Evidence for Accretion in the High-resolution X-ray Spectrum of the T Tauri Star System Hen 3-600
We present high-resolution X-ray spectra of the multiple T Tauri star system
Hen 3-600, obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrograph on
the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Two binary components were detected in the
zeroth-order image. Hen 3-600-A, which has a large mid-infrared excess, is a
2-3 times fainter in X-rays than Hen 3-600-B, due to a large flare on B. The
dispersed X-ray spectra of the two primary components overlap spatially;
spectral analysis was performed on the combined system. Analysis of the
individual spectra was limited to regions where the contributions of A and B
can be disentangled. This analysis results in two lines of evidence indicating
that the X-ray emission from Hen 3-600 is derived from accretion processes:
line ratios of O VII indicate that the characteristic density of its
X-ray-emitting plasma is large; a significant component of low-temperature
plasma is present and is stronger in component A. These results are consistent
with results obtained from X-ray gratings spectroscopy of more rapidly
accreting systems. All of the signatures of Hen 3-600 that are potential
diagnostics of accretion activity -- X-ray emission, UV excess, H-alpha
emission, and weak infrared excess -- suggest that its components represent a
transition phase between rapidly accreting, classical T Tauri stars and

Infrared Space Observatory Polarimetric Imaging of the Egg Nebula (RAFGL 2688)
We present polarimetric imaging of the protoplanetary nebula RAFGL 2688
obtained at 4.5 microns with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). We have
deconvolved the images to remove the signature of the point spread function of
the ISO telescope, to the extent possible. The deconvolved 4.5 micron image and
polarimetric map reveal a bright point source with faint, surrounding
reflection nebulosity. The reflection nebula is brightest to the
north-northeast, in agreement with previous ground- and space-based infrared
imaging. Comparison with previous near-infrared polarimetric imaging suggests
that the polarization of starlight induced by the dust grains in RAFGL 2688 is
more or less independent of wavelength between 2 microns and 4.5 microns. This,
in turn, indicates that scattering dominates over thermal emission at
wavelengths as long as ~5 microns, and that the dust grains have characteristic

Dispersal of aphids, whiteflies and their natural enemies under photoselective nets
Integrated Pest Management of insects includes several control tactics, such as the use of photoselective nets, which may reduce the flight activity of insects. Limiting the dispersal of pests such as aphids and whiteflies is important because of their major role as vectors of plant viruses, while a minor impact on natural enemies is desired. In this study, we examined for the first time the dispersal ability of three vector species, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), in cages covered with photoselective nets. Contrary to the results obtained with aphids, the ability of the whitefly B. tabaci, to reach the target plant was reduced by photoselective nets. In a second set of experiments, the impact of UV-absorbing nets on the visual cues of two important predator species, Orius laevigatus (Fieber) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) and Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot (Acari: Phytoseiidae), was evaluated. The anthocorid was caught in higher numbers in traps placed under regular nets, whereas the mites preferably chose environments in which the UV radiation was attenuated. We have observed a wide range of effects that impedes generalization, although photoselective nets have a positive effect on pest management of whiteflies and aphids under protected environments
Quiescent H2 Emission From Pre-Main Sequence Stars in Chamaeleon I
We report the discovery of quiescent emission from molecular hydrogen gas
located in the circumstellar disks of six pre-main sequence stars, including
two weak-line T Tauri stars (TTS), and one Herbig AeBe star, in the Chamaeleon
I star forming region. For two of these stars, we also place upper limits on
the 2->1 S(1)/1->0 S(1) line ratios of 0.4 and 0.5. Of the 11 pre-main sequence
sources now known to be sources of quiescent near-infrared hydrogen emission,
four possess transitional disks, which suggests that detectable levels of H
emission and the presence of inner disk holes are correlated. These H
detections demonstrate that these inner holes are not completely devoid of gas,
in agreement with the presence of observable accretion signatures for all four
of these stars and the recent detections of [Ne II] emission from three of
them. The overlap in [Ne II] and H detections hints at a possible
correlation between these two features and suggests a shared excitation
mechanism of high energy photons. Our models, combined with the kinematic
information from the H lines, locate the bulk of the emitting gas at a few
tens of AU from the stars. We also find a correlation between H detections
and those targets which possess the largest H equivalent widths,
suggesting a link between accretion activity and quiescent H emission. We
conclude that quiescent H emission from relatively hot gas within the disks
of TTS is most likely related to on-going accretion activity, the production of
UV photons and/or X-rays, and the evolutionary status of the dust grain

