    ā€˜Guitars with Ambisonic Spatial Performanceā€™ (GASP) is an ongoing project where our expertise in surround sound algorithmic research is combined with off-the-shelf hardware and bespoke software to create a spatial multichannel surround guitar performance system. This poster was funded through the ā€˜Undergraduate Research Scholarship Schemeā€™ (URSS) and presented at the University of Derby Buxton Campus 10th Annual Learning & Teaching conference on Wednesday 1st July 2015. The theme being ā€˜Students as Partners: Linking Teaching, Research and Enterpriseā€™.     A multi-robot platform for the autonomous operation and maintenance of offshore wind farms

    With the increasing scale of offshore wind farm development, maintaining farms efficiently and safely becomes a necessity. The length of turbine downtime and the logistics for human technician transfer make up a significant proportion of the operation and maintenance (O&M) costs. To reduce such costs, future O&M infrastructures will increasingly rely on offshore autonomous robotic solutions that are capable of co-managing wind farms with human operators located onshore. In particular, unmanned aerial vehicles, autonomous surface vessels and crawling robots are expected to play important roles not only to bring down costs but also to significantly reduce the health and safety risks by assisting (or replacing) human operators in performing the most hazardous tasks. This paper portrays a visionary view in which heterogeneous robotic assets, underpinned by AI agent technology, coordinate their behavior to autonomously inspect, maintain and repair offshore wind farms over long periods of time and unstable weather conditions. They cooperate with onshore human operators, who supervise the mission at a distance, via the use of shared deliberation techniques. We highlight several challenging research directions in this context and offer ambitious ideas to tackle them as well as initial solutions

    Development of a recA gene-based identification approach for the the entire Burkholderia genus

    Burkholderia is an important bacterial genus containing species of ecological, biotechnological, and pathogenic interest. With their taxonomy undergoing constant revision and the phenotypic similarity of several species, correct identification of Burkholderia is difficult. A genetic scheme based on the recA gene has greatly enhanced the identification of Burkholderia cepacia complex species. However, the PCR developed for the latter approach was limited by its specificity for the complex. By alignment of existing and novel Burkholderia recA sequences, we designed new PCR primers and evaluated their specificity by testing a representative panel of Burkholderia strains. PCR followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of an 869-bp portion of the Burkholderia recA gene was not sufficiently discriminatory. Nucleotide sequencing followed by phylogenetic analysis of this recA fragment differentiated both putative and known Burkholderia species and all members of the B. cepacia complex. In addition, it enabled the design of a Burkholderia genus-specific recA PCR that produced a 385-bp amplicon, the sequence of which was also able to discriminate all species examined. Phylogenetic analysis of 188 novel recA genes enabled clarification of the taxonomic position of several important Burkholderia strains and revealed the presence of four novel B. cepacia complex recA lineages. Although the recA phylogeny could not be used as a means to differentiate B. cepacia complex strains recovered from clinical infection versus the natural environment, it did facilitate the identification of clonal strain types of B. cepacia, B. stabilis, and B. ambifaria capable of residing in both niches

    Effect of aprotinin on clinical outcomes in coronary artery bypass graft surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials.

    OBJECTIVE: Despite proven blood transfusion benefits, aprotinin may be underused in coronary artery bypass grafting. Reluctance to use aprotinin may stem from safety concerns. The current objective was to evaluate clinical outcomes (mortality, myocardial infarction, renal failure, stroke, atrial fibrillation) in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting who receive aprotinin by performing a quantitative overview of published, randomized, controlled trials. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PHARMLINE (1988-2001) and reference lists of relevant articles were searched for coronary artery bypass grafting studies. Criteria for data inclusion were as follows: (1) random allocation of study treatments, (2) placebo control, (3) enrollment only of patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting, (4) no combination with another experimental medication or device, and (5) prophylactic and continuous intraoperative use. RESULTS: Data from 35 coronary artery bypass grafting trials (n = 3879) confirm that aprotinin reduces transfusion requirements (relative risk 0.61, 95% confidence interval 0.58-0.66) relative to placebo, with a 39% risk reduction. Aprotinin therapy was not associated with increased or decreased mortality (relative risk 0.96, 95% confidence interval 0.65-1.40), myocardial infarction (relative risk 0.85, 95% confidence interval 0.63-1.14), or renal failure (relative risk 1.01, 95% confidence interval 0.55-1.83) risk, but it was associated with a reduced risk of stroke (relative risk 0.53, 95% confidence interval 0.31-0.90) and a trend toward reduced atrial fibrillation (relative risk 0.90, 95% confidence interval 0.78-1.03). CONCLUSIONS: Aprotinin reduces transfusion requirements. Concerns that aprotinin therapy is associated with increased mortality, myocardial infarction, or renal failure risk is not supported by data from published, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials. Evidence for a reduced risk of stroke and a tendency toward reduction of atrial fibrillation occurrence was observed in patients who received aprotinin

    The genesis of the electricity supply industry in Britain: A case study of NESCo from 1889 to 1914

    A study of the Newcastle upon Tyne Electric Supply Company (NESCo) provides a micro-history of the emergence of the electricity supply industry in Britain up to the First World War. This research examines the role of social capital in the establishment and growth of NESCo, the only financially successful British electric power company. Temporal bracketing was adopted to evaluate two distinct time periods: emergence from 1889 to 1899; and growth from 1900 to 1914. Family, business and social networks together with geographical and political factors secured the companyā€™s dominant position. The structural relationship with Merz & McLellan contributed to growth through acquisitions, joint ventures, and access to new markets
