The Conformal Sector of F-theory GUTs
D3-brane probes of exceptional Yukawa points in F-theory GUTs are natural
hidden sectors for particle phenomenology. We find that coupling the probe to
the MSSM yields a new class of N = 1 conformal fixed points with computable
infrared R-charges. Quite surprisingly, we find that the MSSM only weakly mixes
with the strongly coupled sector in the sense that the MSSM fields pick up
small exactly computable anomalous dimensions. Additionally, we find that
although the states of the probe sector transform as complete GUT multiplets,
their coupling to Standard Model fields leads to a calculable threshold
correction to the running of the visible sector gauge couplings which improves
precision unification. We also briefly consider scenarios in which SUSY is
broken in the hidden sector. This leads to a gauge mediated spectrum for the
gauginos and first two superpartner generations, with additional contributions
to the third generation superpartners and Higgs sector.Comment: v2: 51 pages, 2 figures, remark added, typos correcte
Yukawa hierarchies at the point of in F-theory
We analyse the structure of Yukawa couplings in local SU(5) F-theory models
with enhancement. In this setting the symmetry is broken down to
SU(5) by a 7-brane configuration described by T-branes, all the Yukawa
couplings are generated in the vicinity of a point and only one family of
quarks and leptons is massive at tree-level. The other two families obtain
their masses when non-perturbative effects are taken into account, being
hierarchically lighter than the third family. However, and contrary to previous
results, we find that this hierarchy of fermion masses is not always
appropriate to reproduce measured data. We find instead that different T-brane
configurations breaking to SU(5) give rise to distinct hierarchical
patterns for the holomorphic Yukawa couplings. Only some of these patterns
allow to fit the observed fermion masses with reasonable local model parameter
values, adding further constraints to the construction of F-theory GUTs. We
consider an model where such appropriate hierarchy is realised and
compute its physical Yukawas, showing that realistic charged fermions masses
can indeed be obtained in this case.Comment: 46 pages + appendices, 5 figures. v2, added references and typos

Wavefunctions and the Point of E8 in F-theory
In F-theory GUTs interactions between fields are typically localised at
points of enhanced symmetry in the internal dimensions implying that the
coefficient of the associated operator can be studied using a local
wavefunctions overlap calculation. Some F-theory SU(5) GUT theories may exhibit
a maximum symmetry enhancement at a point to E8, and in this case all the
operators of the theory can be associated to the same point. We take initial
steps towards the study of operators in such theories. We calculate
wavefunctions and their overlaps around a general point of enhancement and
establish constraints on the local form of the fluxes. We then apply the
general results to a simple model at a point of E8 enhancement and calculate
some example operators such as Yukawa couplings and dimension-five couplings
that can lead to proton decay.Comment: 46 page
F-Theory GUT Vacua on Compact Calabi-Yau Fourfolds
We present compact three-generation F-theory GUT models meeting in particular
the constraints of D3-tadpole cancellation and D-term supersymmetry. To this
end we explicitly construct elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fourfolds as
complete intersections in a toric ambient space. Toric methods enable us to
control the singular geometry of the SU(5) GUT model. The GUT brane wraps a
non-generic del Pezzo surface admitting GUT symmetry breaking via hypercharge
flux. It is contractible to a curve and we demonstrate the existence of a
consistent decoupling limit. We compute the Euler characteristic of the
singular Calabi-Yau fourfold to show that our three-generation flux solutions
obtained via the spectral cover construction are consistent with D3-tadpole
cancellation.Comment: 22+12 pages; v2: minor clarifications on decoupling limi
Rational F-Theory GUTs without exotics
We construct F-theory GUT models without exotic matter, leading to the MSSM
matter spectrum with potential singlet extensions. The interplay of engineering
explicit geometric setups, absence of four-dimensional anomalies, and realistic
phenomenology of the couplings places severe constraints on the allowed local
models in a given geometry. In constructions based on the spectral cover we
find no model satisfying all these requirements. We then provide a survey of
models with additional U(1) symmetries arising from rational sections of the
elliptic fibration in toric constructions and obtain phenomenologically
appealing models based on SU(5) tops. Furthermore we perform a bottom-up
exploration beyond the toric section constructions discussed in the literature
so far and identify benchmark models passing all our criteria, which can serve
as a guideline for future geometric engineering.Comment: 27 Pages, 1 Figur
Massive Abelian Gauge Symmetries and Fluxes in F-theory
F-theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau fourfold naturally describes
non-Abelian gauge symmetries through the singularity structure of the elliptic
fibration. In contrast Abelian symmetries are more difficult to study because
of their inherently global nature. We argue that in general F-theory
compactifications there are massive Abelian symmetries, such as the uplift of
the Abelian part of the U(N) gauge group on D7-branes, that arise from
non-Kahler resolutions of the dual M-theory setup. The four-dimensional
F-theory vacuum with vanishing expectation values for the gauge fields
