Density of States in Landau Level Tails of GaAs-AlxGa1-xAs Heterostructures
From an analysis of the thermally activated resistivity as a function of the magnetic field in the quantum Hall regime we deduced the position of the Fermi energy in the mobility gap as a function of the filling factor and therefore the density of states. The measured density of states is best described by a Gaussian like profile superimposed on a constant background
An O(n^3)-Time Algorithm for Tree Edit Distance
The {\em edit distance} between two ordered trees with vertex labels is the
minimum cost of transforming one tree into the other by a sequence of
elementary operations consisting of deleting and relabeling existing nodes, as
well as inserting new nodes. In this paper, we present a worst-case
-time algorithm for this problem, improving the previous best
-time algorithm~\cite{Klein}. Our result requires a novel
adaptive strategy for deciding how a dynamic program divides into subproblems
(which is interesting in its own right), together with a deeper understanding
of the previous algorithms for the problem. We also prove the optimality of our
algorithm among the family of \emph{decomposition strategy} algorithms--which
also includes the previous fastest algorithms--by tightening the known lower
bound of ~\cite{Touzet} to , matching our

Riociguat for the treatment of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.
BACKGROUND: Riociguat, a member of a new class of compounds (soluble guanylate cyclase stimulators), has been shown in previous clinical studies to be beneficial in the treatment of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. METHODS: In this phase 3, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, we randomly assigned 261 patients with inoperable chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension or persistent or recurrent pulmonary hypertension after pulmonary endarterectomy to receive placebo or riociguat. The primary end point was the change from baseline to the end of week 16 in the distance walked in 6 minutes. Secondary end points included changes from baseline in pulmonary vascular resistance, N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) level, World Health Organization (WHO) functional class, time to clinical worsening, Borg dyspnea score, quality-of-life variables, and safety. RESULTS: By week 16, the 6-minute walk distance had increased by a mean of 39 m in the riociguat group, as compared with a mean decrease of 6 m in the placebo group (least-squares mean difference, 46 m; 95% confidence interval [CI], 25 to 67; P<0.001). Pulmonary vascular resistance decreased by 226 dyn · sec · cm-5in the riociguat group and increased by 23 dyn · sec · cm-5in the placebo group (least-squares mean difference, -246 dyn · sec · cm-5; 95% CI, -303 to -190; P<0.001). Riociguat was also associated with significant improvements in the NT-proBNP level (P<0.001) and WHO functional class (P = 0.003). The most common serious adverse events were right ventricular failure (in 3% of patients in each group) and syncope (in 2% of the riociguat group and in 3% of the placebo group). CONCLUSIONS: Riociguat significantly improved exercise capacity and pulmonary vascular resistance in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. Participatory Militias: An Analysis of an Armed Movement's Online Audience
Armed groups of civilians known as "self-defense forces" have ousted the
powerful Knights Templar drug cartel from several towns in Michoacan. This
militia uprising has unfolded on social media, particularly in the "VXM"
("Valor por Michoacan," Spanish for "Courage for Michoacan") Facebook page,
gathering more than 170,000 fans. Previous work on the Drug War has documented
the use of social media for real-time reports of violent clashes. However, VXM
goes one step further by taking on a pro-militia propagandist role, engaging in
two-way communication with its audience. This paper presents a descriptive
analysis of VXM and its audience. We examined nine months of posts, from VXM's
inception until May 2014, totaling 6,000 posts by VXM administrators and more
than 108,000 comments from its audience. We describe the main conversation
themes, post frequency and relationships with offline events and public
figures. We also characterize the behavior of VXM's most active audience
members. Our work illustrates VXM's online mobilization strategies, and how its
audience takes part in defining the narrative of this armed conflict. We
conclude by discussing possible applications of our findings for the design of

Проведен анализ состояния проблемы формирования предпринимательских умений в России. Определены педагогические условия, способствующие формированию готовности студентов технического университета к комплексной инженерной деятельности. Сформулировано понятие предпринимательской компетенции инженера. Обосновано эффективное применение метода проектов для формирования предпринимательских умений студентов инженерного вуза. Представлена модель формирования предпринимательских умений студентов инженерного вуза с учетом проектной деятельности инженера.The developing methods of entrepreneurial competences of engineering students, based on the practice-oriented training to encourage an implemental activity of an engineer in the modern context has been presented in the report. The analysis of the problem of entrepreneurial competencies development in Russia has been carried out. The pedagogical conditions encouraging the commitment of the technical university students for an integrated engineering activity has been defined. The concept of entrepreneurial competencies of an engineer has been stated. An effective appliance of project methods to develop entrepreneurial competences of the engineering university students has been proved. Generation of energy selective excitations in quantum Hall edge states
