Fine-Structure FeII* Emission and Resonant MgII Emission in z = 1 Star-Forming Galaxies
We present a study of the prevalence, strength, and kinematics of ultraviolet
FeII and MgII emission lines in 212 star-forming galaxies at z = 1 selected
from the DEEP2 survey. We find FeII* emission in composite spectra assembled on
the basis of different galaxy properties, indicating that FeII* emission is
prevalent at z = 1. In these composites, FeII* emission is observed at roughly
the systemic velocity. At z = 1, we find that the strength of FeII* emission is
most strongly modulated by dust attenuation, and is additionally correlated
with redshift, star-formation rate, and [OII] equivalent width, such that
systems at higher redshifts with lower dust levels, lower star-formation rates,
and larger [OII] equivalent widths show stronger FeII* emission. We detect MgII
emission in at least 15% of the individual spectra and we find that objects
showing stronger MgII emission have higher specific star-formation rates,
smaller [OII] linewidths, larger [OII] equivalent widths, lower dust
attenuations, and lower stellar masses than the sample as a whole. MgII
emission strength exhibits the strongest correlation with specific
star-formation rate, although we find evidence that dust attenuation and
stellar mass also play roles in the regulation of MgII emission. Future
integral field unit observations of the spatial extent of FeII* and MgII
emission in galaxies with high specific star-formation rates, low dust
attenuations, and low stellar masses will be important for probing the

Likelihood of Using Drug Courts: Predictions Using Procedural Justice and the Theory of Planned Behavior
The current research compares two theoretical models borrowed from social psychology (theory of planned behavior and procedural justice) to predict intentions to make use of a drug court. Medicaid-eligible substance users answered a number of questions regarding their intentions to use a drug court in the future, including items from planned behavior and procedural justice scales. When procedural justice was considered alone, only trustworthiness predicted intention to use drug courts. When planned behavior was considered alone, only deliberative attitudes predicted the intention. After combining the two models, deliberative attitudes from the theory of planned behavior were the only significant predictor of likelihood to make use of a drug court. Recommendations for future study of this area center on conceptualization of procedural justice and the use of alternative samples
Oral Tolerance: Therapeutic Implications for Autoimmune Diseases
Oral tolerance is classically defined as the suppression of immune responses to antigens (Ag) that have been administered previously by the oral route. Multiple mechanisms of tolerance are induced by oral Ag. Low doses favor active suppression, whereas higher doses favor clonal anergy/deletion. Oral Ag induces Th2 (IL-4/IL-10) and Th3 (TGF-β) regulatory T cells (Tregs) plus CD4+CD25+ regulatory cells and LAP+T cells. Induction of oral tolerance is enhanced by IL-4, IL-10, anti-IL-12, TGF-β, cholera toxin B subunit (CTB), Flt-3 ligand, anti-CD40 ligand and continuous feeding of Ag. In addition to oral tolerance, nasal tolerance has also been shown to be effective in suppressing inflammatory conditions with the advantage of a lower dose requirement. Oral and nasal tolerance suppress several animal models of autoimmune diseases including experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE), uveitis, thyroiditis, myasthenia, arthritis and diabetes in the nonobese diabetic (NOD) mouse, plus non-autoimmune diseases such as asthma, atherosclerosis, colitis and stroke. Oral tolerance has been tested in human autoimmune diseases including MS, arthritis, uveitis and diabetes and in allergy, contact sensitivity to DNCB, nickel allergy. Positive results have been observed in phase II trials and new trials for arthritis, MS and diabetes are underway. Mucosal tolerance is an attractive approach for treatment of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases because of lack of toxicity, ease of administration over time and Ag-specific mechanism of action. The successful application of oral tolerance for the treatment of human diseases will depend on dose, developing immune markers to assess immunologic effects, route (nasal versus oral), formulation, mucosal adjuvants, combination therapy and early therapy
Deciphering nonfemtoscopic two-pion correlations in collisions with simple analytical models
A simple model of nonfemtoscopic particle correlations in proton-proton
collisions is proposed. The model takes into account correlations induced by
the conservation laws as well as correlations induced by minijets. It
reproduces well the two-pion nonfemtoscopic correlations of like-sign and
unlike-sign pions in proton-proton collision events at GeV
analyzed by the ALICE Collaboration. We also argue that similar nonfemtoscopic
correlations can appear in the hydrodynamic picture with event-by-event
fluctuating nonsymmetric initial conditions that are typically associated with

