    The Bush Administration’s Torture Policy: Outright Disregard for the Rule of Law and Human Rights

    September 11, 2001 was an infamous day in American history that shocked not only the U.S. but also the World; it generated turmoil and distress for the economy, security, citizen’s lives, and U.S. power. The Bush administration’s response was a “war on terror” which involved a complete manipulation and disregard for national and international laws and the essential authorization of torture at U.S. controlled foreign detention centers. These policies spread by moving down the “chain of command” and into the hands of guards and interrogators that abused, humiliated, and in some cases killed detainees in U.S. control. If anything, the torture response put America in graver danger as the country aided in tarnishing its reputation and legitimacy, in addition to creating further anti-American extremists. The larger implications behind the Bush administration’s torture policy include the undermining of constitutional law and executive power, as well as the false justifications and usage of “military necessity.” It is my contention that the American public needs to be informed that the Bush administration has undermined the law with their torture policy and that it did not provide actionable intelligence, but rather abused and killed individuals. Furthermore, because of these actions, America has been placed in a precarious situation that the whole nation is left to deal with. If the country is to learn anything, it is that violence is not the answer and more so that violence cannot be retaliated with greater violence or injustices

    The gray matter volume of the amygdala is correlated with the perception of melodic intervals: a voxel-based morphometry study

    Music is not simply a series of organized pitches, rhythms, and timbres, it is capable of evoking emotions. In the present study, voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was employed to explore the neural basis that may link music to emotion. To do this, we identified the neuroanatomical correlates of the ability to extract pitch interval size in a music segment (i.e., interval perception) in a large population of healthy young adults (N = 264). Behaviorally, we found that interval perception was correlated with daily emotional experiences, indicating the intrinsic link between music and emotion. Neurally, and as expected, we found that interval perception was positively correlated with the gray matter volume (GMV) of the bilateral temporal cortex. More important, a larger GMV of the bilateral amygdala was associated with better interval perception, suggesting that the amygdala, which is the neural substrate of emotional processing, is also involved in music processing. In sum, our study provides one of first neuroanatomical evidence on the association between the amygdala and music, which contributes to our understanding of exactly how music evokes emotional responses

    Membrane Fusion Mediated by Non-covalent Binding of Re-engineered Cholera Toxin Assemblies to Glycolipids

    Membrane fusion is essential for the transport of macromolecules and viruses across membranes. While glycan-binding proteins (lectins) often initiate cellular adhesion, subsequent fusion events require additional protein machinery. No mechanism for membrane fusion arising from simply a protein binding to membrane glycolipids has been described thus far. Herein, we report that a biotinylated protein derived from cholera toxin becomes a fusogenic lectin upon cross-linking with streptavidin. This novel reengineered protein brings about hemifusion and fusion of vesicles as demonstrated by mixing of fluorescently labeled lipids between vesicles as well as content mixing of liposomes filled with fluorescently labeled dextran. Exclusion of the complex at vesicle–vesicle interfaces could also be observed, indicating the formation of hemifusion diaphragms. Discovery of this fusogenic lectin complex demonstrates that new emergent properties can arise from simple changes in protein architecture and provides insights into new mechanisms of lipid-driven fusion