corresponds to the Calabi-Yau limit. We propose that fluxes that are turned on
along these U(1)s are uplifted to non-harmonic four-form fluxes. We derive the
effective four-dimensional gauged supergravity resulting from F-theory
compactifications in the presence of the Abelian gauge factors including the
effects of possible fluxes on the gauging, tadpoles and matter spectrum.Comment: 49 page
Growth Parameter Components of Adaptive Specificity during Experimental Evolution of the UVR-Inducible Mutator Pseudomonas cichorii 302959
BACKGROUND: Mutagenic DNA repair (MDR) transiently increases mutation rate through the activation of low-fidelity repair polymerases in response to specific, DNA-damaging environmental stress conditions such as ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure. These repair polymerases also confer UVR tolerance, intimately linking mutability and survival in bacteria that colone habitats subject to regular UVR exposure. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here, we investigate adaptive specificity in experimental lineages of the highly UVR-mutable epiphytic plant pathogen Pseudomonas cichorii 302959. Relative fitness measurements of isolates and population samples from replicate lineages indicated that adaptive improvements emerged early in all lineages of our evolution experiment and specific increases in relative fitness correlated with distinct improvements in doubling and lag times. Adaptive improvements gained under UVR and non-UVR conditions were acquired preferentially, and differentially contributed to relative fitness under varied growth conditions. CONCLUSIONS: These results support our earlier observations that MDR activation may contribute to gains in relative fitness without impeding normal patterns of adaptive specificity in P. cichorii 302959
Flux and Instanton Effects in Local F-theory Models and Hierarchical Fermion Masses
We study the deformation induced by fluxes and instanton effects on Yukawa
couplings involving 7-brane intersections in local F-theory constructions. In
the absence of non-perturbative effects, holomorphic Yukawa couplings do not
depend on open string fluxes. On the other hand instanton effects (or gaugino
condensation on distant 7-branes) do induce corrections to the Yukawas. The
leading order effect may also be captured by the presence of closed string
(1,2) IASD fluxes, which give rise to a non-commutative structure. We check
that even in the presence of these non-perturbative effects the holomorphic
Yukawas remain independent of magnetic fluxes. Although fermion mass
hierarchies may be obtained from these non-perturbative effects, they would
give identical Yukawa couplings for D-quark and Lepton masses in SU(5) F-theory
GUT's, in contradiction with experiment. We point out that this problem may be
solved by appropriately normalizing the wavefunctions. We show in a simple toy
model how the presence of hypercharge flux may then be responsible for the
difference between D-quarks and Lepton masses in local SU(5) GUT's.Comment: 84 pages, 1 figure. v2: minor corrections and references adde
The Intermediate Scale MSSM, the Higgs Mass and F-theory Unification
Even if SUSY is not present at the Electro-Weak scale, string theory suggests
its presence at some scale M_{SS} below the string scale M_s to guarantee the
absence of tachyons. We explore the possible value of M_{SS} consistent with
gauge coupling unification and known sources of SUSY breaking in string theory.
Within F-theory SU(5) unification these two requirements fix M_{SS} ~ 5 x
10^{10} GeV at an intermediate scale and a unification scale M_c ~ 3 x 10^{14}
GeV. As a direct consequence one also predicts the vanishing of the quartic
Higgs SM self-coupling at M_{SS} ~10^{11} GeV. This is tantalizingly consistent
with recent LHC hints of a Higgs mass in the region 124-126 GeV. With such a
low unification scale M_c ~ 3 x 10^{14} GeV one may worry about too fast proton
decay via dimension 6 operators. However in the F-theory GUT context SU(5) is
broken to the SM via hypercharge flux. We show that this hypercharge flux
deforms the SM fermion wave functions leading to a suppression, avoiding in
this way the strong experimental proton decay constraints. In these
constructions there is generically an axion with a scale of size f_a ~
M_c/(4\pi)^2 ~ 10^{12} GeV which could solve the strong CP problem and provide
for the observed dark matter. The prize to pay for these attractive features is
to assume that the hierarchy problem is solved due to anthropic selection in a
string landscape.Comment: 48 pages, 8 figures. v3: further minor correction
Unification and Phenomenology of F-Theory GUTs with U(1)_PQ
We undertake a phenomenological study of SU(5) F-theory GUT models with an
additional U(1)_{PQ} symmetry. In such models, breaking SU(5) with hypercharge
flux leads to the presence of non-GUT multiplets in the spectrum. We study the
effect these have on the unification of gauge couplings, including two-loop
running as well as low- and high-scale threshold corrections. We use the
requirement of unification to constrain the size of thresholds from KK modes of
SU(5) gauge and matter fields. Assuming the non-GUT multiplets play the role of
messengers of gauge mediation leads to controlled non-universalities in the
sparticle spectrum while maintaining grand unification, and we study the LHC
phenomenology of this scenario. We find that the MSSM spectrum may become
compressed or stretched out {by up to a factor of three} depending on the
distribution of hypercharge flux. We present a set of benchmark points whose
production cross-sections and decays we investigate, and argue that precision
kinematic edge measurements will allow the LHC to distinguish between our model
and mGMSB.Comment: 46 pages, 15 figure
