    Wind-Tunnel Investigation of the Low-Speed Characteristics of a 1/8-Scale Model of the Republic XP-91 Airplane with a Vee and a Conventional Tail. Addendum - Characteristics with a Revised Conventional Tail and Drooped Wing Tips

    Additional wind-tunnel tests were made of a 1/8-scale model of the Republic XP-91 airplane to determine its characteristics with various modifications. The modifications included a revised conventional tail, revised rocket arrangement, drooped wing tips, and revised landing gear and doors. Tests were also made to determine the effectiveness of the control surfaces of the model with the conventional tail and the effect of changing wing incidence and tail length. The revised rocket arrangement provided a considerable increase in the static directional stability contributed by the vee tail at small angles of yaw. The conventional tail provided a greater static directional stability than the vee tail without increasing the rolling moment due to sideslip. The rolling moment die to sideslip was considerable reduced by either drooped wing tips or open main landing-gear doors. The reduction in rolling moment due to sideslip resulting from the drooped tips was less with the landing-gear doors open than with the doors closed. A change in wing incidence from 0 degrees to 6 degrees reduced the elevator angle required for balance by approximately 6 degrees

    Tests were made of a large-scale tilt-wing deflected-slipstream VTOL airplane with blowing-type BLC trailing-edge flaps. The model was tested with flap deflections of 0 deg. without BLC, 50 deg. with and without BLC, and 80 deg. with BLC for wing-tilt angles of 0, 30, and 50 deg. Included are results of tests of the model equipped with a leading-edge flap and the results of tests of the model in the presence of a ground plane

    STOL Characteristics of a Propeller-Driven, Aspect-Ratio-10, Straight-Wing Airplane with Boundary-Layer Control Flaps, as Estimated from Large-Scale Wind-Tunnel Tests

    A study is presented of the improvements in take-off and landing distances possible with a conventional propeller-driven transport-type airplane when the available lift is increased by propeller slipstream effects and by very effective trailing-edge flaps and ailerons. This study is based on wind-tunnel tests of a 45-foot span, powered model, with BLC on the trailing-edge flaps and controls. The data were applied to an assumed airplane with four propellers and a wing loading of 50 pounds per square foot. Also included is an examination of the stability and control problems that may result in the landing and take-off speed range of such a vehicle. The results indicated that the landing and take-off distances could be more than halved by the use of highly effective flaps in combination with large amounts of engine power to augment lift (STOL). At the lowest speeds considered (about 50 knots), adequate longitudinal stability was obtained but the lateral and directional stability were unsatisfactory. At these low speeds, the conventional aerodynamic control surfaces may not be able to cope with the forces and moments produced by symmetric, as well as asymmetric, engine operation.     The XV-15 aircraft was tested in the Ames 40 by 80 Foot Wind Tunnel for preliminary evaluation of aerodynamic and aeroelastic characteristics prior to flight. The tests were undertaken to investigate the aircraft performance, stability, control and structural loads for flight modes from helicopter through transition and airplane mode up to the tunnel capability of 170 knots.