A mean field description of jamming in non-cohesive frictionless particulate systems
A theory for kinetic arrest in isotropic systems of repulsive,
radially-interacting particles is presented that predicts exponents for the
scaling of various macroscopic quantities near the rigidity transition that are
in agreement with simulations, including the non-trivial shear exponent. Both
statics and dynamics are treated in a simplified, one-particle level
description, and coupled via the assumption that kinetic arrest occurs on the
boundary between mechanically stable and unstable regions of the static
parameter diagram. This suggests the arrested states observed in simulations
are at (or near) an elastic buckling transition. Some additional numerical

Surface wave generation and propagation on metallic subwavelength structures measured by far-field interferometry
Transmission spectra of metallic films or membranes perforated by arrays of
subwavelength slits or holes have been widely interpreted as resonance
absorption by surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Alternative interpretations
involving evanescent waves diffracted on the surface have also been proposed.
These two approaches lead to divergent predictions for some surface wave
properties. Using far-field interferometry, we have carried out a series of
measurements on elementary one-dimensional (1-D) subwavelength structures with
the aim of testing key properties of the surface waves and comparing them to
predictions of these two points of view
Bounds for Bose-Einstein Correlation Functions
Bounds for the correlation functions of identical bosons are discussed for
the general case of a Gaussian density matrix. In particular, for a purely
chaotic system the two-particle correlation function must always be greater
than one. On the other hand, in the presence of a coherent component the
correlation function may take values below unity. The experimental situation is

Second order equation of motion for electromagnetic radiation back-reaction
We take the viewpoint that the physically acceptable solutions of the
Lorentz--Dirac equation for radiation back-reaction are actually determined by
a second order equation of motion, the self-force being given as a function of
spacetime location and velocity. We propose three different methods to obtain
this self-force function. For two example systems, we determine the second
order equation of motion exactly in the nonrelativistic regime via each of
these three methods, the three methods leading to the same result. We reveal
that, for both systems considered, back-reaction induces a damping proportional
to velocity and, in addition, it decreases the effect of the external force.Comment: 13 page
Bringing Salary Transparency to the World: Computing Robust Compensation Insights via LinkedIn Salary
The recently launched LinkedIn Salary product has been designed with the goal
of providing compensation insights to the world's professionals and thereby
helping them optimize their earning potential. We describe the overall design
and architecture of the statistical modeling system underlying this product. We
focus on the unique data mining challenges while designing and implementing the
system, and describe the modeling components such as Bayesian hierarchical
smoothing that help to compute and present robust compensation insights to
users. We report on extensive evaluation with nearly one year of de-identified
compensation data collected from over one million LinkedIn users, thereby
demonstrating the efficacy of the statistical models. We also highlight the

Biomarkers of Tuberculosis Severity and Treatment Effect: A Directed Screen of 70 Host Markers in a Randomized Clinical Trial.
More efficacious treatment regimens are needed for tuberculosis, however, drug development is impeded by a lack of reliable biomarkers of disease severity and of treatment effect. We conducted a directed screen of host biomarkers in participants enrolled in a tuberculosis clinical trial to address this need. Serum samples from 319 protocol-correct, culture-confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis patients treated under direct observation as part of an international, phase 2 trial were screened for 70 markers of infection, inflammation, and metabolism. Biomarker assays were specifically developed for this study and quantified using a novel, multiplexed electrochemiluminescence assay. We evaluated the association of biomarkers with baseline characteristics, as well as with detailed microbiologic data, using Bonferroni-adjusted, linear regression models. Across numerous analyses, seven proteins, SAA1, PCT, IL-1β, IL-6, CRP, PTX-3 and MMP-8, showed recurring strong associations with markers of baseline disease severity, smear grade and cavitation; were strongly modulated by tuberculosis treatment; and had responses that were greater for patients who culture-converted at 8weeks. With treatment, all proteins decreased, except for osteocalcin, MCP-1 and MCP-4, which significantly increased. Several previously reported putative tuberculosis-associated biomarkers (HOMX1, neopterin, and cathelicidin) were not significantly associated with treatment response. In conclusion, across a geographically diverse and large population of tuberculosis patients enrolled in a clinical trial, several previously reported putative biomarkers were not significantly associated with treatment response, however, seven proteins had recurring strong associations with baseline radiographic and microbiologic measures of disease severity, as well as with early treatment response, deserving additional study