We operate an on-demand source of single electrons in high perpendicular
magnetic fields up to 30T, corresponding to a filling factor below 1/3. The
device extracts and emits single charges at a tunable energy from and to a
two-dimensional electron gas, brought into well defined integer and fractional
quantum Hall (QH) states. It can therefore be used for sensitive electrical
transport studies, e.g. of excitations and relaxation processes in QH edge
states
UK science press officers, professional vision and the generation of expectations
Science press officers can play an integral role in helping promote expectations and hype about biomedical research. Using this as a starting point, this article draws on interviews with 10 UK-based science press officers, which explored how they view their role as science reporters and as generators of expectations. Using Goodwin’s notion of ‘professional vision’, we argue that science press officers have a specific professional vision that shapes how they produce biomedical press releases, engage in promotion of biomedical research and make sense of hype. We discuss how these insights can contribute to the sociology of expectations, as well as inform responsible science communication.This project was funded by the Wellcome Trust (Wellcome Trust Biomedical Strategic Award 086034)
The regulation of miRNAs by reconstituted high-density lipoproteins in diabetes-impaired angiogenesis
Diabetic vascular complications are associated with impaired ischaemia-driven angiogenesis. We recently found that reconstituted high-density lipoproteins (rHDL) rescue diabetes-impaired angiogenesis. microRNAs (miRNAs) regulate angiogenesis and are transported within HDL to sites of injury/repair. The role of miRNAs in the rescue of diabetes-impaired angiogenesis by rHDL is unknown. Using a miRNA array, we found that rHDL inhibits hsa-miR-181c-5p expression in vitro and using a hsa-miR-181c-5p mimic and antimiR identify a novel anti-angiogenic role for miR-181c-5p. miRNA expression was tracked over time post-hindlimb ischaemic induction in diabetic mice. Early post-ischaemia when angiogenesis is important, rHDL suppressed hindlimb mmu-miR-181c-5p. mmu-miR-181c-5p was not detected in the plasma or within HDL, suggesting rHDL specifically targets mmu-miR-181c-5p at the ischaemic site. Three known angiogenic miRNAs (mmu-miR-223-3p, mmu-miR-27b-3p, mmu-miR-92a-3p) were elevated in the HDL fraction of diabetic rHDL-infused mice early post-ischaemia. This was accompanied by a decrease in plasma levels. Only mmu-miR-223-3p levels were elevated in the hindlimb 3 days post-ischaemia, indicating that rHDL regulates mmu-miR-223-3p in a time-dependent and site-specific manner. The early regulation of miRNAs, particularly miR-181c-5p, may underpin the rescue of diabetes-impaired angiogenesis by rHDL and has implications for the treatment of diabetes-related vascular complications
Tackling the climate targets set by the Paris Agreement (COP 21): Green leadership empowers public hospitals to overcome obstacles and challenges in a resourceconstrained environment
The healthcare sector itself contributes to climate change, the creation of hazardous waste, use of toxic metals such as mercury, and water and air pollution. To mitigate the effect of healthcare provision on the deteriorating environment and avoid creating further challenges for already burdened health systems, Global Green Hospitals was formed as a global network. Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH), as the leading academic hospital in Africa, joined the network in 2014. Since then, several projects have been initiated to reduce the amount of general waste, energy consumption and food waste, and create an environmentally friendlier and more sustainable hospital in a resourceconstrained public healthcare setting. We outline the various efforts made to reduce the carbon footprint of GSH and reduce waste and hazardous substances such as mercury and polystyrene, and elaborate how obstacles and resistance to change were overcome. The hospital was able to halve the amount of coal and water used, increase recycling by 50% over 6 months, replace polystyrene cups and packaging with Forest Stewardship Council recyclable paper-based products, reduce the effect of food wastage by making use of local farmers, and implement measures to reduce the amount of expired pharmaceutical drugs. To improve commitment from all involved roleplayers, political leadership, supportive government policies and financial funding is mandatory, or public hospitals will be unable to tackle the exponentially increasing costs related to climate change and its effects on healthcare