Discovery of shocked H2 around OH 231.8+4.2
We present K-band integral field observations of the circumstellar envelope
of the evolved star OH 231.8+4.2. Spatial and spectral information were
simultaneously acquired using the Sinfoni integral field unit, with adaptive
optics, on the Very Large Telescope. The observations reveal the discovery of
H2 emission (1) around the centre of the nebula and (2) located in clumps along
the Western side of the Northern lobe, presumably associated with the strong
shocks that stimulate the previously reported H-alpha emission at the same
location. An observed H2 1-0/2-1S(1) line ratio of 8.3+/-1.9 was calculated for

Safety profile of statins alone or combined with ezetimibe : a pooled analysis of 27 studies including over 22,000 patients treated for 6-24 weeks
Aims:  The aim of this analysis was to assess the overall safety and tolerability profiles of various statins + ezetimibe vs. statin monotherapy and to explore tolerability in sub-populations grouped by age, race, and sex. Methods:  Study-level data were combined from 27 double-blind, placebo-controlled or active-comparator trials that randomized adult hypercholesterolemic patients to statin or statin + ezetimibe for 6-24 weeks. In the full cohort, % patients with AEs within treatment groups (statin: N = 10,517; statin + ezetimibe: N = 11,714) was assessed by logistic regression with terms for first-/second-line therapy (first line = drug-naïve or rendered drug-naïve by washout at study entry; second line = ongoing statin at study entry or statin run-in), trial within first-/second-line therapy, and treatment. The same model was fitted for age (< 65, ≥ 65 years), sex, race (white, black, other) and first-/second-line subgroups with additional terms for subgroup and subgroup-by-treatment interaction. Results:  In the full cohort, the only significant difference between treatments was consecutive AST or ALT elevations ≥ 3 × upper limit of normal (ULN) (statin: 0.35%, statin + ezetimibe: 0.56%; p = 0.017). Significantly more subjects reported ≥ 1 AE; drug-related, hepatitis-related and gastrointestinal-related AEs; and CK elevations ≥ 10 × ULN (all p ≤ 0.008) in first-line vs. second-line therapy studies with both treatments. AEs were generally similar between treatments in subgroups, and similar rates of AEs were reported within age and race subgroups; however, women reported generally higher AE rates. Conclusions:  In conclusion, in second-line studies, ongoing statin treatment at study entry likely screened out participants for previous statin-related AEs and tolerability issues. These results describe the safety profiles of widely used lipid-lowering therapies and encourage their appropriate and judicious use in certain subpopulations
Antibiotic resistance patterns of Escherichia coli isolates from different aquatic environmental sources in Leon, Nicaragua
AbstractAntibiotic-resistant bacteria have emerged due to the selective pressure of antimicrobial use in humans and animals. Water plays an important role in dissemination of these organisms among humans, animals and the environment. We studied the antibiotic resistance patterns among 493 Escherichia col/isolates from different aquatic environmental sources collected from October 2008 to May 2009 in Leon, Nicaragua. High levels of antibiotic resistance were found in E. coli isolates in hospital sewage water and in eight of 87 well-water samples. Among the resistant isolates from the hospital sewage, ampicillin, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, nalidixic acid, trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole was the most common multi-resistance profile. Among the resistant isolates from the wells, 19% were resistant to ampicillin, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, cefotaxime, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, nalidixic acid and trimethoprim-sulphameth-oxazole. E. coli producing ESBL and harbouring blaCTX-M genes were detected in one of the hospital sewage samples and in 26% of the resistant isolates from the well-water samples. The blaCTX-M-9 group was more prevalent in E. coli isolates from the hospital sewage samples and the blaCTX-M-1 group was more prevalent in the well-water samples
