
contrasting our approaches has provided the basis for future
collaboration between our projects particularly in carrying out
comparative studies of our approaches in practical use
